SF: THE FAMILY STONE AT THE RRAZZ FEATURING ORIGINAL FOUNDING MEMBERS

SF: THE FAMILY STONE AT THE RRAZZ FEATURING ORIGINAL FOUNDING MEMBERS

RRAZZ ROOM at THE HOTEL NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-394-1189) will present Rock & Roll Hall of Fame funk/rock group, THE FAMILY STONE from Thursday through Sunday, December 6th through 9th (showtimes vary so see website). The engagement features original founding members and R&B Pioneer Award Winners, Jerry Martini, Cynthia Robinson and Greg Errico. The show will also feature Alex Davis and Trina Johnson on vocals, Nate Wingfield on guitar and musical director Blaise Sison on bass. The first inter-racial / inter-gender band in Rock & Roll history bring you the hits of The Family Stone such as "I Want to Take You Higher," "Everyday People," "Dance To The Music," "Hot Fun In The Summertime," "Family Affair" and "Sing a Simple Song." Back in 1967, when the interracial, mixed-gender combo burst onto the scene with their debut album, the burgeoning rock & roll subculture was hungry for fresh kicks and different sounds. But no one was quite prepared for the magical, multi-faceted musical mix Sly and company served up. Their music was an inspired blend of rock, soul, pop, jazz, and an emerging genre soon to be dubbed funk. It packed a powerful, joyous wallop, delivering all the things one hoped to find in music: The thrill of the new, the excitement of the unexpected, a galvanizing groove, and lyrics that actually said something. The Family Stone continues giving you the musical experience that has brought them in front of over half a million people through Europe and the US; spreading the roots of funk and Rock & Roll. There is a $40-$45 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

S.F.: RUSS LORENSON CELEBRATES SEVEN YEARS OF "CHRISTMAS IN SAN FRANCISCO"

S.F.: RUSS LORENSON CELEBRATES SEVEN YEARS OF "CHRISTMAS IN SAN FRANCISCO"

For the seventh year, Russ Lorenson comes home for the holidays with his annual show, "Christmas in San Francisco with Russ Lorenson & Friends," for one performance only at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, December 5th at 8:00 pm at RRAZZ ROOM at THE HOTEL NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-394-1189). The guest artist for this year's show is Broadway and cabaret star Karen Mason. With songs by such great composers and lyricists as Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, and Frank Loesser, there's something for everyone in this swinging evening of jingle jazz. Heard each year on "The Bay Area's Official Christmas Station - 96.5 KOIT-FM" with his recording of "Christmas in San Francisco," Russ Lorenson has established a reputation as one of the San Francisco Bay Area's leading interpreters of jazz standards, with a sound and approach that place him at the intersection of Broadway, jazz, and pop - the very essence of the Great American Songbook. Karen Mason has starred on Broadway, Off-Broadway, television, and recording and "has few peers when it comes to ripping the roof off with her amazing voice that knows no bounds!" according to TheatreScene.net. Karen is a ten -time MAC Award winner and has won the MAC Award for Major Female Vocalist of the Year for six consecutive years. L.A.: CHAMBERS, HERBERT, & ELLIS AT THE GARDENIA

L.A.: CHAMBERS, HERBERT, & ELLIS AT THE GARDENIA

Chambers, Herbert, & Ellis will perform at THE GARDENIA(7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on Wednesday, December 5th at 9:00 pm. Pierre Chambers, Lisa Herbert, and Mitch Ellis have struck a mother lode of unique and exhilarating musical material through exhuming, creatively re-working, and re-inventing works of legendary jazz artists through the nearly lost art of "vocalese" - assigning what would generally be considered instrumental riffs to the human voice. Their talents spring directly from their dads: bass player Paul Chambers played on and off with Miles Davis and John Coltrane in the '50s; bassist Mort Herbert toured with the Louis Armstrong All-Stars in the '50s and '60s; and guitarist Herb Ellis played with the Oscar Peterson trio for many years and established a very successful solo career spanning decades. Creating an impact recalling The Manhattan Transfer, the group's repertoire pays homage to the vocal treatments of Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, many of which were themselves based on Ellington or Basie big band arrangements, and features expanded treatments of original vocalese and jazz harmonies in musical arrangements played, written, or made famous by, their own fathers. Ensconced at The Gardenia the first Wednesday of every month, with each show spanking new, they are becoming increasingly popular as word of mouth spreads ... and the "buzz" surrounding them is well-deserved. Piano support for this month's Halloween special is supplied by Richard Eames, with Tim Emmons on bass. Call for cover/minimum information.

MOVE IT OR LOSE IT! SAVE THE BUTTERFLY CLUB

Iconic Melbourne arts institution THE BUTTERFLY CLUB (204 Bank Street, South Melbourne, VIC, AUS - 03 96902000 - ) called for community help over the weekend for a necessary relocation from South Melbourne to a new home at 256 Collins Street in the Melbourne city centre in February 2013. Director Mr Simone Pulga said the move was due to the unbearable costs of operating in the current premises. "If we increased the cost of drinks to match the rise in rent, we'd have to charge $12.50 for a stubby. We must move The Butterfly Club to a better location ... or close it. Paradoxically, inner-city Melbourne has provided us with an affordable, long-term opportunity to create a new theatre space in an exciting unused building. The show room will be larger with more comfortable seating but the venue will remain just as intimate and quirky with the much-loved decor and regular shows moving with the venue," he said. A community fundraising campaign was launched using popular crowd-funding website Pozible.com. The campaign is embracing a cabaret twist on the 'Buy A Brick' phenomena, aptly coined: 'Cash For Kitsch'. Supporters will be able to adopt a piece of The Butterfly Club history and ensure it has a home at the new venue. The artist community including Tim Minchin, Eddie Perfect, Sammy J & Randy, Spanky (UK), Marieke Hardy, Dan Ilik, Tripod and many, many more have rallied behind the campaign, donating exclusive rewards and experiences. $130,000 is needed for the relocation, and it is hoped at least $20,000 of this can be raised via the crowd-funding campaign, which closes on January 16, 2013. CLICK HERE for more information/
