NYC: DIZZY GILLESPIE ALL STAR BIG BAND AT THE BLUE NOTE

History has produced its share of great artists and great people - John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration. As a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces, and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. For Dizzy Gillespie, playing in a small combo was never enough. His artistry compelled him to seek and to create larger ensembles because as a composer and arranger, a big band was the ultimate vehicle for self-expression. Given that the majority of his career took place after 1950 when the big band era was over, it's especially notable that Dizzy Gillespie continued to create brilliant music using the grand-scale formats of jazz big band and orchestra right up to the end of his life in 1993. The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and Alumni All-Star group (small group) is the direct descendant of these ventures, and happily, the tradition lives on, nurtured by Gillespie alumni and executive director, producer, and bassist John Lee. Jerry Gretzinger is back with a vengeance, starring on Washington County's MAINSTAGE AT FORT SALEM THEATER (11 East Broadway, Salem, NY - 518-854-9200) as a once successful singer whose popularity is waning, in the new musical, Women in My Life, running for two weekends, Fridays through Sundays, July 11th through 20th slightly deviating from the Fort's normal schedule, with 8:00 pm shows on July 11th, 12th, and 18th, and matinees at 2:00 pm on July 13th, 19th and 20th. As Jerry Jerome, Gretzinger balances his career with his ex-wife, former girl friend, and the women with whom he lives but fails to commit. Tough enough he has to deal with them in his personal life, he employs them all as his backup group, which means he also deals with them dealing with one another. As the ex, Susan Cicarelli-Caputo, a fixture at the former NYSTI and Capital Rep, brings her years of theater experience to play against type as a sometimes bitter woman struggling with her own inability to separate from the man she has divorced. The former girl friend, played by Heather-Liz Copps, who sang opposite Gretzinger last year in the Not-So-Common Players' Music Man, observes from a distance as Jerry Jerome gives his ego needed strokes by hitting on the new girl in the backup group, played by Gretzinger's real-life fiancee, Erin Weaver. Women in My Life, the creation of Fort Salem's artistic director, Jay Kerr, contains serious autobiographical overtones. Call for cover/minimum information.

NYC: DIZZY GILLESPIE ALL STAR BIG BAND AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band will perform atTHE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, July 8th through 13th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. There is a $20-$30 cover.
