ANNA'S JAZZ ISLAND CLOSES SUDDENLY - NEW BUILDING OWNER
EMAIL RECEIVED OVERNIGHT FROM ANNA DE LEON
Friends,
I am sending this out again because some folks have told me they didn’t receive it today. Please excuse any duplication.
I am writing to tell you that Anna’s Jazz Island at 2120 Allston Way is now closed. We hope to move soon to a new location. I am sorry that I could not write this sooner. The agreement with my new landlord to buy out my lease was only completed a few days ago and I needed a few days to organize my thoughts...
THANK YOU.
Thank you to you, the musicians, who have shared your gifts with us. You have been generous, wildly creative, fun, smart, good to all of us and to each other. There is nobody more wonderful than you, our local musical treasures. You poets too! Everyone, support them. Go hear them, yes, even on rainy nights. Musicians need us. And we need musicians too!
Thank you to you, the wonderful staff here. We have been friends and family. I hear over and over what I already know - you are wonderful, fun, smart, good hearted and musical. There would be no Island without you.
Thank you to you folks who have come in, who have enjoyed and supported the music. I have tried to make a place where jazz is comfortable, where there is no green room, no proscenium, no far away stage, no anonymous staff. I wanted a place where the musicians and those who come by to enjoy the music share an experience. So you are not just audience, but all part of the coming together of the music community. Thank you for being part of that.
I have been blessed by having my name on the door in Berkeley these past ten years, first on University Avenue and now on Allston Way - and even before that, on Shattuck Avenue in North Oakland! I have tried my best to do my part in bringing jazz to our community. Thousands of musicians have shared their gifts here on this Island and I am blessed to be part of that.
WHAT HAPPENED HERE?
This change has all been very sudden, just a few weeks in the making...
After happily being on University Avenue for more than five years, we moved to Allston Way, a venue twice as large with a stage big enough for a grand piano. And such wonderful acoustics! The Use Permit for the two bottom floors specifies an Arts Center and requires only cultural use. A theater was promised next door. It was to be a thrilling move for jazz and jazz lovers. I designed the Island and paid for the build out of the space.
Unfortunately, we encountered a string of broken promises on the part of the developer, and a pro-development majority on the city council, which refused to enforce the commitment to the arts. The developer rented out the theater next door to private parties. Some of you have personally experienced these rowdy and disruptive events, with armed guards at the entrance, with hundreds of young adults in the street, where the block was entirely blocked off by police cars and the “parties” closed by dozens of police officers, and where jazz lovers could not get in or out of the club. Many evenings, it has been profoundly difficult for us to present music. (For more details, Google “Gaia Building Party Police” for news articles.) For some time now, we have considered other locations.
Which leads to the present moment. The new owner wished to terminate our lease and made an offer we couldn’t refuse. We are now looking for a new space and a new partner, somebody who loves jazz, to participate in opening a new venue. We have palm trees, ten years of goodwill in the jazz community, a huge e-mail list, and a loyal audience looking for a new musical home. We know the musicians are ready to play! We shall see what life brings...
GOODBYE FOR NOW...
Have joyful new year full of music...

2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH UPDATE
---------------
Tom Stajmiger, who is producing the 2010 MARCH IS CABARET MONTH GALA on behalf of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE at the THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - ) on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm is currently contacting a number of performers from the world of cabaret and Broadway to perform at the show, and names will be announced as arrangements are made. As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice.
Last week it was announced that long-time cabaret performer Richard Skipper will be the MC of this year's event. The Gala is the kick-off event of the 3rd Annual MARCH IS CABARET MONTH celebration. Tickets will go on sale shortly. Meantime, sponsors are being sought to defray expenses of the world-wide promotion offers and the gala. (see related item below)
We're still looking for sponsors for MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion and gala - in $100 units. As we did with our November CD show, we want to cover all our expenses in advance so that we can concentrate our efforts completely on promotion of the entire international promotion program rather than fund raising or trying to sell every last ticket to the gala at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN on March 2nd. We currently have three sponsors - the more sponsors, the bigger the promotion can be!

CATARINA'S OWNER TO RETIRE - CLUB TO CLOSE
Legendary (truly deserved appellation in this case) piano bar/open mic entertainer Jerry Scott announced Sunday that his 2-year run at CATERINA'S (316 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-355-5360) will come to a close this Saturday, January 16th (9-12 pm), since the owner is retiring and closing the club after 38 years. Jerry is there on Friday & Saturday, and urges everyone who wants to attend to make a reservation - he predicts the place will be packed even more than usual. Jerry is already making plans for his next piano bar home and might even make an announcement of same this week at the restaurant.
JOHN HOGLUND TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY THE OLD FASHIONED WAY - A PARTY
Just a quick note: cabaret reviewer/writer/editor, the legendary* John Hoglund, celebrates his 38th birthday yet again on Friday, January 15th. (* he makes me say that) John will be holding his annual party/revelry (I was tempted to say orgy but checked my dictionary and figured it might result in a lawsuit) at CATERINA'S (316 East 53rd Street, NYC - 212-355-5360) starting around 8:00 pm. RESERVATIONS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY - see next item for the reason why.
CABARET AUDIENCE MEMBER TIP
CABARET AUDIENCE MEMBER TIP: Don't always believe them when you try to make a reservation for a show, and they tell you the show is SOLD OUT. First ask if your name can be added to the waiting list - it will be recorded and you should be notified if there are cancellations. I say "should be" because not all clubs follow through. Call the day of the show and double check. But, in addition, unless you have made other plans for the same evening, and if you have the time to be slightly inconvenienced, and if this is a show you particularly want to see, show up at the club a half hour early, and personally add your name to the room host's list as "standby & present." Nearly every so-called "SOLD OUT SHOW" I've been to ends up with 3 or more folks who made reservations who don't arrive - or at least don't arrive by the scheduled showtime. Those seats become available immediately at showtime and "waiting listees" are seated according to the time they signed in with the host. Even if the folks who made reservations arrive late, they will have forfeited their seats if there is no more available. Just another reason to 1) Make a Reservation and 2) show up for the show at least 15 minutes before showtime.
