"HERE & THERE" COMMENTS & COMMENTARY FROM THURSDAY AUGUST 5 NEWSLETTER

"HERE & THERE"

I don't have a review or two to pass along this week - for various reason, the main one being conservation of funds for some rather large expenditures we needed to make at the end of July (including the rent, of course). Instead, as promised in Monday's issue, I am including a special "report" that was published in the MEMBERS ONLY issue of Saturday, July 31st. It was sent out to the 400 folks who were new and renewed 2010-2011 and non-renewed 2009-2010 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. The article was on the subject of some clubs that appear to be letting their "brand" deteriorate by lowering their standards regarding performers presented. We repeat it in this regular issue, with a few modifications.

At one time, at least here in NYC (with about a dozen clubs offering cabaret shows from 5 to 7 nights a week), there were two distinct tiers of cabaret rooms. Even the various award events recognized this, offering special award categories with the "major" label, to differentiate between those clubs that offered "stars" over against the regular clubs.

"Major" clubs usually paid their performers a contracted weekly sum, charged a much higher cover/minimum and performances were 5 or more times a week, and from one to four weeks in length (sometimes even longer). These clubs promoted their "brand" by advertising in the major publications, employing press agents, sending out special mailings to their regular customers, and offering exclusivity (performers were limited as to what other appearances they could make in NYC for a certain period before and after their booking).

The regular rooms usually offered their spaces on a nightly rental basis, with the performer handling costs of publicity, and in turn receiving most or all of the cover charge. This was where performers made their start, made their debut, and established their own personal brand. (we'll be discussing personal branding in Saturday's MEMBERS ONLY NEWSLETTER).

More recently, a middle tier formed - with some of the benefits of the "premium rooms" (ads in major publications, press agent on staff, higher cover/minimums) while, in place of a paid fee, giving the performer a major percentage of the cover.

Sadly (or maybe not), things have now become muddled, probably because of the wilting economy (which is predicted to continue well into 2011). I can think of only one room in NYC right now that I still consider a "major" room. Just about every other space is available for anyone with "a dollar and a dream." Some venues which used to "look down their noses" at the "non-major" rooms for booking acts under the policy that "everyone should have the chance to perform" have now adopted pretty much the same policy. In the process, they have tampered (and tarnished) their brand. Even the newer "middle tier" clubs seem to have lowered their standards lately, and at the same time cutting back their promotion services.

At one time, a booking in certain "major" rooms in NYC was a goal that performers perfected their craft to achieve. Today you can no longer be certain that you will find top quality shows consistently in the top venues in town. As with so many other things in modern life, quality in cabaret (at least here in NYC) has suffered. And once a brand has been tarnished, it becomes very difficult to bring back its former lustre. The bigger question is: once performers no longer have a "next level" to strive for, will they stagnate in their craft?

"And then there were none." Folks in the NYC area who decry the disappearance of radio shows promoting "our kind of music" have another chance to do something about it this Sunday when one of the last shows promoting big-band jazz, swing, standards, showtunes, and contemporary cabaret, plus regular interviews with personalities from these worlds, EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN holds another FUND RAISING SPECIAL. EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN is heard on the radio over WBAI 99.5 FM and worldwide on the Internet at http://www.wbai.org/ from 9:00 to 11:00 pm on Sundays, and is hosted by David Kenney. This Sunday the show starts an hour earlier, and I urge you to call 212-209-2950 with your pledge during this broadcast.

Just like so many others these days, there are moments I get very discouraged. Its usually those times when I feel I've "hit the wall" and yet somehow, at those times something seems to happen that immediately brings me back to reality. It happened about a week ago. As most of you know, in times of really hot (and in winter, really cold) weather, my pal Daniel stops at my mail box on Ninth Avenue in midtown to retrieve my mail and bring it to the Lower East Side (Loisaida) for me. Last week he texted me "No checks" - a short phrase that needs no explanation. But next text was "But a surprise that will make you happy". This remained a mystery until he arrived about 45 minutes later. It was a large, flat envelope. Inside was a piece of sheet music from songwriter Karen Benedetto and her manager/partner Jean Barlow. The song was "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" (C.D. Martin & C.H. Gabriel). Regular CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE readers recognize that phrase, I'm sure, since it appears at the bottom of every issue of the newsletter (and at the bottom of every e-mail I send out). Talk about a wake-up. Thanks, Jean & Karen, for your thoughtfulness!

Daniel just texted me something else as we go to press. He wanted to let me know that today is Independence Day for the province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador. Daniel was born in Columbia, but when he was a small boy his family was forced to flee to Ecuador, and was welcomed with open arms by the people of this small, coastal state. So, congratulations Esmeraldas. I just looked you up in Wikipedia, and you're quite a town!

NEWS FROM AUS: EMMA DEAN IS RECIPIENT OF THE 'UNDER OUR WING AWARD'

AUS: EMMA DEAN IS RECIPIENT OF THE 'UNDER OUR WING AWARD'

Congratulations to Australian cabaret artist Emma Dean, who was announced this week as the winner of the prestigious annual 'Under Our Wing Award', Australia's top award given to emerging cabaret performers. Emma is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music and performances delve into the magical world where live music meets theatre. Emma's theatrical fascination led her to the decadent world of cabaret in early 2009. She has had two number one hits on the TripleJ Unearthed charts so far this year, with her singles 'Thunder' and 'Thieving Hearts' reaching the top spots in May.

She is well known for her diverse collaborations, ranging from performing as a guest artist for The Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer; world renowned Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre Company; co-writer and co-lead in the musical Downside Up (2009); lead role in the short film Solitaire (2007); lead acting and singing role in the NIDA production of Medea, for which she also wrote several songs; and performances with Kate Miller-Heidke, Angie Hart (Frente), Teddy Geiger and David Campbell.

Emma joins luminaries Tim Minchin (2003), Daniel Maloney (2004), Reuben Krum (2005), Sammy J (2006), Karin Muiznieks (2007), Joanne O'Callaghan and James Simpson (2008) and Tom Dickins (2009).

N.E. UPCOMING: "THE PROVINCETOWN JAZZ FEST" By Joni Rapp

N.E. UPCOMING: "THE PROVINCETOWN JAZZ FEST"
By Joni Rapp

The SIXTH annual "Provincetown Jazz Fest" will be held this year on Friday & Saturday, August 13th & 14th at the PROVINCETOWN HIGH SCHOOL (12 Winslow Street, Provincetown, MA), which is one block from Commercial Street, with dozens of bars & restaursants where dinner and drinks are always available before and after the shows. The town's largest parking lot is also conveniently located adjacent to the High School.

Bart Weisman, executive producer of the Provincetown Jazz Fest (who also organized and directed the highly successful "Provincetown Cabaret Festival" in April), has put together an extraordinary lineup of talented people for this event, which will "Celebrate" the Survival and Revival of New Orleans Jazz, as we near the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. A portion of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the New Orleans Musician's Clinic , which provides healthcare for uninsured Jazz musicians and Artists living and working in "the battered city which refuses to die".

According to an interview with Provincetown.com., Weisman said, "I play only on the Cape and bring the world's greats, like New Orleans (singer/ songwriter/ guitarist) Paul Sanchez here for the festival. People plan their vacations around this festival; creating a group that comes annually to be with us." This year should prove no different, as the Cape is continues as a haven for people escaping the heat of the cities, as well as looking for great musical venues.

The Festival opens Friday night at 8:00 pm with Pianist, Vocalist, Composer, Lyricist and Arranger Janice Friedman, who has been a 'regular" for over two decades on the New York Jazz scene. Having traveled extensively throughout Europe and Japan, she has also played Carnegie Hall and been hailed by the NY Times as, "explosive". She'll be backed by Chris Rathbun (Bass) and Bart Weisman (drums) as she takes the spotlight.

Then Janice will stick around on stage and perform with Rathbun, who has worked with some of the "Greats" such as Rosemary Clooney, Linda Hopkins, Patti Page, Al Martino and more, and Weisman, who is the leader of the only "Year Round" Jazz group on Cape Cod. Weisman was the 2009 Winner of the "Best Music on Cape Cod" Award from New England Cable TV and has played for heads of state as well as working with numerous celebrities....including the ones that headline many of the Jazz and Cabaret Fests on the Cape.

The trio will then be joined by jazz/blues Singer Dane Vannatter, winner of the 2000 New York Bistro Award as best male vocalist as well as the 2006 Bistro Award for Outstanding CD. Vannatter was a smash at the CABARET FEST, and has sung nationwide, including at most of the top clubs in NYC and Boston.

After a short intermission, the trio will return with internationally acclaimed Jazz Saxophonist, Flutist, Composer and Arranger Greg Abate, who was lead alto Saxophonist with the Ray Charles and Artie Shaw Orchestras (among other great bands and musicians). Anything can happen when a group like this gets together. After their initial performances, look for some duets between Friedman and Vannatter, as well as some jamming with Abate remaining in play! This writer sees a standing ovation for the evening.

The show on Saturday night, on August 14th at 8:00 pm will feature a "Tribute to New Orleans" (BIRTHPLACE OF JAZZ). The show's star will be Paul Sanchez (himself a New Orleans native who lost much of his written music in in Hurricane Katrina), on vocals and guitar singing many of his well known songs. He'll be accompanied by Steve Ahern on Trumpet. Sanchez has a new CD out: "Farewell to Storyville" just released by Threadhead Records.

Opening Saturday night's concert will be the Berklee Rising Stars featuring Clay Lyons on Sax and Matt Joseph on Trumpet. Extraordinary young musicians, the two are students at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and competed to win a spot in the Festival. They will be accompanied by Berklee faculty musicians" Suzanne Davis (Piano), John Lockwood (Bass) and Bob Kaufman on drums.
Tickets for ALL shows are $25.

More information can be found at http://www.provincetownjazzfestival.org/ or by contacting Bart Weisman at either 508-274-2513 or by Email at:bartweisman@bartweisman.com There will be a review, including photos, of the fest in a following article.

NOTE: After the Fest....Sunday, August 15th, the BART WEISMAN TRIO will be playing at the monthly "JAZZ JAM" at the ISLAND MERCHANT PUB (302 Main Street, Hyannis, MA - 508-771-1337 - ) from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Generally, whenever there is a "Fest" of any kind in P'town, the singers and musicians love to stop by on their way off the Cape and strut their stuff again at the Open Mic at the club. Even performers not in any of the shows (but with lots of talent) show up for these special Sundays...whose audience's are sometimes more performers than "civilians." The place is usually PACKED...so make a reservation or get there early!

"HERE & THERE" from CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE #100801 - Monday, August 2, 2010

"HERE & THERE"

Thanks to several renewals over the weekend, a crisis was averted (or at least postponed). In our MEMBERS ONLY issue, sent to all 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE, we included a plea for members who had not yet rejoined for the new membership year, to help us out with a financial emergency brought about by the conjunction of the monthly rent, along with several other "must be paid by Monday" debts (including my cell phone). I could cover most, but not all.
The CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE members came through, and this morning we were able to cover all the bills (the cell will renew tomorrow). And, at the same time, there had been no new banner ad income for several weeks (there are currently only 3 banners running. with one to expire this weekend).

All I can ask is that if you plan on joining CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for the new membership year, please help us avoid a similar crisis at the end of August by joining (or renewing) this week. Even a sustaining $5 membership will be appreciated - you can always upgrade to a higher level at any time and receive full credit towards the cost.

You've asked us to include listing of your show, and we did the best we could. You asked us to attend your show, and we did the best we could. You asked us to give more listings about shows in your area, and we did the best we could. Now we're asking you to join as a supporting member of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - and all we ask is that you do the best you can - even if it's just $5. Without enough funds, we can't continue to give our best to cover and promote the art and the artists of cabaret around the world. We want to do better -and with your help we can!

With the bunch of renewals over the weekend, our membership count is now 191 - we missed our goal of 200 by August 1st, but we're only 9 short. Please join and help us reach 200 - and 300 by September 1st, when, hopefully, folks will begin purchasing banner ads again as the cabaret season restarts for a new season.

If you haven't joined or renewed yet, you can join instantly via PayPal for whatever amount you wish! Just click here, fill it in and we'll set the right level:

Because of some complaints, we are adjusting the content of our Thursday WEEKEND EDITION of the newsletter to include more listings besides shows running ads. This issue covers all items for which we have received press releases up to Sunday, August 22nd. We will now include any new show press releases received between now and Wednesday for shows before August 23rd in the WEEKEND EDITION.

You might also note that we're only running one HERE & THERE section in this issue, below the listings section. The space above the listings will now be given over to TODAY'S TOP STORIES, NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF CABARET. and SPECIAL CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE NEWS sections. There's a method to our madness: we can prepare the top and listing sections of the newsletter in advance as items come in, and concentrate on the HERE & THERE section on the date of publication. This will mean a little less pressure on press days, possibly leading to fewer typos and more time to proofread.

In Saturday's MEMBERS ONLY issue we included some comments about a perceived "brand deterioration" on the part of some cabaret venues (at least here in NYC) which has received some comment. Since this article appeared in the MEMBERS ONLY issue, it was sent to about 400 readers. If space permits, we will include the article (with a few updates and corrections) in this week's Thursday issue - our WEEKEND EDITION, sent to all 2700+ subscribers.

In the listings today we tried to include all the appropriate cabaret items through August 22nd for which press releases were received (remember, fliers and website URLs are not press releases). A few club schedules for August have yet to be received, so we can't claim that all are included quite yet. Hopefully the remaining schedules will be received so that we can include any items missed in the Thursday issue.
I remind you that we try to include and give preference to press releases received directly from performers and publicists, rather than rely on club schedule releases or items posted on Yahoo or Google groups boards. We usually only use items from those other sources to fill in for dates for which we have no direct releases. If the issue is running long, we usually leave them out.

Is CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE writing about you on TWITTER? Each day we promote some of the best cabaret events around the world via TWITTER and also on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG . The items are taken from the home page of the website which also changes every day. But you won't know what we're saying about you if you don't follow us.

See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2010-2011. Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support. Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!
Look for more news on the website, on the blog (http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) and updates, picks & reminders on TWITTER ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ).

And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about but we've run out of space so the rest will have to wait until Thursday's issue.
Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!

Hugs & Stuff,

STU

SOMETHING GOOD CAN ARISE FROM AWFUL CIRCUMSTANCES

SOMETHING GOOD CAN ARISE FROM AWFUL CIRCUMSTANCES

It was about one year ago that composer, performer, arranger and teacher Earl Wentz entered the hospital for that first roller-coaster 35-day stay. For those of you who worked with or were taught by Earl, you know that he could make something wonderful out of even the humblest of things. In New York, Earl created the American Composer Series, an ongoing performance series in the cabaret format, paying tribute to the greatest composers of popular American music on the American scene, particularly those composers associated with Tin Pan Alley and the American Songbook. From 2000 to 2009, the series presented 15 original musical revues, many returning for multiple performances over several seasons.

Earl and his longtime partner William Watkins shared the belief that good things can arise from awful circumstances. To that end has evolved The Earl Wentz Projects, a recently-formed arts initiative to continue the work of Earl Wentz and to preserve his legacy. The Earl Wentz Projects will catalogue and prepare for performance and publication the musical works of Earl Wentz; assess the body of work to determine which compositions are most suited for commercial performance in a manner that will further support the work of the project; actively market the musical works of Earl Wentz; provide proper archival and storage facilities to assure that the works are not lost; support wherever possible the performance and preservation of these works and ensure that their artistic integrity is maintained.

You can see the progress on this program by visiting http://.www.earlwentz.com/and you can make a tax-deductible financial contribution towards the work athttps://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/contribute/donate/3473

Greg also served for several years as an active pro-member of theMAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets) Board of Directors as well one of the cabaret community's most active champions of the artform.
