NYC: DAVID BRENNER IN SPECIAL ENGAGEMENT AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Returning to New York for his first major engagement in nearly 20 years, the comedian, political pundit and author David Brenner plays an exclusive three-night engagement at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) pm on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, August 22nd, 23rd, and 25th, all shows at 7:00 pm. By choosing the intimate concert venue as the setting of his long-awaited New York homecoming, Brenner returns to familiar territory: the club is the former location of the Gotham Comedy Club, which, with Catch a Rising Star, Pips and The Improv, were main stages for Brenner early in his career. Of the four, only Gotham (a sister club of the Metropolitan Room, now located on 23rd Street) remains today. Brenner has been a mainstay in Las Vegas where he began appearing in 1971. His opinionated comedy and commentary about world and current events land him regularly on MSNBC, CNN and Fox News. Brenner is the author of five books whose titles are way too long to mention here. On Saturday, August 25th at 9:30 pm, Stix Bones hosts Jazz Night at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) with a spectacular performance that takes you on a musical journey from Swing to Smooth Jazz. The show showcases the musical prowess of Jazz Artist/Drummer Stix Bones. Hailing from the borough of Brooklyn, Stix received his Bachelors Degree in Jazz Performance from Purchase College, State University of New York. It was there he was given the name BONES because to his band mates he showed himself to be a Brother of Noble Excellence. Stix independently released his first full-length Smooth Jazz album entitled "Groove Like This". The album has graced the airwaves of more than 40 jazz radio stations in the US, Jazz internet and satellite stations across the globe. It has charted in the top 10 on the digital jazz charts and made it to the top 20 jazz charts in France. Stix Bones whose musical influences are a mix of Hip Hop and Jazz has built a respectable name amongst Jazz & Hip Hop artist and is credited as truly a Brother of Noble Excellence. As its final offering of the summer, MAINSTAGE AT FORT SALEM THEATER (11 East Broadway, Salem, NY - 518-854-9200) raises the curtain on Significant Others Friday, August 17th, and the show runs weekends through August 26th with performances Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 pm, with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 pm. The presentation consists of three original one-act musical comedies about marriage, partnership, conflict, separation and reconciliation, written by Al Budde and Jay Kerr, the Salem team that spawned Corn! Carmichael, with his wife Susan Burk, the dance director he met the first day of Ragtime rehearsals, operates Emerson House, a B&B in Vergennes. Raposa, with his wife Claudia Shell-Raposa, whom he met on Broadway on his first day of rehearsals for Cats, teaches dance and drama at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester. Rosie Spring plays Raposa's wife in the first musical, To Have and to Hold, and Kathleen Devine is Carmichael's stage spouse. Trained classically by Andy Anselmo, founder of New York's The Singer's Forum vocal academy, Caroline performs throughout the New York area and has appeared at Lincoln Center and Julliard, Madison Square Garden, New World Stages, and Feinstein's at the Loews Regency, among many others. She recently showcased at the Wanderlust Festival of Vermont and performed with Dave Matthews, Paul Simon, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and The Wailers. Under the management of Tommy Mottola and Chris Apostle, she began recording her original songs with producer Chris Toland at Sony and Avatar studios in New York as a student at The Professional Children's School. Norman Gimbel won an Oscar for "It Goes Like It Goes" from Norma Rae and is responsible for some of the most recognizable and best-loved lyrics of the last half-century. In a career that goes back to the early '50s, Mr. Gimbel, working with such composers as Charles Fox, Michel LeGrand, David Shire and Antonio Carlos Jobim, gave words to such standards as Meditation, Sway, So Nice, The Girl From Ipanema, I Will Wait For You, Watch What Happens, I Will Follow Him, Killing Me Softly With His Song, Bluesette, and Canadian Sunset, as well as the themes to Wonder Woman, Laverne & Shirley and Happy Days. In his previous shows, Jeff Macauley explored the rich world of early musical films in "Hollywood Party: Movie Songs 1928-1934," and paid tribute to the most popular female singer of the '40s and a beloved Hollywood icon in "MWAH! The Dinah Shore Show." Cornelius Bates is an artist for our times and an artist for all times. Born in Memphis, Tennessee and educated at Howard University in Washington, DC, Cornelius now calls New York City home. The Richie Beirach Quintet, featuring Randy Brecker (trumpet), George Mraz (bass), Billy Hart (drums), and Gregor Huebner (violin), will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) Tuesday through Saturday, August 21st through 25th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Richard "Richie" Beirach's career as a jazz pianist began when he studied both classical and jazz at the Berklee College of Music. In 1972 he joined a group led by legendary saxophonist Stan Getz and went on to collaborate with trumpeter Chet Baker and French saxophonist Henrik Frisk. Since the early 1970's Beirach has also maintained an evolving partnership with saxophonist Dave Liebman in the groups "Lookout Farm," "Quest," and as a duo. Several of his compositions, such as "Leaving" and "Elm," are fixtures in the jazz repertoire. Richie's style is influenced by pianists Art Tatum and Bill Evans, as well as his earlier classical music training, a blend that is perfectly complimented by his quintet, which appears annually at Birdland. The Broadway at Birdland concert series presents the return of William Blake in "Echoes of Etta," a musical tribute to Etta James, at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - ) on Monday, August 20th at 7:00 pm. Blake, along with music director Michael Thomas Murray at the keys, Oscar Bautista on guitar, Steve Kelly on drums, Mike Preen on bass, Matthew Polashek on sax, and The Peaches (Ashley Betton, Shira Elias, and Stephany Mora) on backup, will return to once again celebrate the musical legacy of Etta James in "Echoes of Etta." From her first #1 hit "The Wallflower (Roll With Me, Henry)" to her quintessential "At Last," this concert gives a glimpse into the extraordinary career of an amazing artist. Blake is a native of Dallas and has been performing professionally since the age of 19. In 2004, William released his first studio album, DayDreamer. Shortly after the release, William auditioned for the fourth season of American Idol and went on to compete in Hollywood. In early 2007, he made the move to New York City to continue his musical career and has since performed at such notable NYC venues as Don't Tell Mama, Uncle Charlie's, The Metropolitan Room, Feinstein's at the Regency, and Birdland Jazz Club. In 2010, William was honored to receive an invitation to sing at Carnegie Hall in "Standard Time with Michael Feinstein." He also shared the stage with Liza Minnelli, Chita Rivera, Lucie Arnaz, and many others in "The Best of Jim Caruso's Cast Party" at Town Hall last February. In May 2011, he enjoyed the release of his first live album, Live From New York City (2012 MAC Award Nominee with Cavern Records), which was recorded at Birdland in September 2010 (now available on iTunes). This musical tribute covers Burton Lane's career as a composer beginning with his success at M-G-M as a motion picture songwriter of over thirty films leading up to his great triumph on Broadway with Finian's Rainbow and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever. The musical selections included in this show are songs written by Burton Lane with celebrated lyricists as Ira Gershwin, Frank Loesser, Harold Adamson, Ralph Freed, and of course, Alan Jay Lerner and E.Y. L.A.: DOUG GRAHAM IN "PERFECTLY IMPERFECT"

Doug Graham will perform at THE ARTHUR NEWMAN THEATRE at the JOSLYN CENTER THEATRE (73-750 Catalina Way, Palm Desert, CA - TKTS: 760-325-2731 - ) on Sunday, August 19th at 2:00 pm, Doug has done a lot of performing since moving to the desert five years ago but it pales by his credits as a Broadway 'gypsy' which is a long list indeed. There's CATS, Chicago, Phantom Of The Opera, A Chorus Line, Dancin', 5,6,7,8 Dance, Woman Of The Year, Dreamgirls, Damn Yankees, Will Rogers Follies, and 7 Brides For 7 Brothers, and more. Locally he continues to sing and dance and recently recreated his Rum Tug Tugger role in CATS for Palm Canyon Theater. As a choreographer, Doug is a 2012 Desert Theater League nominee for both his work on Broadway Tonight and Hooray For Hollywood for Cabaret Theater West. For this new one-man show, "Perfectly Imperfect", Doug has compiled a roster of song selections from Broadway, The Great American Songbook, and Popular music that he feels describe himself, but most likely the audience will see a little of themselves in more than a few. Musical director Joel Baker will accompany Doug on piano for the show and it is presented as part of the Les Michaels Sundays In Summer Cabaret Concert Series. Tickets are $10.
