LONDON CABARET TONIGHT: SALENA JONES AT THE YAMAHA MUSIC ROOM
London jazz icon Salena Jones will perform at THE YAMAHA MUSIC ROOM AT THE BULL`S HEAD (373 Lonsdale Road, Barnes, London SW13 - 020 8876 5241) on Saturday, May 11th at 8:30 pm. Salena will sing with her quintet, including the new addition of Hugh Wilkinson playing percussion, to her regular members: Will Bartlett, Matt Ridley, Patrick Davey and Richard Shepherd.Born Joan Shaw in Newport News, Virginia, she is a direct descendant of Crazy Horse, the Indian Sioux warrior. Frustrated by the racism in her home country, Joan moved to England in 1965 and changed her name to Salena Jones. CBS Records signed her, and she performed throughout Europe in major venues and TV shows. In 1967 Salena was booked for two weeks at Ronnie Scott's in London. The audience reaction was so strong that it led to an extended run of seven weeks - still a record for this famous jazz club. Over the last five decades, Salena has continued to work from her base in the UK, and has toured throughout Europe, Africa, America and Asia. She is a well loved artiste in Japan where she has toured on a regular basis since 1978. Call for cover/minimum information.

THIS AFTERNOON IN NYC: IMPRESARIO NOW! AT THE BEECHMAN
Impresario Now! 90% Theater, 90% Musicale, Very Mozart Most of the Time will be presented at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) on Saturdays, May 11th & 18th at 3:00 pm. The score is a very "now" version of Mozart's original 1786 comic songspiel. The classic four tunes are sing in really good English, and in this unique version, Mozart's rarely seen non-singing characters morph into a troupe of singers vying for roles by auditioning with a selection of Mozart's greatest hits. Dueling sopranos, battling baritones, a libidinous backer and one very broke producer. The same old story, brand new. You'll meet, and learn to love and loathe, Vinnie Birdwhistle, Heartbroken Tenor; sopranos Isolde Goldentrill and Swanhilda Silverspiel - one on the way up, one on the way out; Drusilla Kronensprech, a Mezzo with a Method, as well as Donaldo Largesse Angelgelt, Swifty Frank, and his Faithless Companion Buddenbrooks Buff, Fredrich Goldentrill - Barihunk Trouble Incarnate - and Tristana Straight, all weird in their own way. You won't see Wolftreudle Birdwhistle and you'll find out why. Laughs probable, applause compulsory. There is a $15 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

SF: LYDIA PENSE & COLD BLOOD WITH RICK STEVENS AT YOSHI'S
Lydia Pense & Cold Blood perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Friday, May 10th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Lydia Pense & Cold Blood debuted when the Fillmore was at its peak as one of the nation's musical Meccas. That music still holds up today, proving that great music is timeless and will continue to inspire generations to come. Rick Stevens vocals first came to prominence when he sang on Sparkling in the Sand from East Bay Grease, Tower of Power's first album on San Francisco Records. In 1972, he forever etched his place in music history with the memorable You're Still a Young Man, from the album Bump City, leading to TOP's first chart record. There is a $26 (8:00 pm) or $19 (10:00 pm) cover.

DC THROUGH SUNDAY: GRAND SLAM AT THE BLUES ALLEY
GRAND SLAM (Jim Hall, Joe Lovano, George Mraz & Lewis Nash) will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) Thursday through Sunday, May 9th through 12th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Stemming from the recording made live at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Massachusetts from January 2000. This diverse, creative group features songs written by Jim Hall and Joe Lovano that range from unaccompanied to orchestral. This group's debut reveals the edge and tenderness in their music and also describes various periods of the guitarist's career. Sonically Grand Slam recalls the early 60's Sonny Rollins band (The Bridge ) in which Hall also played, but this band plays more adventurous music and is more together as a unit. Hall has evolved, and Nash and Mraz are simply better, more sympathetic musicians than their predecessors. Call for cover/minimum information.
