Suzanne's passion for his work has spanned most of her performing career and she is therefore very excited to bring his words and music to new audiences for the first time at Davenport's. Steve Tyrell is returning for his fifth engagement in the Royal Room, where he made his debut in January 2008. The Grammy Award-winning vocalist is truly a renaissance man. CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

March is Cabaret Month, and The Scrap Exchange will kick off the local festivities on Friday, March 1st at 7:00 pm by hosting Scraparet, a cabaret inspired fundraiser in the Green Gallery at THE SCRAP EXCHANGE (923 Franklin Street, Durham, NC - 919-688-6960 ). Scraparet will feature the Triangle's best loved cabaret duo, Ellen Ciompi (vocal) and Glenn Mehrbach (piano), performing their most requested songs. You'll hear everything from sweet love songs to heartbreaking torch songs to hilarious comedic numbers, written by composers classic and contemporary. Ciompi and Mehrbach have been creating cabaret shows together in the Triangle since 2002. Together they explore the traditional cabaret literature of the Great American Song Book and Broadway & Hollywood musicals. They also expand the genre to embrace songwriters as diverse as Paul Simon, Tom Waits, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Harry Chapin, Sting, and even Lady Gaga! The Scrap Exchange is an art gallery dedicated to showcasing creative re-use artists throughout the region. This event marks the first performance to be held inside the art gallery space. The audience will not only enjoy an evening of cabaret, they will also be surrounded by the sculptural found-object artwork of Shelly Hehenberger, who will be the featured artist in the Green Gallery in early March. Mary Foster Conklin returns to the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) with her acclaimed show LIFE IS A BITCH on Fridays, March 1st & 8th at 7:00 pm. She is joined by John diMartino on piano, with Greg Ryan on bass and special vocal guest John diPinto. The show is a collection of songs by Fran Landesman, the self-proclaimed "poet laureate of lovers and losers," best remembered as the lyricist of The Nervous Set, the world's first (and only) beatnik musical, which premiered in St. Louis in 1959 and later flopped on Broadway. Two numbers from the show, "All the Sad Young Men" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" were widely recorded and became jazz standards. The evening will consist of a musical assortment of Landesman collaborators, including Tommy Wolf, Alec Wilder, Bob Dorough, Roy Kral, Simon Wallace and John Simon, with a special nod to past singers who were champions of Fran's songs, like Jackie and Roy and Suzannah McCorkle. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. The Octet features Michael Bates, bass; Gene Lewin, drums; Bob Kindred, tenor sax; Jamie Fox guitar and backup vocals by Emily Bindiger, Margaret Dorn and Kathryn Raio. "Tapestry Rewoven", their blues, and R&B-influenced homage to the classic album has played live to standing ovations around the country since its 2008 debut building momentum and a fantastic following along the way. They have tried to develop a project that is jazz at it's best: smart, inventive and very very accessible. The goal has always been to memorialize this tribute and use it for the greater good: to use the "user friendly" aspects of this recording to be part of the movement of educators and artists who promote jazz to the next generation of listeners - so this great American treasure stays alive.
