WASHINGTON, DC: CHRIS THOMAS KING AT BLUES ALLEY

Chris Thomas King, a determined progressive, will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, January 8th through 11th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. King is hoping to reinvigorate the blues as a living African American art with a more contemporary approach and adamantly refusing to treat it as a museum piece whose "authentic" forms needed careful preservation. King eventually modified that approach to a certain degree, attempting to create a more explicit link between blues tradition and the general musical present. Chris Thomas King is a New Orleans Grammy Award-winning musician and actor who is initially known for his audacious fusion of blues and hip-hop. King reached a whole new audience with his film debut in the Coen Brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, not only appearing on the award-winning soundtrack, but establishing himself as a serious dramatic actor as well. Colin is the founder, owner and Chairman of the Board of the Sunwing Travel Group, comprising Sunwing Airlines and Sunwing Vacations, one of the most important leisure travel organizations in Canada. However, Colin has always had another passion in his life: music! A huge fan of the hit songs performed by artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole, Colin fulfilled a long-held dream in 2005, with the release of his first CD, appropriately titled "Come Fly With Me" to coincide with the inaugural flights of Sunwing Airlines. Since then Colin has made 9 more albums, with Big bands from Ontario and Quebec, and with renowned jazz pianist Joe Sealy. His love of music lead him to opening a Toronto Jazz Club: THE JAZZ BISTRO! Colin and his wife Joan wanted to offer the public a comfortable up-scale jazz club, featuring top names from Toronto and international fame, while enjoying delicious food. Colin can often be found on his stage filling the Club with his laid back crooner classics. No cover, just a $25 food/drink minimum. Anthony Terpstra born in Oakville in 1952 to Dutch immigrants who wanted their son to study classical music. However, on hearing a Count Basie record (which he still has) Anthony fell in love with it and decided to be a jazz musician when he grew up. Anthony Terpstra's Seventet is a unique ensemble put together, not to replace the big band, but as an added feature. Influenced by the small band writing of Marty Paich and Gerry Mulligan, the Seventet has a rich sound with clean lines, contrapuntal writing and soloing in and out of ensemble. No Cover/$25 minimum food/beverage per person.

NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturday, January 10th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: JOE LOVANO'S VILLAGE RHYTHMS BAND AT BIRDLAND

Joe Lovano's Village Rhythms Band will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Friday & Saturday, January 9th & 10th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. At Cleveland's infamous "Togo Suite," a then 28-year old Joe Lovano met and performed with a group of Nigerian musicians involved in an impromptu and joyous cultural exchange. About one year later on his 29th birthday in 1981, as a result of that initial late night club session, Lovano found himself in Lagos, Nigeria, meeting and spending time with the esteemed godfather of the afro-beat movement - Fela Kuti. The meeting of Kuti and his extended family of musicians led to a performance with the Cleveland and Nigerian musicians joined together in "Tafawa Balewa Square." The entire experience of performing with Kuti and his family left Lovano with a lasting feeling that still touches him to this day, and a new sense of possibilities within his own music - in all aspects of the sonic palette. Over three decades later, one of the most prominent voices in jazz, looks back to a historic musical landmark in his life and brings it into his own evolving musical vernacular. Joined by guitarist Liberty Ellman, electric bassist Matthew Garrison, percussionist/African harpist Abdou Mboup, and drummer Otis Brown III; "The Village Rhythm Band" showcases the linear relationship between West African music and jazz in a way that is totally unique to Lovano's voice - warm, sinuous, and constantly moving over an emphatic pulse. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

Gerald Clayton, Joe Sanders and Justin Brown, some of the rising stars in the jazz world, have been recent performers on Monterey stages, both at the Monterey Jazz Festival itself, and as high school students at the Festival's student competition, the Next Generation Jazz Festival. The Monterey Jazz Festival has presented nearly every major jazz star - from Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong to Esperanza Spalding and Trombone Shorty - since it was founded in 1958. Held every third full weekend in September on the Monterey County Fairgrounds, the Monterey Jazz Festival is a three-day celebration of music, commissioned jazz compositions, in-depth conversations with artists, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, clinics, and an international array of food, shopping, and festivities spread throughout 20 acres. A nonprofit organization, Monterey Jazz Festival now budgets more than $500,000 annually for jazz education. Cutting-edge educational components include the Traveling Clinician and Latin Jazz Programs; the Festival's Summer Jazz Camp; the Instrument and Sheet Music Library; the Digital Education Music Project; the Monterey County High School All-Star Bands; and the Next Generation Jazz Festival - which draws thousands of the most talented young musicians from across the country and around the world to Monterey each spring. The Artist-In-Residence Program, a key component of Monterey Jazz Festival's philosophy of bringing leading jazz performers to work with students throughout the year, includes their appearance at the Next Generation Jazz Festival, Summer Jazz Camp and the Monterey Jazz Festival, both in performance and instruction. There is a $20-$35 cover.

WASHINGTON, DC: CHRIS THOMAS KING AT BLUES ALLEY

King eventually modified that approach to a certain degree, attempting to create a more explicit link between blues tradition and the general musical present. Chris Thomas King is a New Orleans Grammy Award-winning musician and actor who is initially known for his audacious fusion of blues and hip-hop.
