NYC TOP PICK: BARB JUNGR CELEBRATES U.S. RELEASE OF "THE MEN I LOVE"

NYC TOP PICK: BARB JUNGR CELEBRATES U.S. RELEASE OF "THE MEN I LOVE"

To celebrate the USA release of her new CD "The Men I Love," from NAIM Label (distributed in the U.S. by Allegro) on May 11, Barb Jungr returns to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) for a one-week engagement, Tuesday through Sunday, May 18th through 23rd at 7:30 pm (7:00 pm on Tuesday & Sunday). Her new show, "River," is her eighth engagement at The Metropolitan Room since she first performed there in 2007. The show is a collection of iconic songs from the late 20th century that rarely are heard in jazz and cabaret rooms and includes a number of standouts from last year's acclaimed show "The Men I Love". Jungr, who is best known for her amazing deconstructions of songs by American rockers, has subtitled the new album "The New American Songbook." Jungr implies with her eye-opening interpretations (that reveal latent emotional content when she dislodges the songs from their original contexts), that many American songwriters from the rock era and beyond are not a breed apart from their predecessors like Gershwin, Kern, Mercer and Berlin. Is it right to have already closed the book (or the door) on the Great American Songbook? Jungr believes it is still being written and that Dylan, Springsteen and Cohen can comfortably sit beside Porter and the rest. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II - BLOG EDITION

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

We fulfilled our cabaret plans so far for this week, with plans to attend Barb Jungr's show at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM tonight at 7:30 pm and then MargOH Channing's show at THE DUPLEX at 9:30 pm. Nice thing about ending the night at the DUPLEX is that there's a bus the runs from 7th Avenue in the West Village straight across town almost to my front door! Drawback is that after midnight it runs only every half hour.
Now, the coffers are empty (mainly my wallet) so I need some folks who promised to send membership payments (over $300 worth) and who received their requested PayPal invoices to send in their payments today so I won'd have to cut back on my cabaret plans. Everyone is invited to join as a member - see the information and links near the top of this issue.

Also, check out the information just below the first part of HERE & THERE above about the date of our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE 20th ANNIVERSARY GALA on July 13th at THE LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATER - tickets go on sale (online only) on June 5th. 2010-2011 will have a chance to order tickets a few days earlier. But SPONSORS who qualify, can order tickets now. If you would like to be a sponsor - $100 per unit - you can start that operation today - for a $100 sponsorship you get a free 1/4 page ad in the 20th Anniversary Program Booklet. Sponsors who take 2 units ($200) get one free ticket and 1/2 page. Every $100 sponsorship unit above $200 gets one additional free ticket plus an additional 1/4 page ad. All sponsor tickets will get preferred seating at the show. All sponsored will have their name and website URL included on all promotional materials (where possible) for the event. (Anonymous Donations Accepted - please so note on your donation.) Just click here to make a donation in units of $100.
http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/thankyou1sponsor.shtml
We haven't set the ticket price yet - partly because the more sponsors the lower we will set the price. All 2010-2011 members SILVER and above, will get a $10 discount on the ticket price.

Once again we have included in this issue nearly all the cabaret news items for which releases have been received through May, and even to June 7th. We are just now beginning to received the June schedules from the cabaret venues so there may be more items for the first week or two in June in Monday's issue.

Every day we move all the shows from our CABARET LISTINGS for that date to the home (index) page of the website - http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ - and then a few hours later we post our special picks of the day from that list to the blog - http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ , and at the same time we post a note on TWITTER - http://twitter.com/cabarethotline on each pick with a link to the item on the blog. The Twitter feed also appears on the home page of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website if you want to see what other items we're promoting - we add to our Twitter feed items of cabaret interest we find on other Twitter feeds. If you join and follow us on Twitter, we'll pass along your cabaret-related news to our almost 300 followers as well.

See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2010-2011. Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support. Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!

NYC: RAVEN O SPENDS MORE NIGHTS WITH YOU

After a thrilling 2-night series this winter, the legendary NYC performer Raven ORaven O returns with his one-man show, One Night With You - an autobiographical look at his life in story and song - to THE BLEEKER STREET THEATER (45 Bleecker Street, NYC - TKTS: ) on Tuesday nights at 8:00 pm starting on May 18th through August 31st. Known worldwide for his starring role in Cirque Du Soleil's Zumanity, Raven O is a master at captivating audiences. On stage, he is the son of the devil one minute, a soul wrenching swan singer the next. His performances are fearless, provocative and often times off-the-wall. At 18, he entered and won a dance contest with a first place prize being a roundtrip ticket to New York City. He later learned the organizers did not have enough money to cover a return trip. They offered Raven O a one-way ticket and he took it - never looking back. He soon became a fixture in the East Village club world. He sung in dark, seedy underground cabarets and burlesque theatre houses. Cirque Du Soleil was a major turning point for the performer. The troupe invited Raven O to host their Zumanity show in Las Vegas. In 2007, after three long years in Las Vegas, Raven O returned to his love - New York City. Raven O is currently preparing to release his first musical CD this summer. For information, ticket price & reservations, go tohttp://www.telecharge.com/ .

Legendary Jimmy Scott at Bohemian Caverns

Legendary Jimmy Scott at Bohemian Caverns
produced by Jill Newman Productions
This Friday & Saturday May 21 & 22

Jimmy Scott achieved notoriety as an R&B singer and pop balladeer and eventually established himself as a jazz singer. Billie Holiday often singled him out as her favorite. His career took off with the 1949 jukebox hit "Everybody's Somebody's Fool," with Lionel Hampton's big band, and includes a series of 1950s-60s recordings for the Roost, Coral, Brunswick, and Savoy labels.

Born in 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio, Scott was one of 10 siblings who often sang together in church accompanied by their mother on piano. However, Kallmann's Syndrome, a hereditary hormonal deficiency, stunted Jimmy's growth and his voice never fully deepened. As a result on some of his recordings, the vocals were mistakenly credited to Irma Curry. In fact the keening, feline vocals belong to one Jimmy Scott - a fact not lost on the swooning female fans that followed him adoringly through the next decade.

Acknowledgment may have come late, but it has come in large doses. Jimmy Scott has won an NEA "Jazz Master Award" and a Kennedy Center "Living Jazz Legend Award." He was also the recipient of a "Pioneer Award" from the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters.
