NYC: FREDDY COLE AT BIRDLAND THIS WEEK - CLOSES TONIGHT

NYC: FREDDY COLE AT BIRDLAND THIS WEEK - CLOSES TONIGHT

Freddy Cole (Piano/Vocals) will be appearing at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) Tuesday through Saturday, December 20th through 24th, with performances at 9:00 & 11:00 pm. Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat "King" Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and sings and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the awesome shadow cast by his elder brother. In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother and his timing swings a little more. Cole's career continues to ascend as he has moved into the front ranks of America's homegrown art form with a style and musical sophistication all his own. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: FREDDY COLE AT BIRDLAND THIS WEEK

NYC: FREDDY COLE AT BIRDLAND THIS WEEK

NYC: THE WISHBONE PROJECT CD RELEASE AT IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB

NYC: THE WISHBONE PROJECT CD RELEASE AT IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB

The Wishbone Project, a newly formed quintet led by Kat Gang and Nate Mayland, will perform at IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Tuesday, December 20th at 10:00 pm. Kat and Nate, who have discovered in each other the rare gem of inspiration have created a distinct sound by exploring the unique blend of the trombone and voice. The similar range and crystal timbre of both allow for either to take the lead while the other complements, or for the two of them launch into fiery harmonized bebop lines. Their songs are lyrical and reminiscent of jazz standards, yet are full of modern elements that life and performance in NYC has infused in them. Kat Gang has a soul steeped in jazz. Born in Boston she began her music theory training as a teenager at Berklee and then fell in love with the energy of New York City and went on to gain her BFA from NYU. Kat lived and worked singing jazz all over England for seven years. A native of Chicago via Madison, Wisconsin, Nate Mayland has been freelancing as a trombonist and composer in NYC since 2001. Sharing the stage and studio with such diverse artists as Bernadette Peters to Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes, from Harry Connick, Jr. to Eddie Santiago, from South Pacific to The Chico O'Farrill Jazz Orchestra, his ear for harmony and melody has been shaped into an edgy yet reverent tool with which he returns to the world all that he has absorbed. There is a $25 cover cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

In today's column, Sue writes about the low attendance lately at many NYC cabaret events. She recommends some shows coming up over the next few weeks, and has some great news about several cabaret events she and MATSUKI PRODUCTIONS are presenting in NYC and Connecticut.

I also added today's issue of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE newsletter, with some special news about the BISTRO & MAC ARARDS and more tips, updates and cabaret talk. I also have a brief review of the past year in cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) including some special highlights of 2011.
