NYC: RICHARD PRYOR JR. AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

Born in Peoria, Illinois, on April 10, 1962, at only 6 months, the first-born son of camed comic/actor Richard Pryor and his first wife, Patricia Watts, had to stay in the hospital for several weeks until he reached 5 pounds - and he was so small, his parents had to buy doll socks to fit his feet. In 1981, Richard entered the Navy and was stationed in San Diego and Virginia Beach - but it was during a stint in Scotland that he continued his desire to perform: He started lip-synching to songs, and started doing drag professionally for the first time back in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Two years later, in 1983, he left the Navy, moved back to Peoria, and became involved in female-impersonation shows and the pageant system, performing on stage with dancers and actors and doing drag until the late 1980s. His mother, Patricia Price, died in 2003, and in 2005, when his comedic icon and award-winning father died of a heart attack, Richard decided to expand on everything he had been working for: As a tribute to his father, this talented singer and actor decided to re-launch his career. No stranger to doing all kinds of things, Richard did porter work but soon learned about the New York Artist Unlimited Theatre - Downeast Art Center - and landed a part in a play at CringeFest, substituting for a cast member. Also, at this time, Richard was becoming more involved with his other love: singing. Not only did he perform at the world-famous Birdland in New York City, as well as at the Metropolitan Room, he became a member and performer at the famed Friars Club. And he sang in numerous venues throughout the U.S., as well as at the Catskills in New York state, the Jazz Celebration Series in upstate New York, Chicago, Indiana and a five-show performance in Michigan. Comic Suzanne Westenhoefer will perform at THE COPA (244 East Amado Road, Palm Springs CA - 760-866-0021) on Thursday & Friday, October 2nd & 3rd at 7:30 pm. Suzanne is, in a word: Candid. For over two decades, this bold and brazen out lesbian comedian has been traveling the world, sharing her heart and soul with audiences. Whatever is going on in Suzanne's life, you'll get an earful of it. She doesn't tell jokes. She tells the truth. Or the truth as filtered through her uniquely twisted life experience. Raised by a single mom in Pennsylvania's Amish Country, Suzanne knows what it's like to stick out like a sore thumb. It made her even more daring and precocious. Suzanne's extraordinary candor made a life in the closet impossible. The minute she knew she was a lesbian, everyone else knew, too. Luckily, someone put a microphone in her hand so we could laugh along with her. Call for cover/minimum information.

The sexy/ quirky/ mysterious Brazilian Girls are three men - Didi Gutman on keyboards and computers, Jesse Murphy on bass, and Aaron Johnston on drums - and one woman, Sabina Sciubba, the vocalist who often enjoys wearing lacy eye masks on-stage and sings in no less than five different languages. Sciubba was born in Rome but grew up in Nice and Munich before settling in Brooklyn, NY. She first came to record buyers' attention when she recorded two jazz albums - You Don't Know What Love Is with pianist Chris Anderson and Meet Me in London with guitarist Antonio Forcione - for the English audiophile label Naim. Falling into the new, playful downtown scene that was revolving around the Nublu club helped speed the band's success. Like-minded bands like Wax Poetic and the Nublu Orchestra had made the club the hip spot in 2004 for adventurous pop fans and Brazilian Girls' free-form, bouncy kind of jamming fit right in. Soon they had the Saturday night slot at Nublu, and the East Village press had fallen in love with them. There is a $35 cover - dance floor open.
