MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II - BLOG EDITION

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

I don't know how Scott Siegel & Co. are able to put on a better show than the last every time in the current series of BROADWAY BY THE YEAR shows at THE TOWN HALL! Monday night's salute to the show of 1966 was an all-time spectacular. Of course, 1966 was the year of CABARET, MAME, SWEET CHARITE & I DO! I DO! (to name a few) so there were some truly memorable songs to present. And the cast this time out was another stellar grouping - including several that were great dancers as well as great singers! Once again, Ross Patterson's musical direction & arrangements and his "Little Big Band" gave the whole show an extra dimension. And Ross contributed another great part of the evening: his 9 year old son Mercer stole the show singing "My Best Girl" from MAME. Next show (and last of this year's 10th Anniversary Series of BROADWAY BY THE YEAR) will cover 21 years of Broadway - 21 performers, singing 21 songs from 21 shows, one from each year, 1990 to 2010! Tickets are on sale now! I wonder is Scott, in his introduction, that 1990 was the year that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE began publishing?

We had 2 winners - a tie - in our recent MEMBERS ONLY 2010 MAC AWARDS PICK-THE-WINNERS contest - Gretchen Reinhagen (an actual MAC Award winner) and songwriter Bob Levy. I'm trying to figure out an inexpensive way to get their free CDs (3 each) to them and will contact them about this. A big thank you to all the members who took part! Next time we do something like this, I hope more of members will send in an entry - less than 100 of our nearly 400 members sent in entries. I'm working on our news MEMBERS ONLY contest - but waiting for more members to join/renew. We hold the events 4 or 5 times a year.

I've been working on a new CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE project for several months now - originally to kick of on March 1st with our MARCH IS CABARET MONTH promotion, but ran out of time and funds. Next attempt at "lift off" will be June 1st - stay tuned.

Here's what happens when you purchase an ad on CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE. Your ad or banner gets seen thousands of times a week, but there's more. Your event/CD gets a plug in every issue of the twice-weekly newsletter, sent to over 2,700 subscribers (and these are folks who actually subscribed, not a mailing list purchased to collected without their knowledge or consent). And if it's a show or other cabaret event, the item gets added to the CABARET LISTINGS section. Then, when the date (or dates) of the event comes up, it gets placed on the home (opening) page of the website, and promoted with a plug on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG. And items, when posted on the blog, get automatically plugged as well on TWITTER (currently about 250 followers on each of our TWITTER accounts)!
A two-week ad can be yours for as little as $50. And we just lowered our BANNER AD prices! No more premium on the first 2 weeks! That means a regular banner will now cost just $30 per week right from the start (before rebates and/or discounts) and will appear at random on all 6700 pages on the website! The only pages not displaying ads are in the "Cabaret Remembers" section. Check out all the prices/sizes/types of ads by clicking on the ADVERTISING INFO button at the top of every page - or simply click here:
By the way, we can have your banner or ad up and running in less than 48 hours! Faster if you send completed, sized artwork! All ads have a 2-week minimum.
By the way, by purchasing an ad, you not only promote your own show, but you help with the expenses of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - which enable us to promote everyone's shows!

See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2010-2011. Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support. Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!
Look for more news on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ), on this blog and updates, picks & reminders on TWITTER ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ).

HERE & THERE - PART I - BLOG EDITION

HERE & THERE - PART I

I'm sort of happy to report that with this issue we've used up all the news items for May! If your press release item isn't in this issue - and isn't already on the website in the Cabaret Listings section, you had better send it again! Remember the rule: A flier is not a press release. The same goes if you send me an "invite" - those complicated, multi-column affairs with imbedded photos, etc. I usually cannot use them, since often important information is graphic rather than type. Just look at any of the items in the listings - especially the longer ones - to see what I am looking for.
I received one "listing" the other day about an event coming up over the Memorial Day weekend that was just on sentence! It was very nearly a "tweet" - name of club, date & time and name of performer, and little else! And someone else, from Los Angeles sent me, via regular mail, a release for a show on May 7th & 8th (mailed on April 26th) that didn't arrive in my box until Monday the 10th! This is an internet publication - I do not need a piece of paper with the information. Send everything - including jpg photos as attachments (not imbedded in the document) - by email. Save on postage, save walking to the mailbox (anyone notice about half the mailboxes around town have disappeared?).
One extra caveat: If you are only posting items on the MAC, BACA, CCP group lists instead of sending items to me directly, don't assume that I will catch them and add them the the newsletter & website. And, most importantly, I am not a member of FaceBook. Don't miss out on the free promotion that CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE offers you by forgetting to send me your releases and show information.

Thanks for all who sent in comments and promised to send a card to Margaret Whiting in response to our mention in the last issue - I'm sure your thoughts and prayers will be appreciated. And we remind you all of another friend, Gregory Kennell, who remains at St. Elizabeth Ann's Health Care & Rehabilitation Facility on Staten Island. There was an episode a week or so ago that made it necessary for him to be temporarily moved to a regular hospital, but now he has returned to continue his rehabilitation. For the information of new subscribers, Greg is undergoing the therapeutic process necessary to help him regain motor skills and return to a normal life after almost two months in a coma at St. Vincent's Hospital as a result of demyelinating encephalitis and related consequences. Mr. Kennell is a former member of the MAC Board of Directors, and over the years designed fliers, advertisements and logos (including the logo for CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) for performers, organizations and clubs. Please continue to remember him in your thoughts and prayers as well.

I've decided not to wait any longer for a show order/song list for the MAC AWARDS event held on May 4th - I've written about 90% and will finish it tomorrow and put it on the website. If I miss (or misspell) anyone's name, or have the order of the show slightly out of kilter, or don't include the name of a song or two, please excuse. I've included some comments about the overall MAC awards system as well. It's not a show review - its a report of the evening. I'll let you know on TWITTER when it is up and running.

The first 65 membership cards were sent out Tuesday - valid through July 5, 2011. I am hoping to get to 200 members by July 6th, which is the "official" 20th Anniversary of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (and my 71st birthday as well). As I've recounted so many times, the publication started with a report on my birthday celebration in 1990, sent to a few dozen friends and family. Folks wanted more, so we bagan sending out brief letters (by regular mail, back then, since the internet was just in its infancy). We didn't switch to an email edition until 1997. We now send out over 2700 issues of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE twice a week, a MEMBERS ONLY issue every Saturday, plus we maintain this CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website visited by as many as 10,000 a day (average is about 6,000) and a second website ( http://www.CabaretSings.com/ ) where performers can connect with songwriters. Then there's this which is updated daily with news of cabaret, including items taken from the newsletter and the website. There are 4 TWITTER streams, including my personal account http://twitter.com/stuhamstrawhere I make mostly corny comments on the passing scene (and not just cabaret).
Your membership donations help keep this all going (I'm retired now form the 9-to-5 scene) so if you enjoy and appreciate what this is all about, and our efforts to promÅ’ote the art and the artists of cabaret, here's your chance to support our efforts. Just click on the button marked JOIN HERE at the top of every page on the website for details on all the levels and benefits of membership (which start at $5) or click here

I had an unanticipated expense yesterday that took me away from the computer for several hours. I spilled just a few drops of coffee on my computerkeyboard on Tuesday morning - not much but enough to make the letters "s" and "x" inoperable. I actually was able to use a workaround "virtual keyboard" that's on every MAC in order to send out information to the members who joined for the new year, while I waited for some membership or banner payments to come in. So yesterday, around 10:30 am, I headed to the Apple Store at the opposite end of 14th Street (at 10th Avenue) to purchase a new one. It's a simple bus ride that actually takes me from my front door on 10th Street, up Avenue C, and across town. But around 10:15 am, a huge fire broke out in a row of stores on 14th Street at the corner of Avenue A. So we had gone just 1 block on 14th, turned left on B, then to 10th Street (one block from where we started) then across to A, then left to 9th Street and across to First Avenue and back to 14th to go across town! Instead of the usual 45 minutes, it took nearly 90! I was meeting my pal Daniel at the store, and of course we spent some time checking out the new iPads. and then decided to have lunch out before attempting to go back across town on 14th Street. City living can be fun, most of the time, but it certainly is exciting all of the time!

Blanchard is one of the most influential jazz musicians and film score masters of his generation, a member of a jazz legacy that has shaped modern jazz. With more than 29 albums and multiple Grammy Awards and nominations to his credit as a musician, Blanchard is even more widely recognized for his work as a composer for film. Director Spike Lee first took note of his performances on the scores for Do the Right Thing and Mo' Better Blues, and subsequently hired Blanchard to compose the score for each of his films since 1991, including Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Clockers, Summer of Sam, and Inside Man. A New Orleans native, Terence also composed the score for Lee's When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, an HBO documentary special about Hurricane Katrina. In addition to his extensive film work, the trumpeter and bandleader has maintained a long and successful career as a live performer. When Wynton Marsalis left Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1982, Blanchard succeeded him and stayed with the band until 1986. NYC: GREG EDELMAN IS "BACK IN TOWN" TONIGHT & TOMORROW NIGHT

NYC: GREG EDELMAN IS "BACK IN TOWN" FOR TWO NIGHTS IN MAY

Greg Edelman brings his show "Back in Town" to the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Thursday & Friday, May 13th & 14th at 7:30 pm. "Back in Town" is a jaunty new show that just enjoyed a highly successful premiere at Feinstein's in New York City. The title harkens back to those "long ago" nights when people regularly went to see top singers each time they returned to their favorite supper clubs, places like The Empire Room in Chicago, The Coconut Grove in Los Angeles, and The Persian Room in New York City. Gregg approaches his blue chip repertoire, which includes both classics from the Great American Songbook and a few selections of more recent vintage, with genuine affection and a natural, effortless swing. With fourteen Broadway shows and four TONY nominations to his credit, Chicago native Gregg Edelman has starred on Broadway, television and in film for over twenty years. His roles on Broadway in City of Angels, Wonderful Town, 1776 and Les Mis, to mention just a few, have also earned him the Drama Desk Award as well as numerous Outer Critics nominations. His movie credits include Kate Winslet's husband in Little Children and Peter Parker's doctor in Spiderman 2. There is a $30 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II - BLOG EDITION

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

I was hoping to send off the new membership cards yesterday to the 2010-2011 members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE - several folks have already joined who were not members for 2009-2010, and I know they want to get in on those show discounts as soon as possible. I'm afraid I took a break from working yesterday to attend a family celebration in Queens (not my family actually, but the family of a friend) for Mothers Day. I really am not comfortable going to parties and celebrations at someone else's home, but this was "safe" - it was in a restaurant, just about 75 feet from a subway entrance for any necessary hasty escape - and it was a Columbian restaurant. I could not resist, especially since I dine out so rarely lately.
So, I shall return to the task after this issue goes out, and after I code it up and load it up on the website. I may not get it completed today, since I will be going to the BROADWAY BY THE YEAR 1966 show at THE TOWN HALL tonight, but tomorrow is one of my "free days" and sort of my weekend - two days in a row without publishing a newsletter!

In that connection, I hope as many current members as possible will renew their memberships in the next week or so - we have a very busy June coming up, and by renewing early (all memberships expire on July 5th) I can get a lot of the work done early as well on the website and elsewhere. This year we are including FaceBook addresses to the member listings in addition to website URLS, MySpace addresses and Twitter contacts where applicable. And the Member CD Sales all have to be updated, and the member YouTube links.
Once again, here are the membership levels and costs:
$5 - $19 - SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIP (via PayPal only)
$20 - $49 - SILVER MEMBERSHIP
$50 - GOLD MEMBERSHIP
$100 - CRYSTAL MEMBERSHIP
$250 - PLATINUM MEMBERSHIP
$500 - DIAMOND MEMBERSHIP
$1000 - DIAMOND SELECT MEMBERSHIP
Full details of benefits for each level of membership are on the website - just click on the JOIN HERE button at the top of every page. 2010-2011 Membership cards will be valid through July 5th, 2011. If you decide to join by check (for over $19), please remember, all checks should be made out simply to STU HAMSTRA and mailed to 676A Ninth Avenue #120, New York, NY 10036.
Or you can donate instantly via PayPal using a credit/debit card for whatever amount you wish! Just click here - from the amount of your donation we can determine the level.

HERE &THERE - PART I - BLOG EDITION

HERE &THERE - PART I

I guess we all (at least in the Western Hemisphere) awoke to the news that the much loved Lena Horne had passed away at age 92. In reading some of the bios and obituaries this morning I was struck by the fact that being a pioneer is not always a joy-filled task. Again and again, as Ms. Horne became the first of her race to succeed in various fields of entertainment, she expressed her unhappiness and loneliness. It seemed that each time she discovered that she could only go so far, so moved on the be a pioneer in a new field. One can only wonder where we would be today if it was not for folks like Ms. Horne who saw every obstacle as a challenge, and every success as a step rather than a destination.

I want to once again ask all to remember one of our cabaret icons, Margaret Whiting, in your thoughts and prayers. You might want to send her a note or a card at The Actors Home, 155 West Hudson Avenue, Englewood, NJ 07631-1699 - I know they will be appreciated. While she is able to make phone calls, because of her need for rest you are asked not to phone the home.

Quick note received from Scott Siegel about tonight's BROADWAY BY THE YEAR 1966 at THE TOWN HALL: Carole J. Bufford (who was such a great hit when she appeared in one of the TOWN HALL events a few months ago), has been added to cast. She is doing a reprise of her Randy Newman "Under The Covers" show at DON'T TELL MAMA tonight at 7:00 pm, and then will rush over to THE TOWN HALL to sing "What Makes it Happen?" by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen from 1966 Tony-Nominated musical Walking Happy. You can still get tickets through TicketMaster, 212-307-4100, http://www.ticketmaster.com/ , or The Town Hall Box Office between noon and 6:00 pm (except Sundays).

Local Illinois musician Bob Acri is celebrating the addition of his song "Sleep Away" to Windows 7 by donating the proceeds of his CD "The Cavalcade of Music Foundation Presents Bob Acri" to the THE SKOKIE THEATRE MUSIC FOUNDATION (7924 Lincoln Avenue, Skokie, IL - 847-677-7761 -http://www.skokietheatre.org/ ). Acri was raised in Chicago, attending Austin High School and becoming a staff pianist for NBC radio and television at age 17. From there he gathered an impressive array of experience, playing for music greats like Harry James, Woody Herman, Carmen McRae and Barbara Steisand. He didn't get the chance to record his own album until the age of 82, when he debuted with "Timeless" featuring the single "Sleep Away". The single was chosen to appear as a sample song on Windows 7, featured on almost all prebuilt PCs. Now, with the increased exposure, Acri would like to give back to the Skokie Theatre Music Foundation. All of the proceeds for "The Cavalcade of Music Foundation Presents Bob Acri" will be donated to the Foundation. CDs are available on http://www.skokietheatre.org/ with a donation to the theatre.

If you are looking for my report on the MAC AWARDS GALA on Tuesday night at BB KINGS, I was hoping to have a report for the website and the blog over the weekend, but to complete the report I prefer to have at least a running order (no press materials were available at the show), with performers names and the songs they presented. MAC promised to send one, but it hasn't been received yet. I hate to leave something or someone out, mis-spell a name, mis-credit a song, etc. As soon as the information arrives, will complete our writeup. Follow be on TWITTER to be notified at once when the report is posted on the website and the blog.
Meantime, the list of this year's winners (and a link to those nominated) is posted on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website.
