L.A.: TOM DiMENNA AS TELLY SAVALAS IN "WHO LOVES YOU, BABY?"

Tom DiMenna appears as Telly Savalas, in "Who Loves You, Baby?" at the THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444 ) on Wednesday & Thursday, February 16th & 17th at 9:00 pm. Written by Hunter Nelson and directed by Taylor Negron, who met DiMenna at the Edinburgh Fringe two years ago, this show casts a comic light on Telly Savalas' strange grip on the culture of the 1970's in this resurrection of "Savalas the Interpreter of Love Songs," who has returned from heaven with his swaggering charisma to help the "cynical, bed-headed, twenty-somethings of today" re-connect to "That Lovin' Feelin'" that made Savalas, "The Golden Greek," and the era he embodied, so unique. Call for cover/minimum information.

L.A.: RICK'S PICKS SPECIAL SALON SHOW FEBRUARY 19TH - Tribute to Hugh Martin

I don't usually include events held in private residences in the listings or on the website because there is always the question of rights and royalties, and I am a stickler when it comes to songwriters being paid for their works (same goes to photocopying or faxing sheet music, when legal copies are available). But I will make an exception today because the event is for a good cause (THE ACTORS FUND) and the person honored by the event is Rick Starr, former manager of Hollywood Sheet Music, and one of the most beloved members of the Los Angeles music community.

Rick is in increasingly declining health. He's been in the hospital for several months now, facing a series of surgeries and complications that have him basically bedridden. Ever the cheerleader of the world's great songwriters, Rick has maintained a commitment to supervise a Salon Event called "Rick's Picks: A Tribute to Hugh Martin". The event will take place on Saturday, February 19th at 5:00 pm at a private home in Studio City, CA.

A galaxy of Cabaret favorites will perform the Hugh Martin Songbook: Andrea Marcovicci, Jason Graae, Brad Ellis, Shelly Markham, Barbara Minkus, Shelly Goldstein, and Dianne Fraser are among the celebrated singers who will be sharing their talents, and their love, for both Mr. Martin and Mr. Starr. Esteemed New York Pianist, Arranger and Vocal Coach Michael Lavine serves as Musical Director, and acclaimed Cabaret Director Clifford Bell, in collaboration with Rick, directs.

$20 donation includes refreshments. Get the exact location and make reservations by calling 323-769-6447.

Created by and starring Dezur Kenna (NEEDY), star of IN THESE SHOES and the downtown cult favorite ERIK AND THE SNOWMAIDENS and Eric Johnson (LIEVE) original Broadway casts of ME AND MY GIRL, CHESS and ASPECTS OF LOVE, the series debuted on February 14, 2010 with Lieve & Needy's A VD KIND OF LOVE. They are fervently supported (on more the just her piano) by their accompanist, "Miss Em" - Millerville's leading church organist. She is glowingly portrayed by none other than the real Emily Fellner (Musical Director), of DIRTY MAC AND THE BUMPER CROP BOYs and PURE PIAF fame. Each Lieve & Needy show commemorates a special day on the calendar and is performed only once. The series premier, A VD KIND OF LOVE was followed in June 2010 by A TREE GROWS IN MIDTOWN, A Celebration of Arbor Day, in August with STOP WAITING TO EXHALE: Embracing National Relaxation Day and November saw OUT OF THE RUNNING AND OUT OF OUR WAY, A Tribute to the New York City Marathon.
