The Soul-infused R&B group The Spinners will perform atYOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Friday & Saturday, January 24th & 25th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. It should come as no surprise that The Spinners have always made timeless music. Their classic group sound and approach never loses its universal appeal. Throughout the years they have acquired twelve (12) gold records with hits on top of both Pop and R&B charts and they are one of the few groups who can boast of four lead singers. TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: LUAN PHUNG

Luan Phung will perform atTHE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on saturday, January 25th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm as part of the clubs Young Artist Brunch Series. Luan Phung (born 1991in London, England) is a Toronto based improviser, composer, guitarist, and teacher/clinician who works in a broad spectrum of musical idioms. Though his improvisational and compositional approach is often described as "complex" and "modern" his conception is deeply rooted in the classical and jazz tradition. As a result he has been described as "oustanding" and "an impact player" who "raises the bar on so many levels" by distinguished Canadian guitarists Geoff Young and David Occhipinti. His distinct music reflects his reverence of jazz artists such as Lester Young, Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh, and John Coltrane, as well as composers such as J.S. Bach, Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, Olivier Messiaen, and Pierre Boulez. His exploration of serial/dodecaphonic and spectral/overtone language within improvisational contexts, puts him on the vanguard of 'up and coming' young artists.

D.C.: ROY AYERS AT BLUES ALLEY

Roy Ayers performs at BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday, January 23rd through Sunday, January 26th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Constantly performing and recording since the 1960s, he is the most well known jazz vibraphonists. He has produced some of the most loved modern soul-jazz records of all time. Classics beyond genre such as, "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", most influential afro-jazz with musician Fela Kuti, "Africa - Centre Of The World", and the most seminal jazz-funk, such as "Running Away". In his 40-plus years as a vibraphonist, he has produced a string of soul and funk classics that has arguably made him the second-most sampled musician in hip-hop, after James Brown. D.C.: CHRISTIAN SCOTT QUINTET AT THE BOHEMIAN CAVERNS

The Christian Scott Quintet will perform at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) on Friday & Saturday, January 24th & 25th at 8:00 pm. One of the brightest jazz stars to emerge in the last few years is trumpeter Christian Scott. Steeped in the jazz tradition and intent on participating in the music's evolution, the New York-based Berklee College of Music grad is indeed a significant new voice poised to make an impact on the future of jazz. Scott is a natural. Only 29, the trumpeter has both the tone and the conviction of the great players of his instrument. He eschews cliche and gimmickry in favor of an expressive sensibility and a willingness to break rules when it makes musical sense to him. A New Orleans native, Scott represents the next generation of Crescent City horn blowers whose lineage started with the legendary King Oliver and Louis Armstrong and has continued with such marquee trumpeters as Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton.

MARYLAND: ANTONE "CHOOKY" CALDWELL AT BETHESDA BLUES

Antone "Chooky" Caldwell will perform at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500 - ) on Saturday, January 25th at 8:00 pm. Caldwell has musically supported such renowned artists as Mariah Carey, Andrae Crouch, Macy Gray, Shirley Caesar, Darryl Coley, Heather Headley, Sisqo, Snoop Dogg, Ray-J, The Pussycat Dolls and Will I Am of the Black-Eyed Peas. In 2009 Antone' produced the contemporary jazz album entitled "New Beginnings" by Skii Johnson. The album was #1 for two weeks and in the top 5 for 2 1/2 months on Billboard. In February 2011, Chooky released his current album "Bassically Chook" live at the Kennedy Center on the Millennium Stage. The album features various genres of music with an urban contemporary jazz foundation. There is a $22 cover.

FLORIDA: STEVE TYRELL AT THE ROYAL ROOM IN JANUARY

Steve Tyrell returns in January for his sixth engagement in the THE ROYAL ROOM at THE COLONY HOTEL (155 Hammond Avenue, Palm Beach, FL - 561-659-8100) where he made his debut in January 2008. Performances are scheduled for Tuesdays through Saturdays, January 7th through 25th at 8:00 pm.The Grammy Award-winning vocalist is truly a renaissance man. In his four and a half decades in the music business, he has achieved great success as an artist, producer, songwriter, music supervisor, and performer. With his breakthrough performances in Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride II, Tyrell reinvented and re-popularized classic pop standards for a modern-day audience. His hits "The Way You Look Tonight," "The Simple Life," "Crush On You" and "The Sunny Side of The Street," have launched thousands of weddings and millions of romances. He's held top positions at Standards, Swing, and Big Band outlets with a devoted following at key Adult Contemporary Radio. He has appeared with The Boston Pops, twice with The New York Pops, The Nashville Symphony, and The Houston Symphony on several occasions. At the request of the Sinatra family and Quincy Jones, Tyrell was the featured performer with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at their season opening concert in which Frank Sinatra was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Also at the request of the Sinatra family, he reprised that performance this past May at Carnegie Hall. NYC: JAY LEONHART AT BIRDLAND

Bassist Jay Leonhart performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, January 4, 18th & 25th at 6:00 pm. Combining the skills of an old school entertainer and virtuoso jazz man, bassist, vocalist and composer Jay Leonhart has been a fixture of the New York scene for over forty years. When Jay was fourteen he started playing the bass in The Pier Five Dixieland Jazz Band in Baltimore and never looked back. After studying at The Peabody Institute, Jay attended The Berklee School of Music and The Advanced School of Contemporary Music in Toronto, before leaving school to start touring with the traveling big bands of the late 50's and early 60's. Upon moving to New York, Jay eventually began playing for many of the great jazz musicians, big bands, and singers who were to be found in New York - artists like Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Tony Bennett, Marian McPartland, and Jim Hall. Jay has now recorded 15 solo albums. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: NICHOLAS PAYTON AND ACTION AFFIRMATIVE

Nicholas Payton and Action Affirmative with Aaron Parks, Vicente Archer and Bill Stewart will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, January 20th through 25th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Since 1994 when Nicholas Payton made his recording debut as a leader with "From This Moment," the trumpeter has been lauded as one of the leading young instrumental voices in jazz. Even though he started out as a "young lion," one of the new generation guardians of the swing and bebop flames, the 40-year-old Payton has devoted himself to discovering sounds outside of strict traditional confines. Having grown up in a family and community of musicians in New Orleans, Payton has built his unique voice by melding a post-bop foundation, a heavy emphasis on groove, a soulful history and various experimental elements. Payton's new ensemble "Action Affirmative" is a return of sorts - to the fiery postbox of "Nick@Night" (Verve Records, 2000) for which he has received much acclaimed - but with a new lineup of stellar collaborators. NYC: MONTY ALEXANDER HARLEM KINGSTON EXPRESS 2

Monty Alexander Harlem Kingston Express 2 with Ernest Ranglin & Chronixx perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Saturday & Sunday, January 25th & 26th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The Harlem-Kingston Express project combines two groups into one, seamlessly blending rocking reggae music with classic, acoustic jazz. Guitarist Ernest Ranglin's sound defines the Jamaican sound for a generation of musicians. He has worked with Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, The Skatalites, and numerous other legendary reggae musicians. In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. In the process, he has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe: Frank Sinatra, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare, among many others. Nick Kellie will perform at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Friday & Saturday, January 24th & 25th with shows at 8:30 & 10:30 pm. Nick currently resides in New York City, where he plays with many local musicians and also teaches guitar. Nick is currently the guitarist with The Three Degrees (#1 hit "When will I see you again") and just toured the UK with them for 25 dates. Nick was awarded the BBC Big Band Jazz awards "John Dankworth trophy for outstanding young soloist" and recorded a special show for BBC radio 2. He was invited to become a member of the Wigan Jazz Orchestra, and has played as part of the Wigan International Jazz Festival. He has played extensive gigs which include accompaniment, reading, soloing as well as styles ranging from Soul, R&B, Blues, Rock and Jazz in locations such as London, Norway, Germany and Greece. When living in London, England, Nick was involved in many projects such as Fresh Claim, which features Nick on guitar, and Jon Plotel on Bass (Billy Ocean, The Real Thing) and Vanessa Haynes band featuring members of Jeff Beck group, Eric Clapton's Band and Allan Holdsworth's Band. The Benny Golson Quartet (Benny Golson, saxophone; Mike LeDonne, piano; Buster Williams, bass; Carl Allen, drums) will perform atDIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, January 24th through 26th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Born in 1929, saxophonist Benny Golson came up through the bands of Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey, and others. By the late 1950s, he and Art Farmer co-led the essential group The Jazztet. Many of Golson's compositions have become timeless standards, such as "I Remember Clifford" and "Stablemates," and he has maintained this high quality and reputation throughout his career as a leader in straight-ahead jazz. Golson now leads an all-star quartet, whose "stories from the past" continue to resonate with audiences today as they have throughout the greater part of the last century. There is a $40-$45 cover.

Emanuele Tozzi, Composer-Pianist-Filmmaker, will perform his show "Italian Souvenir" atTHE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Saturday, January 25th at 9:30 pm. He is joined by Jason Vitelli on alto sax/guitar and Courtney Bennett on drums. Tozzi was born in Italy and is currently living in NYC. His passion for music and film started spontaneously, almost instinctively, at the age of seven. After extensive study throughout his childhood, he continued his musical education during college at Milano's School of Jazz while at he same time earning a law degree. Emanuele has played extensively throughout Italy in addition to Houston, Aspen, Los Angeles, Kiev, Tel Aviv, and jazz clubs all over New York City. He has performed for Pope John Paul II, Bill Clinton, Colin Powel, and several Italian luminaries. The Road of Dreams and Italian Souvenir, his two CDs, are currently available on iTunes. In addition to music, he has directed several award-winning short movies with his brother Lorenzo Tozzi. Maud Hixson will perform her show 'Jazz Above Zero' at PILAR'S (146 West Plant Street, Winter Garden, FL - 407-369-8900) on Saturday, January 25th at 8:00 pm. She is joined by Rick Carlson and Kid Dutch. Maud Hixson is a singer of classic jazz and popular songs of the 20th century, based in Saint Paul, MN. She became a full-time musician after being presented as "Best New Voice" at the KBEM Winter Jazz Fest in Minneapolis in 2003, and now works with a variety of musicians, including the continental sextet French 75, which she founded with clarinetist Tony Balluff. She made her Guthrie Theater debut in "Coward's Women" in 2010 with singer Erin Schwab, performed at the New York Cabaret Convention in 2011 at Lincoln Center's Rose Hall, and in 2012 appeared in concert with the late composer and pianist Richard Rodney Bennett. The first album devoted to the music of Broadway composer Michael Leonard, with arrangements by pianist Tex Arnold, the CD also features bassist Steve LaSpina, cornetist Warren Vach•, and guitarist Gene Bertoncini. Scott is a natural. Only 29, the trumpeter has both the tone and the conviction of the great players of his instrument. He eschews cliche and gimmickry in favor of an expressive sensibility and a willingness to break rules when it makes musical sense to him. A New Orleans native, Scott represents the next generation of Crescent City horn blowers whose lineage started with the legendary King Oliver and Louis Armstrong and has continued with such marquee trumpeters as Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton.

Percussionist Sammy Figueroa is considered one of the world's great musicians. In a career spanning over thirty years he has played with Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, the Brecker Brothers, Mariah Carey, David Bowie, John McLaughlin, Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera, Chaka Khan, Blues Traveler, Ashford and Simpson, Natalie Merchant and countless others. He has also co-produced several albums, most notably the Cuban a cappella group Vocal Sampling. His band, Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion, is one of the most exciting in jazz today. Known for their exciting performances, enhanced by Sammy's ebullient humor , the band has recorded two albums, 'And Sammy Walked In', and 'The Magician', both nominated for the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. NYC: NICHOLAS PAYTON AND ACTION AFFIRMATIVE

Nicholas Payton and Action Affirmative with Aaron Parks, Vicente Archer and Bill Stewart will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, January 20th through 25th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Since 1994 when Nicholas Payton made his recording debut as a leader with "From This Moment," the trumpeter has been lauded as one of the leading young instrumental voices in jazz. Even though he started out as a "young lion," one of the new generation guardians of the swing and bebop flames, the 40-year-old Payton has devoted himself to discovering sounds outside of strict traditional confines. Having grown up in a family and community of musicians in New Orleans, Payton has built his unique voice by melding a post-bop foundation, a heavy emphasis on groove, a soulful history and various experimental elements. Payton's new ensemble "Action Affirmative" is a return of sorts - to the fiery postbox of "Nick@Night" (Verve Records, 2000) for which he has received much acclaimed - but with a new lineup of stellar collaborators. The Monty Alexander Trio, with Monty Alexander, piano; John Clayton, bass; and Jeff Hamtilon, drums, performs atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Wednesday through Friday, January 22nd through 24th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. This combination of Monty Alexander, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton is one of the most legendary trios in all of jazz. They have worked together for over 40 years and have released many albums together, the most famous being "Live In Montreux," one of the most celebrated jazz piano trio records of all-time. NYC: NICK KELLIE AT THE IRIDIUM

Nick Kellie will perform at THE IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Friday & Saturday, January 24th & 25th with shows at 8:30 & 10:30 pm. Nick currently resides in New York City, where he plays with many local musicians and also teaches guitar. Nick is currently the guitarist with The Three Degrees (#1 hit "When will I see you again") and just toured the UK with them for 25 dates. Nick was awarded the BBC Big Band Jazz awards "John Dankworth trophy for outstanding young soloist" and recorded a special show for BBC radio 2. He was invited to become a member of the Wigan Jazz Orchestra, and has played as part of the Wigan International Jazz Festival. He has played extensive gigs which include accompaniment, reading, soloing as well as styles ranging from Soul, R&B, Blues, Rock and Jazz in locations such as London, Norway, Germany and Greece. When living in London, England, Nick was involved in many projects such as Fresh Claim, which features Nick on guitar, and Jon Plotel on Bass (Billy Ocean, The Real Thing) and Vanessa Haynes band featuring members of Jeff Beck group, Eric Clapton's Band and Allan Holdsworth's Band. The Benny Golson Quartet (Benny Golson, saxophone; Mike LeDonne, piano; Buster Williams, bass; Carl Allen, drums) will perform atDIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, January 24th through 26th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Born in 1929, saxophonist Benny Golson came up through the bands of Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Art Blakey, and others. By the late 1950s, he and Art Farmer co-led the essential group The Jazztet. Many of Golson's compositions have become timeless standards, such as "I Remember Clifford" and "Stablemates," and he has maintained this high quality and reputation throughout his career as a leader in straight-ahead jazz. Golson now leads an all-star quartet, whose "stories from the past" continue to resonate with audiences today as they have throughout the greater part of the last century. NYC: WEST SIDE 5 VOCAL GROUP AT THE MET

West Side 5, an award-winning vocal jazz ensemble based in New York City, will perform at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Friday, January 24th at 7:00 pm. West Side 5 is known for its refined sound and sophisticated approach to jazz. Inspired by greats like Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, and The Real Group, WS5 has crafted its own unique sound, characterized by highly original arrangements, complex harmonies, and outstanding musicianship. Group members include: Corrine Byrne, Soprano; Sara Wajnberg, Alto; John Shumway, Tenor; Eric Hughes, Baritone; and David McIntosh, Bass. The group formed in the summer of 2009, bringing together five old college friends on the west side of Manhattan. They immediately gained national attention, winning the Mid-Atlantic Harmony Sweepstakes while being voted Audience Favorite and winning Best Arrangement for "Pure Imagination". They went on to be featured artists at the SingStrong A Cappella Festival, and have performed alongside groups including Blue Jupiter, Streetcorner Symphony, and The Bobs, as well as for Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion in New York. Cynthia brings her show "For Real ... 2.0" to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Friday, January 24th at 9:30 pm. The show is musically directed by Fran Minarik and directed and co-written by James Horvath. Cynthia has been a recording artist and musical theater singer since the age of seven after being chosen for the final call back for the starring role in the movie Annie. She has lived in Manhattan since receiving her BFA at NYU and has made a career out of performing off-broadway and in Europe and Mexico City with such notables as Hal Prince's Director's Co., and James Hammerstein III. Cynthia has gone back and forth from theater to the music business to work with artists such as Stevie Nicks and the record producer Don Was (Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan). She has built a strong career in commercial voiceovers in English and Spanish and is well known for her role of "Catalina", the Puerto Rican gangster in Grand Theft Auto 3 and San Andreas, for any gamers out there! Inspired by Herman Hesse's timeless novel, the musical tells the story of Prince Siddhartha's spiritual quest for enlightenment with a sizzling, Italian and South Asian-influenced pop-rock score that features raw, sexy performances. This adaptation of one of the world's most iconic emotional journeys will delight fans of the novel, and audiences who appreciate the unique transformative power of musical theatre. Written and directed by Isabeau with music by Isabella Biffi and Fabio Codega, the show was originally developed in the Italian prison system.
