CHI: LAURA FREEMAN IN IT'S MY PARTY AT DAVENPORT'S

CHI: LAURA FREEMAN IN IT'S MY PARTY AT DAVENPORT'S

Laura Freeman celebrates the sounds of the 60s in her show "It's My Party" at DAVENPORT'S (1383 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-278-1830) on Saturdays, May 12th, 19th & 26th at 8:00 pm. Martha and The Vandellas in 1964 and Connie Francis, The Top Female Vocalist of The 50s ... those are the bookends. When we talk about music from the 1960s, most people think of Bob Dylan, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, but that is really just part of the story! That small window of about 8 years changed music forever with the birth of a genre most historians don't even acknowledge: the birth of Bubble Gum Pop. Suddenly the air waves were jumping with the sound of women ... no ... girls, teenage girls and their teenage girl problems. Call for cover/minimum information.

NYC: GREGG MARX SINGS "MUSIC & LYRICS BY COLE PORTER"

NYC: GREGG MARX SINGS "MUSIC & LYRICS BY COLE PORTER"

Gregg Marx, a popular L.A. based crooner, voice-over artist and former soap star will make his first New York City cabaret appearance since 2005 on at the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Monday, May 21st at 9:30 pm & Tuesday, May 22nd at 7:00 pm. His show, "Music & Lyrics by Cole Porter" brings with it a uniquely personal edge. A little known piece of show business history connects Gregg Marx, the famous Marx Brothers, Salvador Dali and Cole Porter; and it's a lot closer than the popular parlor game of six degrees of separation. Gregg, the grandson of Gummo Marx, one of the legendary five Marx Brothers, discovered that Salvador Dali was an avid Marx Brothers fan in the 1930's. Dali was so inspired by his idols that he was developing a film project for them with music by none other than his friend, Cole Porter. Dali wrote the treatment and was going to direct it and design the sets. Not surprisingly, the concept was deemed too "surreal" by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and "not funny" by Groucho. Though the project never came to fruition, it inspired Gregg Marx to return to the ever-popular songs of the inimitable Mr. Porter in this critically lauded show, directed by the multi-talented Kirby Tepper and performed recently at Catalina Jazz in Los Angeles among other venues. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: LORINDA LISITZA BRINGS "TRIUMPHANT BABY!" BACK TO THE MET - FINAL SHOW

NYC: LORINDA LISITZA BRINGS "TRIUMPHANT BABY!" BACK TO THE MET

Lorinda Lisitza brings back her nightclub act, "Triumphant Baby! The Songs of Iconis and Maddock," to the THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) with one more performance on Sunday, May 20th at 7:00 pm. Mixing dreams of Hollywood glamour with stark snapshots of America gone bust (and bananas), Lisitza delivers a fiery gamut of songs from the minds of hillbillies, housewives, murderesses, doomed startlets and other assorted tuneful lunatics. With her precocious songwriting collaborators, Joe Iconis and Robert Maddock, the MAC, Bistro and Nightlife Award-winning singer stirs up a mythological stew that is as sweet as it is corrosive. "Triumphant Baby!" developed with the director Brad Oscar, premiered in the Metropolitan Room in December 2006, winning both Nightlife and Bistro Awards, and going on to play a limited theatrical run at the York Theatre. This is the show's first major (and non-elusive) cabaret run. Joining Lisitza are Iconis (the music director) on piano, Mike Pettry on guitar, and Matt Wigton on bass. Liz Lark Brown and Tanya Holt do back-up vocals. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
