SAN FRANCISCO, CA: WAKE UP MADAGASCAR 2 AT YOSHI'S

'Wake Up Madagascar 2' will be performed at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Saturday, July 19th at 8:00 pm. Singer, songwriter and environmental activist Razia Said spent her childhood in the vanilla-growing region of Madagascar's northeast coast. After years of living abroad, she returned to discover her country's landscape ravaged by illegal logging, slash and burn agriculture and the impact of climate change. In an effort to raise awareness at the local and international level, Razia organized the Mifohaza Masoala (Wake Up Masoala) music/environmental festival, which took place at the edge of the Masoala Rainforest in October 2011. Before the concert local inhabitants planted a total of 20,000 trees. The concert featured some of Madagascar's most exciting performers, and the festival was a huge success. The participants agreed that the next step was to take the music and the message to the world. Last year The Wake Up Madagascar tour showcased the same outstanding musicians and dancers who create an uplifting celebration of Malagasy music. They toured US and Canada to great critical success. This year they are back with the music that makes Madagascar dance with its heart pounding rhythms, rippling guitars, lush vocal harmonies, bouncy accordion and hip-shaking dance moves. This music represents the soul and spirit of the island. Open Dance Floor. There is a $30 cover.

MANHATTAN: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, June 14th, 21st & 28th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

Bassist/composer and Connecticut native Ben Allison has developed his own instantly identifiable sound. Known for his inspired arrangements, inventive grooves and hummable melodies, Ben draws from the jazz tradition and a range of influences from rock and folk to 20th century classical and world music traditions, seamlessly blending them into a cinematic, cohesive whole. In addition to his acclaimed groups, "Man Size Safe," "Peace Pipe," and "Medicine Wheel," Ben has collaborated with a wide variety of artists including Mamadou Diabate, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Joey Arias, tap dancers Jimmy Slide and Gregory Hines, and US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. The band features Poncho Sanchez - Congas, David Torres - Piano, Tony Banda - Bass, Francisco Torres - Trombone, George Ortiz - Timbales, Ron Blake - Trumpet, Javier Vergara - Saxophone, and Joey De Leon - Bongos. If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez's music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling. There is a $20-$35 cover.

As the ex, Susan Cicarelli-Caputo, a fixture at the former NYSTI and Capital Rep, brings her years of theater experience to play against type as a sometimes bitter woman struggling with her own inability to separate from the man she has divorced. The former girl friend, played by Heather-Liz Copps, who sang opposite Gretzinger last year in the Not-So-Common Players' Music Man, observes from a distance as Jerry Jerome gives his ego needed strokes by hitting on the new girl in the backup group, played by Gretzinger's real-life fiancee, Erin Weaver. Women in My Life, the creation of Fort Salem's artistic director, Jay Kerr, contains serious autobiographical overtones. Call for cover/minimum information.  CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE MEMBER EVENT
