FLORIDA: PAULO SZOT RETURNS TO THE ROYAL ROOM

Paulo Szot returns to THE ROYAL ROOM at THE COLONY HOTEL (155 Hammond Avenue, Palm Beach, FL - 561-659-8100) on Tuesday through Saturday, March 4th through 8th at 8:30 pm with a late show in Friday & Saturday at 10:30 pm. Born and raised in Brazil, Paulo Szot made his opera debut 1997 and has appeared with many major opera companies throughout the world before starring in the Broadway revival of South Pacific at Lincoln Center Theatre, earning him the Tony Award, the Drama Desk, the Outer Critic's Circle and the Theater World Awards for his portrayal of Emile De Beque. In the 2008-2009 season Mr. Szot made his New York Philharmonic debut in a concert conducted by Marvin Hamlisch appearing alongside Liza Minnelli. After making his highly acclaimed Metropolitan Opera debut, he also made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops Orchestra. Mr. Szot has performed in the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center as part of the American Songbook Series and, in 2010 and 2011, at the Cafe Carlyle in New York. INDIANAPOLIS: STEPHANIE J. BLOCK RETURNS TO THE CABARET!

Tony nominated, Stephanie J. Block returns THE CABARET AT THE COLUMBIA CLUB(121 Monument Circle, Indianapolis, IN - 317-275-1169) on Friday & Saturday, March 7th & 8th at 8:00 pm. Stephanie has established herself as one of the most relevant and versatile voices in contemporary musical theatre. She stared on Broadway in Wicked, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Anything Goes, 9 To 5: The Musical, The Pirate Queen and The Boy From Oz (opposite Hugh Jackman). Most recently, Stephanie starred in the Off-Broadway musical Little Miss Sunshine•based off of the Oscar-nominated film. ST. LOUIS: CONNIE FAIRCHILD AT THE GASLIGHT CABARET FESTIVAL

Saturday, March 8th: Connie Fairchild makes her cabaret debut in a show entitled Down By The River. Connie was mesmerized by the rhythms of the rivers that surrounded her home towns. Growing up in Kentucky on the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers, in Louisiana on the Mississippi, and then following the river up to St. Louis, her voice was chiseled from other voices she listened to from these lush environments, such as Irma Thomas and Rosemary Clooney. As the lead singer of Fairchild, one of the most popular bands ever to call St. Louis home, Connie Fairchild was recognized by the RFT as Best Female Vocalist several times. LOS ANGELES: J. MICHAEL O'NEAL AT THE GARDENIA

J. Michael O'Neal will perform at THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on Friday & Saturday, March 7th & 8th at 9:00 pm. A professor in the California State University system who has taught courses in African American Music, Literature, and Performance, as well as History of Rock, History of Jazz, and History of Hip-Hop, Mr. O'Neal holds a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance, has studied with jazz greats from Bill Cunliffe to Grammy Award winner Ottmaro Ruiz, and has been Musical Director for events ranging from the Miss Black California Pageant to the Golden Globes, where he played keyboards with performances by Prince, Justin Timberlake, Adam Levine, Herbie Hancock, and Joni Mitchell. He has received awards at jazz festivals in Berkeley and in Reno, was a guest speaker at the Zambian National Music Conference, and has played for Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr., as well as Melissa Manchester, Ruben Studdard, Peabo Bryson, and Cece Winans. He brings some "old friends" to The Gardenia: Aretha Scruggs on vocals, Sekou Bunch and Juan Nelson on bass, Donald Barrett on drums, and James Davis on guitar. SAN FRANCISCO: PAULA WEST IN EXTENDED RUN AT YOSHI'S

San Francisco based jazz vocalist Paula West will perform at FEINSTEIN'S AT THE NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 866-663-1063) in a 4-week engagement opening on Thursday, February 13th, with shows running Thursday through Sunday, through March 9th. Known for her rich, powerful contralto voice, West will present an all-new show featuring an eclectic range of songs - from memorable jazz standards by Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart, to contemporary American classics by Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Accompanied by her four-piece band, West will take San Francisco audiences on a musical journey through the ages. Born into a Marine Corps family in San Diego, California, Paula West was initially exposed to classical music. It wasn't until college that West began listening to jazz singers such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn. After college, West moved to San Francisco, unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. Buying old records from thrift shops, she studied them and then began singing classes. As she became more secure in her talent, she ventured into jam sessions, places where an open mike gave her a chance to perform before an audience. It was at one of these sessions that she met a pianist who would join her in the climb to her own musical identity and her musical success. His name was Ken Muir, and he continues as her accompanist today. West went on to study with Faith Winthrop, developing her unique tone and delivery. She learned how to sustain a note without a vibrato, which is now almost a Paula West trademark. Tickets are $35-$50 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.

Singer and songwriter Chante Moore's voice, stunning beauty and unerring artistic vision have afforded the Gold-selling R&B singer to enjoy an illustrious two-decade career that is rare in this business. CAPE COD: "WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW - A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO BURT BACHARACH"

COTUIT CENTER FOR THE ARTS (4404 Route 28, Cotuit, MA - 508-428-0669) presents "What the World Needs Now - A Musical Tribute to Burt Bacharach" on Fridays & Saturdays at 7:00 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm, March 7th through 16th. The musical revue has been a lifelong dream for Ruth Condon who is producing, directing, and performing in the show along with Sarah Swain, Cerise Bynoe, Emily Wade Adams, Anthony Teixeira, and Tom Tracy. Condon appreciates the music, the harmonies, the varied time signatures and the difficulty of singing Bacharach's songs. The show will feature 29 songs written between 1958 and 1995, including "Walk on By," "Wishin' and Hopin,'" Alfie," "Heartlight," and "This House is Empty Now," a collaboration with Elvis Costello. The show will also feature anecdotes and short vignettes, including projected images and video. Pianist Mike Garvan will lead the band, which includes George Machon on trumpet, flute, fluglehorn and percussion, Steve Silverstein on drums, Tad Price on electric & nylon string guitar and Ron Ormsby on upright and electric bass. BOSTON: 'FOUR GENERATIONS OF MILES DAVIS'

'Four Generations of Miles Davis' will be presented atTHE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Friday & Saturday, March 7th & 8th with shows at 7:30 & 10:00 pm. The show features Jimmy Cobb, drums; Mike Stern, guitar; Buster Williams, bass and Sonny Fortune, sax in a sans-trumpet tribute to Miles Davis. In a career that spans three decades and a discography that includes more than a dozen eclectic and innovative recordings, six-time GRAMMY nominee Mike Stern has established himself as one of the premier jazz and jazz-fusion guitarists and composers of his generation. When critics speak of Sonny Fortune, names like Coltrane, Cannonball, Davis, Young, Bechet, Hawkins and Parker are mentioned. Sonny Fortune embodies all of the finest qualities of those late, great musicians. Buster Williams is a prodigious bassist whose playing knows no limits. He was 20 years old when he first met jazz greats like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Tony Williams. Meeting them would later figure heavily into his future. A superb, mostly self-taught musician, drummer Jimmy Cobb is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis bands. Pop/Jazz/Blues artist Suede will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Saturday, March 8th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm to make her long overdue return to Scullers with Fred Boyle, pianist, Rich Hill, bass and Steve Langone, drums. Suede plays piano, trumpet and guitar but voice is her first instrument and entertaining is clearly her first love. She is a consummate entertainer and song stylist among the likes of Tony Bennett, Michael Buble, and co., with a little Chris Botti or Louis Armstrong tossed in too. She's one part Rat Pack, one part Rosie Clooney. Think classic pop/jazz. Think steamy blues with a sizzling trumpet. Think love songs that'll make you swoon. Think funny. TORONTO: GRANT STEWART AND THE BERNIE SENENSKY QUARTET

Grant Stewart and the Bernie Senensky Quartet (Grant Stewart - tenor saxophone, Bernie Senensky - piano, Neil Swainson - bass, Phil Stewart - drums) perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO(251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, March 7th through 9th at 9:00 pm. Since moving to New York City at the age of 19, Toronto-born Grant Stewart has studied with such masters as Donald Byrd, Barry Harris, and Joe Lovano, and performed with Curtis Fuller, Jon Hendricks, Clark Terry, Etta Jones, Bill Charlap, Frank Gant, Dan Barret, Bob Mover, Brad Mehldau, Russell Malone, Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein, Jimmy Cobb, Harry Connick, Mickey Roker, Arthur Harper, Jimmy Lovelace, Cecil Payne, Dick Hyman, Herb Geller and was a member of the last Al Grey Sextet. TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: LIAM STANLEY

Liam Stanley, a young jazz guitarist from Toronto, Ontario, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Friday & Saturday, March 7th & 8th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist Series. Liam has been playing guitar for nearly a decade, having studied jazz with Humber alumni Tristan Clark, and York professors Roy Patterson and Lorne Lofsky. Liam is currently in his fifth year at York University. While at York Liam has had the privilege of studying with Kevin Turcotte, Kelly Jefferson and Barry Elmes. Following his third year at York Liam was nominated for the Mary Alice Stuart/JAZZ .FM91 Scholarship. Liam has been heard numerous times on JazzFM 91.1's Jazzology and will be featured in 2014. In October of 2011 Liam performed Tim Brady's Twenty Quarter Inch Jacks during the X Avant Festival in Toronto in a 20 guitar ensemble alongside Ted Quinlan and Roy Patterson. In the summer of 2012 Liam performed with his trio at the Brantford Jazz Festival, and followed it up in 2013 with a performance at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival with the Jon Foster Group. Lee Ritenour will perform atBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, March 6th through 9th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. It's been a long road since the seventies, when Ritenour's legendary Tuesday night appearances at the famed Baked Potato became part of the D.C. musical landscape for five years. MANHATTAN: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, February 8th, 15th & 22nd at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. MANHATTAN: BILLY HART QUARTET "ONE IS THE OTHER" CD RELEASE

The Billy Hart Quartet (Billy Hart, drums with Ethan Iverson on piano, Mark Turner on sax & Ben Street on bass) will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, March 4th through 8th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Legendary drummer Billy Hart has been a fixture on the jazz scene for over fifty years, performing and recording along the way with jazz legends Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz and Miles Davis. At Birdland Hart celebrates the release of the first ECM recording of the quartet formed in 2003. Since the group's 2005 CD for hard-bop label High Note landed on many critics' best-of-the year lists, the ensemble's music has gotten more free and spacious. All of the members contribute material including a modern blues, a Coltrane tribute and an Iverson-penned homage to Paul Bley, the wonderfully-titled "Nostalgia for the Impossible.". MANHATTAN: DONALD HARRISON, RON CARTER, BILLY COBHAM TRIO

The hard-swinging trio of Donald Harrison (sax), Ron Carter (bass), and Billy Cobham (drums) will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, March 4th through 9th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The trio first demonstrated its strong chemistry and affinity for standards on its 2004 recording, Heroes. In April 2005, Half Note Records captured the trio live during a week-long series of shows at the Blue Note, producing the album New York Cool (2005). Half Note again recorded the trio in action at the club last year, releasing the album This is Jazz near the end of 2011. This week at the Blue Note, the band looks build on last year's musical achievements with another hotly-anticipated residency.

MANHATTAN: ELIANE ELIAS AT DIZZY'S CLUB

Pianist, singer, and songwriter Eliane Elias performs atDIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday through Sunday, March 5th through 9th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. She is joined by Steve Cardenas, guitar; Marc Johnson, bass; and Rafael Barata, drums. Elias blends her Brazilian roots with a sensuous, alluring voice and piano style to create a distinctive sound that has won her scores of fans. With five GRAMMY Award nominations and multiple recordings that have achieved "top five" spots on Billboard and other charts, Elias is recognized for her talent by both peers and fans. MANHATTAN: THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND

After sold out runs in 2009 & 2010, Thank You For Being A Friend returns to THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) for its third limited-run engagement. Performances are Saturday, March 18th at 8:00 pm; Friday, February 14th at 10:00 pm. This unauthorized musical parody inspired by the beloved TV sitcom "The Golden Girls," features book by Nick Brennan, music by Jeff Thomson, and lyrics by Luke Jones and Cisco Cardenas. In the show four women over 60 (Blanchette, the varicose-veined vixen; Dorthea, the brainy ball-buster; Roz, the lovable airhead; and Sophie, the wisecracking spitfire) are spending their golden years together in a wicker-filled bungalow in Miami. But when gay pop superstar Ricky Martin moves next door, his loud outdoor sex parties keep the quartet of cheesecake-loving retirees awake. Raven O, a deep downtown entertainment fixture for decades, will sneak across the border (14th street) for his next performance on the cabaret circuit. So far fans have not had a hard time finding the former MC/star of "The Box". He packed Joe's Pub on October 23rd for his first appearance since returning to NYC after gigs in London and Las Vegas. His show at The Duplex on January 31st sold out days in advance. The Sinatra show has Raven O wearing a suit and a Sinatra-esque Fedora, a far cry from his normal look which usually involved the least amount of clothing possible. Raven emphasises that this will not be an impersonation show but his own take on Sinatra hits. Following her sold-out crowds last June, Judy Carmichael returns to THE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL (20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888) on Friday & Saturday, March 7th & 8th at 10:30 pm at part of the clubs Late Night series. Judy will present her show 'Old Fashioned Love', celebrating the music of Fats Waller, Cole Porter, Benny Goodman and other masters of the swing era. On Friday, she is joined by guitarist Martin Wheatley and on Saturday by guitarist Colin Oxley. Not many contemporary jazz pianists can boast a nickname given to them by the great Count Basie, but Grammy nominee Judy Carmichael can. When Basie heard Judy, on one of her first gigs, he was so impressed he dubbed her "Stride" in reference to her mastery of that early piano style popularized by Thomas "Fats" Waller and James P. Legendary hip-hop trio De La Soul will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600 - ) on Friday, March 7th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. At the time of its 1989 release, De La Soul's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as the future of hip-hop. With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip hop. Where most of their contemporaries drew directly from old-school rap, funk, or Public Enemy's dense sonic barrage, De La Soul were gentler and more eclectic, taking in not only funk and soul, but also pop, jazz, reggae, and psychedelia. Though their style initially earned both critical raves and strong sales, De La Soul found it hard to sustain their commercial momentum in the '90s as their alternative rap was sidetracked by the popularity of considerably harder-edged gangsta rap. De La Soul formed while the trio - Posdnuos (born Kelvin Mercer, August 17, 1969), Trugoy the Dove (born David Jude Jolicoeur, September 21, 1968), and Pasemaster Mase (born Vincent Mason, March 27, 1970) - were attending high school in the late '80s. The stage names of all of the members derived from in-jokes: Posdnuos was an inversion of Mercer's DJ name, Sound-Sop; Trugoy was an inversion of Jolicoeur's favorite food, yogurt. De La Soul's demo tape, "Plug Tunin'," came to the attention of Prince Paul, the leader and producer of the New York rap outfit Stetsasonic. Prince Paul played the tape to several colleagues and helped the trio land a contract with Tommy Boy Records. There is a $46 cover.

The show features Jimmy Cobb, drums; Mike Stern, guitar; Buster Williams, bass and Sonny Fortune, sax in a sans-trumpet tribute to Miles Davis. In a career that spans three decades and a discography that includes more than a dozen eclectic and innovative recordings, six-time GRAMMY nominee Mike Stern has established himself as one of the premier jazz and jazz-fusion guitarists and composers of his generation. When critics speak of Sonny Fortune, names like Coltrane, Cannonball, Davis, Young, Bechet, Hawkins and Parker are mentioned. Sonny Fortune embodies all of the finest qualities of those late, great musicians. Buster Williams is a prodigious bassist whose playing knows no limits. He was 20 years old when he first met jazz greats like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Tony Williams. Meeting them would later figure heavily into his future. A superb, mostly self-taught musician, drummer Jimmy Cobb is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis bands. Jimmy's inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co. spanned 1957 until 1963, and included the masterpiece Kind of Blue, the most popular jazz recording in history. Since moving to New York City at the age of 19, Toronto-born Grant Stewart has studied with such masters as Donald Byrd, Barry Harris, and Joe Lovano, and performed with Curtis Fuller, Jon Hendricks, Clark Terry, Etta Jones, Bill Charlap, Frank Gant, Dan Barret, Bob Mover, Brad Mehldau, Russell Malone, Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein, Jimmy Cobb, Harry Connick, Mickey Roker, Arthur Harper, Jimmy Lovelace, Cecil Payne, Dick Hyman, Herb Geller and was a member of the last Al Grey Sextet.
