TONIGHT - LAST CHANCE! NYC: TOMASZ STANKO NEW YORK QUARTET AT BIRDLAND

NYC: TOMASZ STANKO NEW YORK QUARTET AT BIRDLAND
CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

The Tomasz Stanko New York Quartet - Tomasz Stanko (trumpet), David Virelles (piano), Thomas Morgan (bass), Gerald Cleaver (drums) - will appear at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) Thursday through Saturday, March 28th through 30th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm with "Wislawa" ECM Records CD Release Celebration. Like his early hero Miles Davis, Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko has a gift for shaping great bands, and this one, formed in the world's jazz capital, overflows with promise. The bass and drums team of Thomas Morgan and Gerald Cleaver is one of the most sensitive in contemporary improvising, and Cuban-born pianist David Virelles, inspired by ritual music as well as by Thelonious Monk and Andrew Hill, seems particularly well-attuned to the brooding darkness and sophisticated dread of Stanko's free ballads. In the uptempo pieces all four players seem to enter new territory, with very exciting results. The double album program of new Stanko compositions is inspired also by the poetry of Wislawa Symborska, the Polish poet, essayist and Nobel Laureate, who died in 2012. As Stanko writes in the CD booklet, "Reading Wislawa Szymborska's words gave me many ideas and insights. Meeting her and interacting with her poetry also gave impetus to this music, which I would like to dedicate, respectfully, to her memory." There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

TONIGHT NYC: TOMASZ STANKO NEW YORK QUARTET AT BIRDLAND

NYC: DEBBY BOONE DEBUTS AT THE CAFE CARLYLE
CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum selling vocalist Debby Boone will make her debut at the legendary THE CAFE CARLYLE (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600) on Thuesdays through Saturdays, March 19th through 30th at 8:45 pm (no performance on Friday, March 29th) with her new show "Swing This," featuring a nine piece band. Based on her upcoming CD, "Swing This" is her take on Las Vegas in the 60s with stories and memories to share from the years her father Pat Boone was headlining at the Sands and Sahara hotels. "Swing This" is a true reflection of the music, glamour and pure exhilaration of that golden age in Vegas that inspired her to be a performer in the first place. The personal stories, fabulous clothes and exciting arrangements by Debby's musical director, John Oddo, played by a group of fantastic musicians all make up, in Debby's own words, "The party I've been waiting for my whole life to throw! The show features standards such as "That Old Black Magic" "Cry Me A River" and "More Than You Know," in addition to pop hits such as "These Boots Are Made for Walking" and "Everybody Loves Somebody." A special EP preview of the upcoming full-length album will be available for purchase at the venue. There is a $45-$65-$115 cover Tues-Thurs; $50-$75-$125 cover Fri-Sat.

NYC: CLAIRE DALY QUARTET: "BARITONE MONK" CD RELEASE CELEBRATION

NYC: CLAIRE DALY QUARTET: "BARITONE MONK" CD RELEASE CELEBRATION
CELEBRATING MARCH IS CABARET MONTH

Baritone saxophonist Claire Daly will perform on Thursday, March 28th at 6:00 pm at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080). Claire will tell you that her life changed on Sept. 23rd, 1971, when as a very (very) young girl, playing saxophone for 3 months, she heard the Buddy Rich Band in concert. After attending the Berklee College of Music, she began an education of another kind - making a living as a musician. Her career has included anchoring the sax section in the Diva Big Band for 7 years and recording 5 CDs with brilliant, quirky composer/pianist Joel Forrester's "People Like Us." At Birdland, Daly celebrates the release of "Baritone Monk" with her Quartet. The CD is released by North Coast Brewing Company, makers of "Brother Thelonious Ale," which is dedicated to Thelonious Monk. 100% of the CD proceeds go to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
