DC: A WEEKEND WITH PHAROAH SANDERS AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS

DC: A WEEKEND WITH PHAROAH SANDERS AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS

BOHEMIAN CAVERNS(2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) presents Grammy Award winning Pharoah Sanders on Friday through Sunday, June 14th through 16th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Pharoah possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, Sanders' sound can be as raw and abrasive as it is possible for a saxophonist to produce. Yet, Sanders is highly regarded to the point of reverence by a great many jazz fans. Although he made his name with expressionistic, nearly anarchic free jazz in John Coltrane's late ensembles of the mid-'60s, Sanders' later music is guided by more graceful concerns. NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND AT 6:00 PM

NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND AT 6:00 PM

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

When Ben Rimalower was eight years old, his father came out of the closet and embarked on a drug-fueled tear that left his family in tatters. 20th Century Girl: The Lois Morton Songbook will be performed at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - ) on Saturday, June 15th at 5:00 pm. After a long hiatus, which included raising a family, teaching, writing children's books and ESL textbooks, and directing a continuing education program at the YWCA, Lois returned to songwriting in 1996. At first, having retired to care for her husband who had Alzheimer's, she wrote to express her profound sorrow and loss. After a time, she rediscovered the funny side of life and currently focuses on humorous songs of social commentary in Gilbert & Sullivan/Tom Lehrer style. Lois' multicultural repertoire includes songs in several languages, with a special emphasis on French and the songs of Edith Piaf. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

LONDON CABARET: JUDY CARMICHAEL WITH COLIN OXLEY AT CRAZY COQS - CLOSES TONIGHT

LONDON CABARET: JUDY CARMICHAEL WITH COLIN OXLEY AT CRAZY COQS - CLOSES TONIGHT

Judy Carmichael performs atTHE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL (20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888) Tuesday through Saturday, June 11th through 15th at 8:00 pm. The jazz legend Count Basie used to call her "Stride," and her early supporters included the likes of Sarah Vaughan and Benny Carter. Judy Carmichael has established herself as an unlikely, but thoroughly authentic practitioner of early jazz piano styles in general and stride piano in particular. Highly acclaimed jazz guitarist Colin Oxley performs with Carmichael on guitar. Carmichael's show HIGH ON FATS AND OTHER STUFF features swingin' music, sultry vocals and lots of humour with the music of Fats Waller, Hoagy Carmichael, Count Basie and other swing era greats. Judy Carmichael is one of a handful of musicians who approaches jazz from a perspective of its entire history. Choosing to study jazz piano from its early roots on, she explores the music deeply, infusing it with a "fresh, dynamic interpretation of her own" (Washington Post). She has played in a variety of venues from Carnegie Hall, to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice (the first concert ever presented by the museum) to programmes with Joel Grey, Michael Feinstein, Steve Ross and the Smothers Brothers. In addition, Carmichael has done comic skits and performed her music on radio and TV and performed private recitals for everyone from Rod Stewart and Robert Redford to President Clinton and Gianni Agnelli. DC: A WEEKEND WITH PHAROAH SANDERS AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS THROUGH SUNDAY

NYC: A ROCK N' ROLL ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG - HISTORIC PERFORMANCE AT 54 BELOW TONIGHT ONLY

NYC: A ROCK N' ROLL ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG - HISTORIC PERFORMANCE AT 54 BELOW TONIGHT ONLY

On Friday, June 14th at 8:00 pm at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551 ), a Rock n' Roll archaeological dig will unfold, as singer/ songwriter/ producer/ drummer Rich Pagano, pianist/ vocalist/ songwriter Jeff Kazee and singer/ bassist John Conte join together as 'Early Elton' - The trio of respected artists will deliver a historic recreation/interpretation of Elton John's 'Tumbleweed Connection', in its entirety, based specifically on the album's 1971 live trio tour arrangements. No wigs, no costumes - just three great musicians performing the early music of a seminal artist. This is the only scheduled Early Elton performance of this classic record in its entirety. Elton John's studio/ recording budgets were substantial, but from 1970 to 1972 his touring budgets were small by comparison. As a result, he was forced to restructure the arrangements of his albums and tour as a trio, since he had no money for a full band. Pagano, Kazee and Conte painstakingly scoured the net for rare video, soundboard mixes, bootleg recordings and even Elton's own home demos in shaping their collective vision of Elton's Trio Period, they blur the line slightly between replication and innovation. No one has ever tackled the live trio tour arrangements in this way before. There is a $25-$35 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.
