French actress and singer Floanne Ankah recounts the Piaf story in recognition of the 50th anniversary of her death in the New York premiere of "Edith Piaf, Alive and Living in New York" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Saturday, March 17th at 9:30 pm. This authentic French chanteuse and farm girl opens the door to her culture, by taking a closer look at the legendary "Little Sparrow" with that husky, mournful voice so popular in the 1940's and 50's. The show is a medley of vintage tunes from Floanne's native France, with a modern twist. She will embody the legend, interpreting the melodies from her point of view as a child, imagining Piaf's characters coming to life. Floanne has been reviving the tradition of French Music Hall, performing her Chanson, as well as original compositions, with top jazz and cabaret artists. Piano: Audrey Saint-Gil, Accordion: Kate Dunphy, Guitar: Marcel Van Dam, Percussion: Mario Monaco. In 2011 Alice Ripley released Daily Practice, an album of 10 acoustic covers of classics from Bruce Springsteen to Carole King. On Saturday, March 17th at 7:00 pm, Alice will perform songs from the album at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), and adds two powerful elements: surprising versions of show tunes from musicals in which Alice created roles - and the return of her band RIPLEY. Now joined by Lauren Molina on cello and vocals, and Nick Cearley on noisemakers and vocals, the 6 piece band lets Alice turn full throttle rock star - all the while retaining the intimacy of the audience being in her living room as she does her daily practice. Suzanne Carrico serves as director with Tracy Stark as musical director, and Donna Kelly on drums and percussion. Peg's theatrical career began in Houston playing the role of Doc, one of the seven dwarves, in a children's production of Snow White. She went on to perform with TUTS, Houston Grand Opera, AD Players, North Shore Music Theatre, TheatreLAB and Turtle Lane Playhouse. Composer/lyricist Scott Evan Davis will appear with special guests for one show only at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Wednesday, March 14th at 8:00 pm. Davis will present the music from his recently released debut recording - Cautiously Optimistic: The Music of Scott Evan Davis (Sonic Landscapes Music). In addition to all the music from his recording, Davis is excited to introduce the opening number from an original, commissioned musical he's writing for PS 94's autistic children's program. The song is titled "If the World Only Knew." As he and producer/arranger David Snyder did for his album, Davis has assembled an exciting group of performers to interpret his songs at Don't Tell Mama. The evening's line-up includes: Sierra Rein, Joshua Dixon, Natalie Douglas, Erik Sisco, Erin Lindsey Krom, Nikki Van Cassele, William Blake, Nicole Johndrow, Vicky Modica and one more very special guest. Singer/songwriter/vocal coach Kenneth Gartman made his debut at the legendaryDON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 ) with 8 appearances over 5 months in 2011 and 2012, with his show "... not like the other cavemen". Now he returns for one more time on Tuesday, March 13th at 7:00 pm. In his show, Gartman reveals aspects of his life and personality delivering songs that alternate between joyful and introspective with some gospel coloring thrown in for good measure ... after all, he did grow up in Texas. Songstress Sandy Bainum returns to the New York cabaret stage to debut her newest show entitled Sandy Bainum: Something to Sing About at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Monday, March 12th at 7:00 pm. The performance is a celebration of positivity, featuring songs that are engaging, entertaining, and ultimately uplifting. The eclectic musical collection brilliantly weaves together the melodies of several decades and musical genres and features tunes by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Dorothy Fields, Stephen Sondheim, Irving Berlin, David Friedman, Randy Newman and John Sebastian. Joining Sandy is her award-winning musical director, Lanny Meyers. The new show, directed by Bruce Kimmel, will treat audiences to such varied fare as "Cockeyed Optimist" from South Pacific, "Lion Tamer" from The Magic Show, "Don't Rain on My Parade" from Funny Girl, "Pure Imagination" from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story, to name just a few. Ms. Bainum, a regular on the Washington, D.C. theatre scene, made her Broadway debut in David Merrick's legendary production of 42nd Street. Since moving to D.C. with her husband, the former Maryland State Senator, Stewart Bainum, Sandy has performed leading roles in many of Washington's top theatrical venues including the Kennedy Center, Washington Savoyards, the Signature Theatre and Ford's Theater, where she recently completed a run in Jason Robert Brown's Parade. Sandy made her introduction to the New York cabaret scene last year in Excuse My Dust, a cabaret show inspired by the life and writings of Mrs. Dorothy Parker, followed by Great Songs Seldom Heard, after a successful debut at Washington's Signature Theatre. CCP (Chicago Cabaret Professionals) presents: "Broadway on the Two's! - The Great Story Songs from 1930-2010" at DAVENPORT'S (1383 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL - 773-278-1830) on 4 Sundays in March, the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th, all shows at 7:00 pm. Over 30 talented singers will perform America's favorite Broadway hits from years that end in "2". From songs that became staples in the Great American Song Book from 1932, 42 & 52, to the Broadway classics that brought us stars like Barbra Streisand in 1962.
