The RRAZZ ROOM at THE HOTEL NIKKO(222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-394-1189) presents the Exclusive San Francisco Premiere Engagement of Cloris Leachman in "Cloris! A One Woman Show", Tuesday through Saturday, June 1st through 6th at 8:00 pm (7:00 pm on Sunday) plus an extended run on Saturday & Sunday, June 12th (8:00 pm) & 13th (7:00 pm). You can call 76-year-old Cloris Leachman the ultimate chameleon. She was the zany, self-centered Phyllis on the Mary Tyler Moore show, the hilarious Frau Blucher in Young Frankenstein, the conically breasted Nurse Diesel in High Anxiety, and the prejudiced grandmother in Malcolm In The Middle. Cloris showcased her gracious fluidity with Shakespeare's lines when she played opposite Katharine Hepburn on Broadway in As You Like It. Her success soared on Broadway as Nellie Forbush, the singing lead in South Pacific. Cloris' recent appearance on ABC TV's Dancing With The Stars was one of the highlights of the television season. She won her Oscar as Ruth Popper, the emotionally barren woman in The Last Picture Show. The Oscar sits regally on a shelf in Cloris' home alongside her nine Emmys, the most ever won by an actor. Cloris! A One Woman Show is everything you would expect from unique, multi-talented Cloris and more. Tickets are $40-$45.

THE SINGING EXPERIENCE in its 33rd season, (established 1977) was begun to give aspiring cabaret and musical theater performers the opportunity to explore their talents, conquer fear, and develop self-confidence by learning the "tools of the trade" through actually performing before audiences in a supportive and nurturing environment. THE SINGING EXPERIENCE has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning and in the NY Times! See the website for more information.

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II - BLOG EDITION

MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II

What's the old saying - if Mohammad doesn't want to go to the mountain, the mountain will go to Mohammad. Currently whenever we update the blog http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ (about 12 times a day) we send a notice to the 300 folks who follow us on TWITTER. Now we've opened an account on FaceBook so if you follow us there, you'll get the same notices. Now I have to figure out how folks get to follow CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE on FaceBook - the account is CABARET-HOTLINE-ONLINE (I think). I have to do some studying on how it all works. Check the blog (the MEMBERS ONLY issue tomorrow might have info - I don't even know at this point how to follow myself!).
Please note, you will still have to send us show information and press releases the "old fashioned way" by sending your info to stuhamstra@svhamstra.com - and the same goes with postings to the various group mailing lists I follow (BACA, MAC, CABARETSINGERS, CCP, LA-SINGER, etc.). Please, to be sure your item is seen and read, send it directly. These group mailings often contain incomplete and also non-cabaret items (apartment sublets, kittens to adopt, etc.) so I currently just scan them, saving only an occasional few for the newsletter.

A word about reviews: You may have noted a nearly complete lack of reviews in CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE issues lately. The reasons are several, the main one being a lack of time. But that's all about to change. It is now 9:00 am and I have completed all the listings I needed to include for today! That's 3 1/2 hours before publication time! So now I see I will have time to send a review (or at least a report) on shows seen during the last week in every Thursday issue.
There's a second reason: Very few people read the reviews! They read them in the newsletter (there's no way for me to tell, actually) and a few will go to the website to read reviews - mainly the performer and his/her friends. But, from my own website statistics, after a few days the page counts on reviews go to nearly zero unless the performer has published a link to the review elsewhere. And performers rarely publish a link to a bad review. Which means many reviewers, often at the urging of their publishers, write only "nice" reviews. "Honest" reviews are rare (Steven Holden of the NY TIMES is the only reviewer I actually read regularly). So, many cabaret "reviews" turn out to be "puff" pieces - accentuate the positive, ignore the negative.
Even I am a little bit in a bind, since I have to sell ads on my website. So I rarely write a report/review unless it is an absolute rave! I'll save my honest judgement to a personal e-mail, either to the performer or director (only on request). I hate to waste my time writing something that no one - or at least very few - will actually bother to read. The solution is to "hire" a reviewer or two to cover events. But, I can't afford this. (A review that isn't a paid review is often an exercise in self-aggrandizement on the part of the reviewer).

That being said, I did see a show this week - on Wednesday - and it was one I can give an unqualified and honest rave for: Wesla Whitfield with the Mike Greensill Trio at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - http://www.metropolitanroom.com/ ) - and you have two more chances to see it - Tonight and tomorrow night, Friday & Saturday, June 4th & 5th at 7:30 pm. And see it you must.
This show is a slightly shortened version of the show Wesla did in San Francisco - which sold out the 200-seat RRAZZ ROOM for 3 weeks, and will return to the RRAZZ for en extended run later this month. (The headline shows go 90 minutes at the RRAZZ). The show is "We're In The Money" (Songs from the Movies), and it is cabaret at its finest. It is "close up and personal" without the clap-trap of props and long stretches of patter. The songs were all written for Hollywood, with a few lesser known numbers plus many familiar, well loved songs. But its not the songs I'm raving about - its the performance! With one of the finest trios evert on stage at the METROPOLITAN, combined with one of the finest vocalist - known for magical lyric interpretation - this cabaret event is truly one of the most memorable in my 20 years of covering the art and artists of this live entertainment genre.

A little aside on this show. If you are a regular reader, you are aware that I usually am accompanied by my friend Daniel to cabaret shows. And, since English is not his primary language, I can often gauge the effectiveness of a particular perfomance via his feedback. Just as I can break into tears listening to a heart-rending Spanish ballad sung in a language I do not speak, he is often moved by performances of songs of which he only understands about 70%. (Cabaret has no official language.) By the third song of Wesla's show he was totally entranced! I usually want to scurry out after a show, but he insisted that we hang back after the line of well wishers and CD purchasers was ended so he could personally (with his usual energetic enthusiasm) tell Ms. Whitfield how he was touched by her performance. Of course, he included his usual "Daniel hug".

About the "big rooms"? Well, I've received two invitations to shows at FEINSTEIN'S and one at THE ALGONQUIN for this month. I usually don't attend shows in these spaces because I often have to "jump through hoops" to get a comp. Performers have a limited number of comps to hand out, and these "performer comps" do now include the minimum (normally in the $35-$60 range), which I simply cannot cover. So, what happens is, the performer is asked to pay my minimum instead. I learned this many years ago - it was a show by THE WISEGUYS at THE BALLROOM (that's how long ago!). My cover was deducted from their pay! There is too little money to be made by performers as it is, to ask someone to spend $35 bucks or more so I can attend. So, unless I am assured that "the house" is picking up the complete tab (or a record company), I don't attend.

I have no cabaret plans for tonight - just paid the rent and need to stretch out my funds until the SS check comes. Tomorrow night I will attend two shows - the Booth & Pat show at DON'T TELL MAMA at 7:00 pm and "Remembering Mel" a musical tribute to Mel Torme, by vocalist Warren Schein at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM at 9:45 pm.

COMING IN TOMORROW'S MEMBERS ONLY NEWSLETTER - a special sale on $25 HOME PAGE SIDE-BAR ADS - join today at SILVER lever and above and get in on it - limited number of ads available - order and payment must be made by JUNE 20th.

Wow - this was a good test! It's 10:00 am and I've said all I had to say today in less than 7000 words (far less than the usual 9000+ words. The big test will come on Monday, when we will try to get as much news as possible into that issue - plus a few HERE& THERE items. So, since many folks get to quit work early on Fridays, and many folks get these issues at work, I'm publishing at 10:30 am - just going over my newsletter to catch typos, etc. Waiting for your comments.

See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Join CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE for 2010-2011. Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support. Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!
Look for more news on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ), on the blog ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) and updates, picks & reminders on TWITTER ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ).

And that's just about the way it was. The rest will have to wait until Monday's issue.

HERE & THERE - PART I - BLOG EDITION

HERE & THERE - PART I

It's a time for change! We'll be going into our 21st year of publication, and we're going to shake things up! We're sending you the Thursday issue today only on Friday because the changes we wanted to make weren't quite ready yet yesterday.
First revision is about our twice-weekly newsletters. We're going to pack the Monday issue with listings, covering all events we can for about 3 weeks ahead. Plus the Monday issue will now also include all the events produced by our members giving discounts to members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE (currently in the Thursday issue). We will include in both issues the events and items promoted by our advertisers. The Thursday issue will now be called THE WEEKEND EDITION and will include the Friday, Saturday & Sunday events where guest performers are featured each show, ie THE AFTER PARTY, SALON and the radio show EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN, understanding full well that often guests aren't lined up before mid-week. This is the first issue going out in this format - let me know what you think (be gentle).
This also means the Thursday WEEKEND EDITION will include "more of me", namely the HERE & THERE sections. Each issue I find so much I want to say impossible to include because so much space has been taken up by listings. Now I can accumulate my thoughts event day and save them as "news items" like I do the press releases. Then add them to the newsletter on Thursdays, rather than waiting until Thursday to create them.
Next, we're in the process of making a major revision of our home page on the website. First off, we now list 2 days of cabaret events - to give current coverage to our many website visitors in Australia and South Africa, who by 6:00 am NY time, when I update the home page, are nearly done with their day. Now we can expand coverage in these areas. (Anyone in Australia who wants to collect cabaret news, please let me know - perhaps a barter deal).
This means as well (sorry) that I can't squeeze your item onto the website if I receive it less than 2 days in advance - it will have to go on the blog . Otherwise I would have to do a page revision, which cuts into my day big time!

We sent out sort of an advertising flier yesterday instead of the regular newsletter, so we're giving just a brief mention of these items today, but I did want to remind you of our 20th ANNIVERSARY GALA on July 13th. This 2-hour event will feature 20 performers doing 20 numbers! I will be the MC of the show, with Multi-Award winner Tracy Stark serving as musical director. Already booked to perform in the show: Esther Beckman, Lucille Carr-Kaffashan, Suzanne Carrico, Jill Cohen, Hector Coris, Booth Daniels, Baby Jane Dexter, Tim Di Pasqua, Terese Fischer, Sue Matsuki, Sidney Myer, Marcus Simeon, and Jim VanSlyke. More performers to be announced shortly. As with all live entertainment events, performers are subject to change without notice. More details and a link to the ticket order from is below. It's also my 71st birthday (actually on the 6th) and I truly hope that a lot of my friends from cabaret will be there. We moved it a week later than usual so that folks going out of town for the 4th of July weekend will be able to attend.

We now have 14 performers lined up, with 6 more to choose, and its getting tough to make choices. There are at least another 14 I want to include, but we only have the cabaret room for 2 hours. So, I am going to send out a few invites each day, knowing some I invite won't be available. Stay tuned, but be sure to purchase your tickets quickly. We are reserving 10 seats for press, and with 20 performers as well, we have less seats than ever to make available! All proceeds from the event will go to help CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE to survive the summer.

Update on London's PIZZA ON THE PARK: It was set to close this month, and then a reprieve was announced, allowing acts to be booked through the summer. Now it's off again. I ran into Steve Ross on Wednesday night at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM after Wesla Whitfield's show and he mentioned that he would be off soon to London where, from June 15th through the 18th he'll be at the Pizza on the Park. I quote: "Alas, this will be the closing week for this beautiful room. I'll be singing some songs from the many shows I've presented there since 1982!" So now it's official (or is it? This room has "closed" several times, only to extend).

We're happy to announce that, once more, Frank Ford has offered to send us weekly reports on the ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL. Frank is one of the founders of the event and last year he replaced our "reporter" of many years - Bill Stephens. Meantime, our pal via TWITTER, Matthew Carey is adding items daily to his blog http://cabaretconfessional.squarespace.com/ which you can find a link for on both the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE home (opening) page or on theCABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG plus we'll be sending a notice to our followers on TWITTER when he adds an item about the festival.

At the July show we give out two special awards: THE JEFF MATSON AWARD, for a person or persons who have demonstrated the qualities that Jeff had: creativity, originality, mentoring, in the the fields of cabaret directing, creation, writing and or design. And we also present THE DOTTIE BURMAN SONGWRITER AWARD, in honor of one of the originators of the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE membership concept. Dottie helped us adjust to "going it alone" after I had been working for another cabaret organization for a few years, and facing retirement at the same time. It was her suggestion to offer memberships along the PBS model, to keep CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE going.
All subscribers are asked to offer suggestions/nominations for each of these two awards (I've very nearly settled on the Dottie Burman award recipient, but you might just have a better nominee I haven't thought of). Nominees may not be folks who have won either of these awards previously (see the website for past recipients). Please include the reasons for your nomination, not just a name. I will make the final choice, but I truly would like as many names as possible. In past years we have presented two Jeff Matson awards, and we might just do that again. All nominations will be kept confidential.

We're also happy to report that the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE BLOG is now getting over 300 visitors a day! We're looking for a sponsor or two for the blog - ad will appear for a month and seen by every visitor - but haven't come up with a price yet. Our SUPER SIDE BAR AD, which appears on 2700 pages in the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website every time, and is therefor seen by from 6,000 to 10,000 visitors a day, runs $80 per week. Have to get out my slide rule.

S.F.: Cloris Leachman in "Cloris! A One Woman Show"

Oberlin plans to explore the endlessly delicious wit, beauty and depth of Loesser's film and Broadway songs. Eric Michael Gillett directs, Jon Weber serves as musical director and accompanist (with Tedd Firth for the final 5 performances), and Sean Smith plays the bass. Call for cover/minimum information.
