MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II - BLOG EDITION

===============
MORE "HERE & THERE" PART II
===============
Please, please, please don't wait until the last minute to send me your press releases! (I actually received two last night for shows going on today!). I promise to do my very best to help you promote your show, but if I don't know about it beyond a one-line item on a show schedule, I can't write about it!

I seem to say this every once in a while: take chances in choosing your cabaret shows. Too often we stick to a small selection of performers when we choose where to spend our cabaret time. You might just be surprised that the fantastic talented performers you might be missing by confining your cabaret time to a "chosen few". I had two pleasant surprises this week - I saw shows my performers I knew next to nothing about and had never seen perform.

See the two reviews of newcomers to the NYC cabaret scene above.

---------------
OK, I haven't included much in the way of reviews in the newsletter lately. Here's my problem: I can't figure out how to transfer the reviews to the website. I've tried different methods of giving them a "permanent home" so that performers can refer or restudy them - the review section of the website (they are too short for a page of their own), the blog (which only lately, since I moved my daily picks there, has gained readers) and even played with the concept of "a blog of their own". We'll keep trying.

---------------
Speaking of reviews, the worst thing you can do when you receive an especially hurtful review is to send a letter to the reviewer, chastising them for their writing. The second worst thing to do is to copy the review and email it to all your friends along with your comments about how dumb the reviewer was, etc. Not only are you empowering someone who might get their "jollies" by writing nasty comments, eagerly awaiting a show they can attach them to, but you are also publicizing the review - not a very smart thing to do. Much better to choose one or two sentences from the review (if any) that might be complementary, and quoting them again and again in promoting your show, thereby defusing the review (and probably really irritating the reviewer). Its so easy to write a nasty, mean-spirited review. It takes no talent whatsoever. Its much more difficult to write a review that points out the good things in a show, and suggesting a few things that might make it even better. And for the show that has absolutely has no merit? A truly dedicated reviewer will ignore it.

CABARET REVIEW: MARIKA AUBREY at DON'T TELL MAMA

On Tuesday, April 20th, I was back at DON'T TELL MAMA for the NYC debut (perhaps even the USA debut) of Australian performer Marika Aubrey. Auburn-haired Ms. Aubrey was born in a small town in Australia about 90 miles north of Sydney, called Redhead. Redhead was the name of her show, which highlighted some of the famous redheads of the Broadway musical theater history - Rita Hayworth, Gwen Verdon, Ethel Merman, Lucille Ball and more. I will simply say, the performance (including the arrangements by fellow Aussie Geoffrey Castles) was without a flaw! For a full hour Ms. Aubrey kept everyone enthralled with her sparkling stories, exciting movement, and most of all, her fantastic Broadway belt (she actually did a Merman song without microphone). Direction was by another Australian cabaret star, Hayden Tee. With just the right balance of information and song, the show could very nearly called "cabaret perfection." Several times I had to restrain myself from shouting "Brava" (OK, I did break the reviewer's code of silence once, but I couldn't help it). A big thank you from the person in Australia who clued me in to this show - there was very little advance press, and I had never received a release or notice beyond the one-line entry on the DON'T TELL MAMA schedule. I truly hope that Ms. Aubrey will return soon!

CABARET REVIEW: MARISSA MULDER at DON'T TELL MAMA

On Monday night, April 19th, at the urging of the director of the show, Karen Oberlin, I went to the cabaret debut of Marissa Mulder at DON'T TELL MAMA called Lost & Found" and subtitled "A Determined, If Ditsy, Cabaret Debut." The show included many of the standards we often hear in cabaret (Route 66, Another Hundred People, Moon River, I Enjoy Being a Girl) from familiar composers. But they were delivered with a freshness that kept my attention throughout. A triplet of Sentimental Journey, It's Only a Paper Moon and Moon River, most artfully arranged by musical director Tracy Stark, was sort of the centerpiece of the show, but each song in the 17-song set exhibited another facet of Ms. Mulder's abilities - ballad to belt. The room was packed with fans and family, and it was a thrill to see so many new/young faces, perhaps many attending a cabaret show for the first time. My only quibble was that the patter seemed to be a little long in spots - sometimes straying a bit from the concept of the song being introduced. But, for a "first time out", this show was a great introduction to a talented vocalist.

Just a quick note to all about a two cabaret problems that you can each help correct by making a simple phone call. I was at a show Monday night and fully half the audience arrived without reservations. The staff was not prepared, people had to be reseated to make room for parties of 6 and 8, it took some time to settle the room down, and the show went up late as a result.

Around the same time, I received notes from 3 performers, with shows during this week, that they had been notified by management that they had only a few reservations in the books, and unless they received at least 20 reservations, their shows would be cancelled. (They would still have to pay a room fee and/or lose their deposit, and probably the musicians would also need payment.) These performers regularly get over 50 at their shows, but many of their fans choose to arrive without a reservation.

So, if you plan on seeing a show - and even not quite sure you will make it - phone in your reservations immediately so the "show can go on" and the venue can be prepared with enough wait staff to serve the room sufficiently. Don't wait to the last minute, see the show cancelled, and your favorite performer stuck with a big bill and no income.

---------------
Just a little "thoughts & prayers" note regarding the legendary Margaret Whiting who in failing health in a nursing facility in New Jersey, and is truly in need of your concern at this time. I can't seem to get any "official" information, so I'm not sure of the seriousness of the situation, but we have at least this much on good report.

NYC: 1930s IDOL WINNER EXTENDED AT THE METROPOLITAN ROOM

This year's reigning 1930s Idol champion, Sigali Hamberger, takes a departure from her take on the classics that earned her the title in her show "Solstice" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Thursday, April 22nd at 7:30 pm. Instead, Sigali explores a more contemporary and complex set of standards, art songs, and Broadway gems from Arlen and Azanavour to Bernstein and Bucchino. Musical direction & arrangements are by Ido Alexander and the show is directed by Eric Michael Gillett. Rodgers and Hart were on to something when they wrote about the noble pursuit of singing for one's supper. Sigali wants nothing more than to do just that. Her theater work includes roles inThe King & I, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, She Loves Me, The Mikado, Country Club, and A Christmas Carol. More recently she finds at home on the cabaret stage singing the standards, both classic and contemporary, from the American songbook to Broadway. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: DAVE HOLLAND QUINTET AT BIRDLAND

A highly accomplished master of tone and rhythm, the Grammy winning bassist, composer, and bandleader is now in his fifth decade as a performer and his music possesses a rich and kaleidoscopic history. His path has led him from the frontiers of free improvisation to his modern ensembles that fully embody the Sam Rivers-instilled philosophy of "playing all of it." The Wolverhampton, England, native got his big break from Miles Davis, with whom he played during the trumpet legend's epochal Bitches Brew period. Solo, and in collaboration, Holland became a dominant voice in the 1970s - partnering with Rivers, and working with folk and rock musicians such as Bonnie Raitt and John Hartford, and even had a passing encounter with Jimi Hendrix. He formed his first working quintet in 1983, and continued to develop other fruitful relationships with artists such as Anthony Braxton, Stan Getz, Cassandra Wilson, Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Betty Carter, Pat Metheny, Kenny Wheeler, Bill Frisell, Roy Haynes and Herbie Hancock over the course of his career. RING THEM BELLS - SAVE THEM SHOWS!

Just a quick note about a two cabaret problems that you can each help correct by making a simple phone call.

I was at a show last night and fully half the audience arrived without reservations. The staff was not prepared, people had to be reseated to make room for parties of 6 and 8, the show went up late, and it took some time to settle the room down to start the show.

At the same time, I received notes from 3 performers, with shows this week, who had been notified by management that they had only a few reservations in the books, and unless they received at least 20 reservations, their shows would be cancelled. (They still have to pay a room fee or lose their deposit, and probably the musicians would also need payment.) These performers regularly get over 50 at their shows, but many of their fans choose to arrive without a reservation.

So, if you plan on seeing a show - and even not quite sure you will make it - phone in your reservations immediately so the "show can go on" and the venue can be prepared with enough wait staff to serve the room sufficiently.

FINAL CALL FOR COMMENTS: I'm still seriously studying whether to continue the CABARETSINGS.COM website. While the website continues to get about 100 visitors a day, there seems to be a complete lack of interest on the part of new songwriters to join the program. Inclusion on the website only involves joining as a member at any level - so before asking the current partipants to rejoin for 2010-2011, I must come to a decision. Several songwriters listed have reported song requests/sales through the site, but with so few currently involved, I need to decide if it is all worth the effort involved.

See a show or two this week! Visit our websites! Run a banner or sidebar ad! Now - more than ever - cabaret (and CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE) needs your support. Every day, in every way, we're promoting cabaret!

Look for more news on the website ( http://www.cabarethotlineonline.com/ ), on the blog ( http://cabarethotlineonline.blogspot.com/ ) and updates, picks & reminders on TWITTER ( http://twitter.com/cabarethotline ).

And that's just about the way it was. I still have a lot more to tell you about but we've run out of space so the rest will have to wait until Mondays's issue.

Thanks for your support of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE!

NYC: DAVE HOLLAND QUINTET AT BIRDLAND

The Dave Holland Quintet will be appearing at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 ) Tuesday through Saturday, April 20th through 24th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
