TORONTO: BILL KING TRIO WITH SELENA EVANGELINE AND GAVIN HOPE

Pianist-composer-publisher Bill King, along with jazz vocalists Selena Evangeline and Gavin Hope will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, January 29th through 31st at 9:00 pm. King is a multi-talented individual whose recording and production credits include 'Live! In Session' by Liberty Silver; 'Magnolia Nights, Moment's Notice' by Bill King and the Jazz Report All-Stars, 'From The Heart' a tribute to piano great Oscar Peterson, 'East Side Symphony, The Night Passage Years' and most recently Bill King's Saturday Nite Fish Fry "Jump Shout Rock da House," The Rockit 88 Band's "Too Much Fun" and the King-Alleyne-Roth Trio's "It Might As Well Be Spring.". These projects highlight King's versatility as both a keyboardist and composer. Selena Evangeline is, without question, a world class singer. The sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Chaka Khan, Prince and Stevie Wonder helped shape the musician she is today. As a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, her songs are musical snapshots of real life and emotions, from a real woman. Those "snapshots" helped to win her an Ontario Independent Music Award for Best Urban, Barrie New Music Award as well as honorable mention in the John Lennon Song Writing Competition. Her debut album "This Girl's Life" was featured on CTV's "Da Kink In My Hair" and her single "Lifesong"received heavy rotation on Canadian airwaves as well as MuchVibe and MTV1. Selena's second release, "Bad Weather", is a blend of R&B/Soul, Jazz, Pop, Funk and even a little classic sounding rock - a sound that she likes to call "Alternative R&B". Gavin Hope's career spans the stage, film, television and song. At 20, he joined Canadian pop a cappella sensation The Nylons, performing on four albums and touring with the group across Canada, Europe, Asia and South America. Gavin's lead vocal on the hit single "Love TKO" helped earn the group a Juno nomination for Best R&B Recording. Post Nylons, Gavin ventured back into professional theatre playing "Collins," the lead character in the Canadian company of RENT at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre, and later as "Simba" in the original Canadian company of The Lion King. Gavin recorded his debut solo album "Anything Like Mine" in the late 90's and scored multiple charted singles, as well as a second Juno nomination for Best R&B Recording. He has shared the stage with Shania Twain, Deborah Cox, Jill Scott, Nathalie Cole, James Brown and Aretha Franklin. His new solo album "For All We Know" is a vocal jazz influenced release produced by and featuring, Bill King on piano. There is a $15-$20 cover.

NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: STEVE LIPPIA SINATRA CENTENNIAL AT BIRDLAND

Steve Lippia celebrates the Sinatra Centennial at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, January 27th through 31st with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Steve Lippia has become one of the most prominent, in-demand vocalists and has quickly established his place among the finest interpreters of "standards" and traditional pop music in the nation. Steve's youthful, energetic talent and powerful show creates a perfect blend of "classic" with "today". His show introduces a new generation to this timeless music, while appealing to long-time listeners. Steve has headlined in highly successful, extended engagements at the Rio Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and Resorts Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, where SRO audiences lined up more than two hours before show time to vie for seating. He has performed in multiple engagements for Hilton Atlantic City and Casino Windsor, among others.

NYC: THE BLUE NOTE PRESENTS CHRISTIAN SCOTT

Edison Award winning trumpeter/ composer/ producer/ bandleader Christian Scott performs at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, January 29th through February 1st with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Scott stands tall among a handful of talented young jazz artists who are expanding their artistic vision beyond the strict confines of the genre's tradition. Throughout his career, Scott has been an intrepid explorer, from his Grammy nominated debut Rewind That to his genre stretching last album Yesterday You Said Tomorrow. Scott ups the ante on his compelling new double album, Christian aTunde Adjuah, an inspired and provocative two-CD, 23-track collection that spans a range of beyond-jazz influences as he continues to make strides into uncharted jazz territory. Scott's band consists of guitarist Matthew Stevens, drummer Jamire Williams, bassist Kristopher Keith Funn and pianist Lawrence Fields, with guests including tenor saxophonist Kenneth Whalum III, alto saxophonist Louis Fouche IIII and trombonist Corey King. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: PHAROAH SANDERS AT DIZZY'S

Legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders performs at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, January 28th through February 1st with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Sanders first rose to fame in the 1960s after joining the Sun Ra Arkestra and John Coltrane's later ensembles. An essential (and essentially divisive) component of free jazz's early days, Sanders was first recognized for his notoriously aggressive and huge tenor sound. Without losing any of his raw power - or his ability to quite literally make his instrument scream - Sanders quickly began to further expand upon and refine his craft into a more patient, melodic, and spiritually peaceful sound, working a unique beauty into the psychedelic spaciousness of Sun Ra, alongside the improvisational chops and compositional courage of contemporaries like John and Alice Coltrane. Virtuosic, harsh, and one-of-a-kind, Sanders still has the rare qualities that propelled his career for half a century, plus more tricks up his sleeve than ever. There is a $45 cover.
