NY STATE: MARRIAGE MUSICAL, I DO! I DO! SET ON FORT SALEM STAGE

NY STATE: MARRIAGE MUSICAL, I DO! I DO! SET ON FORT SALEM STAGE

Opening on Friday, July 5th for two weekends, TheMAINSTAGE AT FORT SALEM THEATER (11 East Broadway, Salem, NY - 518-854-9200) continues its summer season staging I Do! I Do!, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's classic musical about fifty years of marriage. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm, July 5th through 7th & 12th through 14th. The original Broadway production in 1966 starred Mary Martin and Robert Preston, and brought him a Tony Award for his work. To portray the timeless characters they created, the Fort has enlisted the services of Broadway and film performer Jim Raposa and his stage partner from last year's Significant Others, a young veteran of national tours and regional theater, Saratogian Rosie Spring. Jones and Schmidt hit pay dirt with their first show together, The Fantasticks, in 1960 and struggled to match its popularity. After some success with 110 in the Shade, the musical based on The Rainmaker, they adapted a small 1951 play about marriage, The Fourposter, by Jan de Hartog, which had served as a vehicle for husband-and-wife team, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. That production won Tonys for Best Play and for Best Director (Jose Ferrer). The musical adaptation, I Do! I Do!, ran for 580 performances. A Farm-to-Table Dinner Theater Package with local Gardenworks Farm is available on Saturday, July 6th. Information online at http://fortsalemtheater.com or by calling the Fort's box office

NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NY STATE: MARRIAGE MUSICAL, I DO! I DO! SET ON FORT SALEM STAGE THROUGH SUNDAY

NY STATE: MARRIAGE MUSICAL, I DO! I DO! SET ON FORT SALEM STAGE THROUGH SUNDAY

SF: FUNK THE FOURTH WITH: THE BERNIE WORRELL ORCHESTRA AT YOSHI'S

SF: FUNK THE FOURTH WITH: THE BERNIE WORRELL ORCHESTRA AT YOSHI'S

The Bernie Worrell Orchestra will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600 - ) on Thursday, July 4th at 8:00 pm. From the fat Minimoog bass lines of "Flash Light" and "One Nation Under A Groove" to the percussive piano runs of "Chocolate City" and "Give Up the Funk," Bernie Worrell is synonymous with the legacy of Parliament-Funkadelic; in fact, he's one of the originators of the psychedelic funk sound, having written and co-produced the lion's share of the music going back to Funkadelic's formative years, with an eclectic ear for everything from Chopin to the Chi-Lites. June 2011 saw the release of "Bernie Worrell: Standards" - Bernie's take on jazz standards - precipitating the decision by Worrell and co-producer, Evan Taylor to "take the show on the road". The Bernie Worrell Orchestra performs with a eight piece band consisting of two guitarists, one drummer, bass, percussion and a three piece horn section that performs songs from this album but also songs from Bernie's vast repertoire. The enthusiastic response from fellow musicians means you just don't know who will show up to join the BWO on stage.

NY STATE: CHERYL BENTYNE AND MARK WINKLER AT SYRACUSE JAZZ FEST

NY STATE: CHERYL BENTYNE AND MARK WINKLER AT SYRACUSE JAZZ FEST

Cheryl Bentyne and Mark Winkler will perform on Thursday, July 4th at the SYRACUSE JAZZ FEST (Syracuse, NY - July 4th-6th -http://syracusejazzfest.com ) performing music from their soon-to-be released CD "West Coast Cool". The female/male vocal duo is a common element in all forms of music; but in jazz, it's something of a rarity. The art of jazz vocalizing is such a personal statement that combining forces often demands a certain compromise that undermines that expression. It takes a rare combination of mutual artistic respect and conceptual freedom to achieve that proper level of expressiveness and cohesion. Cheryl Bentyne and Mark Winkler have clearly conquered that challenge with their outstanding new CD, West Coast Cool on Summit Records. See fest website for performance times and details.
