LOS ANGELES: CHAMBERS, HERBERT, & ELLIS AT THE GARDENIA

The vocal trio have struck a mother lode of unique and exhilarating musical material through exhuming, creatively re-working, and re-inventing works of legendary jazz artists through the nearly lost art of "vocalese": assigning what would generally be considered instrumental riffs to the human voice. Creating an impact reminiscent of The Manhattan Transfer, the group's repertoire pays homage to the vocal treatments of Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, many of which were themselves based on Ellington or Basie big band arrangements. Their popularity continues to increase as word of mouth spreads, and the "buzz" surrounding them is well-deserved. If you have yet to experience the musical excitement this unique trio consistently generates, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better time or a better place. Call for cover/minimum information.

The MAINSTAGE AT FORT SALEM THEATER (11 East Broadway, Salem, NY - 518-854-9200) is delighted to open its summer Mainstage season with the Rose Center Theater production of Tony winners Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston's romantic musical, Phantom, running one weekend only, Friday & Saturday, June 20th & 21st at 8:00 pm and Sunday, June 22nd at 2:00 pm. Shortly after winning their Tony Award for Nine, Best Musical of 1982, librettist Arthur Kopit and songwriter Maury Yeston adapted Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel, Phantom of the Opera, into a Broadway-style musical. Just as their producers set out to announce plans for a Broadway opening, they were ambushed by British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, fresh and financially fortified by the success of Cats, who produced his own version, Phantom of the Opera, first in London and then in New York. Kopit and Yeston lost both their investors and their interest in the project until Kopit turned the show, without songs, into a four-part miniseries for NBC. Call for cover/minimum information.

BOSTON: THE REGATTABAR PRESENTS ALEXI

Singer/ songwriter Alexi performs at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Saturday, June 21st at 7:30 pm. Alexi's music harkens back to the days of Marvin and Stevie, when soul and pop combined, creating mainstream music that touched the body and moved the soul. It's music with a message; music that not only sounds good, but feels good. This human touch has been lost in contemporary soul music. Alexi is bringing it back. Alexi began writing songs at age eleven. His early influences included Motown and Elvis Presley, but he discovered gospel music through Langston Hughes' Black Nativity at the Tremont St. Temple in Boston. At Newton North High School, he began performing in and composing for their Jubilee Singers Gospel Choir. While at Tufts University, he assisted with a number of local gospel choirs, including Tufts' Third Day Gospel Choir and the Harvard Kuumba Singers, and, upon graduating, became the Assistant Director of Boston College's "Voices of Imani." He currently is a choral director and educator at the Noble and Greenough School, piano teacher at the Butterfly Project, and keyboardist at the Myrtle Baptist Church. He continues to rise on the Boston soul scene, headlining local soul music venues and playing at festivals in and around the area. There is a $15 cover.

TORONTO: TORONTO JAZZ FESTIVAL: MARK McLEAN FEATURING KELLYLEE EVANS

McLean had a single criterion when it came time to expand his horizons beyond the groove and record his long awaited breakout as a powerhouse composer and lyricist: it had to Feel Alright. In an industry that often prefers pigeonholing to expansive creative expression, the multi-talented artist breaks all the rules on this eclectic 11 track CD, sharing his love for everything from old school soul, down and dirty blues/funk and traditional jazz to Southern folk-pop with a zydeco twist, Rat Pack-like swing, edgy pop/rock and New Orleans brass band music. While a complete one-eighty in vibe and vision, Feel Alright is the follow-up to McLean's acclaimed 2010 indie recording Playground, an all-instrumental showcase for his band of the same name whose tracks earned significant airplay on both traditional jazz and urban jazz stations. The new album is produced by Grammy winning engineer and producer Steve Bigas, well known for his previous work with Taj Mahal and Ziggy Marley and for his long association with Daniel Lanois. MANHATTAN: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, June 14th, 21st & 28th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

He may bear the name of jazz royalty, but saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, the son of the legendary John Coltrane and pianist Alice Coltrane, sets his own course - his own style. His latest Blue Note Records CD, "Spirit Fiction," was produced by label mate and fellow saxophonist Joe Lovano. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

Grammy award winner Danilo Perez is among the most influential and dynamic musicians of our time. In just over a decade, his distinctive blend of Pan-American jazz (covering the music of the Americas, folkloric and world music) has attracted critical acclaim and loyal audiences. Danilo's abundant talents and joyous enthusiasm make his concerts both memorable and inspiring. Whether leading his own ensembles or touring with renowned jazz masters (Wayne Shorter, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy), Danilo is making a decidedly fresh imprint on contemporary music, guided, as always, by his love for jazz. He has led his own groups since the early '90s, and as bandleader has earned three Grammy nominations for his ebullient and innovative recordings. Motherland, was nominated for two Grammy Awards for "Best Latin Jazz Album," and also garnered his third win for "Best Jazz Album" from the prestigious Boston Music Awards. Motherland was named (as were his previous four releases) among the best albums of the year by such publications as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, San Diego Tribune, Billboard and Jazz-Times. In 2002, he received a nomination from the Jazz Journalists Association for "Pianist of the Year." D'Rivera defies categorization. The winner of numerous GRAMMY Awards, he is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and for his achievements as a classical composer. The Cuban jazz reedman has recorded more than 30 solo albums and founded many acclaimed ensembles dedicated to celebrating Latin music, including the Chamber Jazz Ensemble, the Paquito D'Rivera Big Band, and the Paquito D'Rivera Quintet. While D'Rivera's discography reflects a passion for jazz, bebop, and Latin music, his contributions to classical music are significant as well, having performed as a soloist with orchestras like the London Philharmonic, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, and the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. After raising $17,000 in a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2013, Stearns has been hard at work with musical director Christopher Denny and producer Paul Rolnick on producing his debut album, due out in the autumn of 2014. But Stearns just couldn't stand to wait that long to unveil the arrangements on the album - that's where SNEAK PEEK comes in. The show will feature some (not all this is just a peek!) of the songs from the album as well as a few tunes that didn't make the cut due to time constraints. Consider this the "Special Features" section on the DVD: bits from the cutting room floor, commentary from the artist, and an all-around good time. NEW YORK STATE: FORT SALEM THEATER INAUGURATES ITS SUMMER SEASON WITH YESTON & KOPIT'S PHANTOM

Fort Salem's Phantom is directed by part-time Salem resident Tim Nelson, artistic director at The Rose Center Theater in Westminster, California.

In Southern California, all is not as it seems. And this band, which hails from Santa Barbara, isn't making the breezy music expected to come out of a seaside town. Tommy and the High Pilots is a group of friends who have known each other for years and finally formed a band. Tommy Cantillon and his brother Michael (keys) have been playing and singing together their whole lives. Steve Libby (bass) has been a friend for over a decade. And Tommy met Matt Palermo (drums) when their previous bands crossed paths on the road years ago. Will Weston was exported with a box of pineapple from the tropics of Hawaii to forge a second home in San Francisco. His debut album, Quiet, Sirens, transposes the heartbeat of this foggy metropolis via lush guitar hooks, infectious melodies, and a healthy excess of handclaps. Half city-inspired funk, half extraterrestrial field guide to earthbound nomadism with a side of straight blues, Weston's kinetic collection of feel-good bone-rattlers raises pulses, eyebrows, and shot glasses. Backed now by a tight & talented rhythm section of the city's finest in Dan Manian, (bass) Anthony Petrocchi, (drums) Erik Strom, (guitar) and Brandon Jackson, (trumpet) Weston's quintet brings an electric dosage of rooftop-inspired melodies, a response to the sighing bus pistons and traffic tides, an intersection all his own.
