Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Her debut album, Never Never Land (2000), remained on the Billboard Jazz chart for over a year and was voted Best Debut Recording by the members of the Jazz Journalists Association. Her second release, Come Dream with Me (2001), came just a year later and landed atop the Billboard Jazz charts, while In the Sun, her 2002 release, earned a Grammy nomination for Vince Mendoza in the Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals category. CABARET TONIGHT IN LONDON: CHLOE CHARLES AT CRAZY COQS - CLOSING NIGHT

CABARET TONIGHT IN LONDON: CHLOE CHARLES AT CRAZY COQS - CLOSING NIGHT
EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL EVENT

Singer/ songwriter Chloe Charles will perform at THE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL (20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888 ) on Friday & Saturday, November 22nd & 23rd at 8:00 pm.The press has likened Chloe Charles to everyone from Bjork to Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse to Adele, Alicia Keys to Joni Mitchell. While this undoubtedly reflects her unfathomable range, it also goes a long way towards describing why this singing sorceress' musical magic defies any and all straitjackets of classification. She is just spellbindingly different, playing stunning classical guitar and writing songs that evoke the sound of fellow-Canadian Joni Mitchell. Her discovery of classical guitar just a few short years ago fuelled a love for all things stringed and resonant, plotting a roadmap for a territory inhabited by cello, violin and bass - each song a mini-symphonic stopping point. Here, her penchant for orchestral soul pop and jazz - and a blend of many influences in-between - could happily co-exist within a timeless and ethereal soundscape. Since her debut CD Little Green Bud two years ago, Ontario-born Chloe has performed 300 shows in 8 countries and her debut at The Crazy Coqs as part of the EFG LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL coincides with the release of her first full length CD Break The Balance. Call for cover/minimum information.
