PALM SPRINGS, CA: VARLA JEAN MERMAN AT THE COPA
Jeffery Roberson, aka Varla Jean Merman, will appear at THE COPA (244 East Amado Road, Palm Springs CA - 760-866-0021) on Friday & Saturday, May 1st & 2nd at 8:00 pm. Roberson starred in the new musical Lucky Guy opposite Leslie Jordan in NY at the Little Schubert in spring 2011. He recently completed shooting the feature film Girls Will Be Girls 2012 and Varla Jean and the Mushroomheads (now available on www.SethTV.com). He played the title role of Giancarlo Menotti's opera The Medium in New York at the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theatre in October of 2012. He guest starred as Varla Jean on Ugly Betty in the final season of the show and was also featured on Bravo's Project Runway Season 5 as the winning model for the show's drag challenge. He played the role of Mary Sunshine in the revival of Chicago on Broadway and also made his network television debut on All My Children in the recurring role of lady of the evening Rosemary Chicken. He shared the Outfest Film Festival "Best Actor" Award and the Aspen HBO Film Festival "Best Actress" Award with his costars Jack Plotnick and Clinton Leupp for his featured performance in the cult classic film Girls Will Be Girls (Sundance 2003) directed by Richard Day. He also appeared at the Long Wharf Theatre in Hartford Stage's production of The Mystery of Irma Vep directed by Michael Wilson performing the roles originally made famous by Charles Ludlam. In 2010 Jeffery won an Elliot Norton Award for Best Musical Performance in The Phantom of the OPRAH. He returned to Boston in the fall of 2011 to star as Mother Superior in SpeakEasy Stage's production of The Divine Sister by Charles Busch. As Varla Jean, Jeffery has filled cabarets and concert halls across the world including the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, the New York Public Theater, London's Soho Theatre and LA's Renberg Theatre. Jeffery wrote and starred in the short Improve Your History with Varla Jean: Stonewall, for the launch of the MTV's television network Logo and was also seen in their One Night Standup: Dragtastic special. Carol Curtis performs at MARTINI'S ABOVE FOURTH (3940 4th Avenue, San Diego, CA - 619-400-4500 - ) pm Saturdays from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The musical road from Riverside, California to San Diego rambles through Nevada, Oklahoma and almost every state in between, where Carol Curtis traveled as a musician. With a degree in music education from Oklahoma State University, she inspired young minds for several years, only to return to her true calling: cabaret-style singing. Playing the audience as skillfully as she plays piano and guitar, Carol weaves an eclectic mix of torch songs, Broadway and standards into an evening of fun repartee. No cover charge.
LOS ANGELES: THE UNAUTHORIZED MUSICAL PARODY OF CRUEL INTENTIONS
Roger Kumble's relentless game of cat and mouse comes to life at the ROCKWELL: TABLE & STAGE (1714 Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA - 323-669-1550) on Fridays & Saturdays in April at 8:00 pm in 'The Unauthorized Musical Parody of Cruel Intentions'. This cult classic tale of seduction and revenge follows despicable step-siblings Sebastian (Broadway's Constantine Rousouli) and Kathryn (Faking It's Katie Stevens) in their attempt to destroy their classmates (Molly McCook and Pitch Perfect's Shelley Regner.) SAN FRANCISCO: MICHAEL FEINSTEIN CELEBRATES SINATRA AT 100
Considered one of the premier interpreters of American standards, the two time Emmy and five time Grammy nominated Michael Feinstein returns to FEINSTEIN'S AT THE NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 866-663-1063) on Wednesday & Thursday, April 29th & 30th at 7:00 pm for a celebration of Frank Sinatra's 100th birthday. Feinstein will pay tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes by performing some of Sinatra's most beloved classics including "New York, New York," "The Lady is a Tramp," and "All the Way." Feinstein's 200 plus shows a year have included performances at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House and the Hollywood Bowl as well as the White House and Buckingham Palace. More than simply a performer, Feinstein has received national recognition for his commitment to celebrating America's popular songbook and preserving its legacy for the next generation. In 2007, he founded the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative, dedicated to celebrating the art form and preserving it through educational programs, Master Classes and the Annual High School Vocal Academy and Competition which awards scholarships and prizes to students across the country. He serves on the Library of Congress' National Recording Preservation Board, an organization dedicated to ensuring the survival, conservation and increased public availability of America's sound recording heritage. Feinstein earned his fifth Grammy award nomination in 2009 for "The Sinatra Project," his concord Records CD celebrating the music of Ol' Blue Eyes. "The Sinatra Project, Volume II The Good Life" was released in 2011. His Emmy nominated TV special, "Michael Feinstein - The Sinatra Legacy," which was taped live at the Palladium in Carmel, IN is currently airing across the country. His PBS series "Michael Feinstein's American Songbook" was the recipient of the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award. Feinstein serves as the Artistic Director of the Palladium Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, IN which is home to the Great American Arts Festival and a museum for his rare memorablia and manuscripts. In 2010 he became the director of the Jazz and Popular Song Series at New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center. Most recently, Feinstein replaced the late Marvin Hamlisch as the lead conductor of the Pasadena Pops. Feinery, Feinstein's own record label and a Concord Records subsidiary, released "The Livingston & Evans Songbook," featuring Feinstein and special guest Melissa Manchester. Feinery also records favorite current artists and restores recordings and musical broadcasts from the golden age of popular song. There is an $80-$95 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.
