NYC: BLUE NOTE JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS: NILSON MATTA'S BRAZILIAN VOYAGE

2009 Grammy nominee Nilson Matta will present his Brazilian Voyage at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Sunday, Jun 29th at 11:30 am & 1:30 pm as part of the club's Sunday Jazz Brunch series. Matta has been a creative force in the evolution and popularity of Brazilian Jazz in the United States. Not long after he came to New York in 1985, he was performing and recording with Grammy-winning jazz greats Joe Henderson, Don Pullen, Kenny Barron, Bob Mintzer and Randy Brecker, as well as Herbie Mann, Lee Konitz and Mark Murphy. Drawing from these collaborations, and from his work with Brazilian luminaries such as Hermeto Pascoal, Joao Gilberto, Luis Bonfa, and Johnny Alf in Brazil, (to name a few), Matta has developed his own musical signature making him a first-call bass player of Brazilian music and jazz musicians. It's not surprising therefore, that when Yo Yo Ma sought band members for his Brazilian project, Nilson was the obvious choice for bass. Their recording of two Grammy CDs (Obrigado Brazil and Brazil - Live in Concert) prompted a two-year worldwide tour touching every corner of the globe. There is a $35 cover. **Price includes brunch, music and a drink.**

TORONTO: THE PICTURE OF HAPPINESS: BRAD HAMPTON AND PATTI LOACH

Brad Hampton And Patti Loach present 'The Picture of Happiness' at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Sunday, June 29th at 12:30 pm as part of the club's Sunday Jazz Brunch series. The Picture of Happiness tells the true story of an old photograph that actor-singer Brad Hampton discovers in his grandmother's basement when he is just twenty-three years old. Hidden away for decades, the photo, taken just before WWII, is of two soldiers sitting together on a picnic blanket. Smiling, with their arms around each other, the two young men are the picture of happiness. Brad knows that one of the men in the photograph is his grandfather, Bill. When he asks his mother who the other man is, she says, "We don't talk about it. We never talk about it." Over the course of a funny, moving and intimate hour, Brad makes the connection between his life today and the life his grandfather lived in 1943. Directed by Rae Ellen Bodie, Brad and pianist Patti Loach lovingly and hilariously depict a colourful cast of characters through storytelling and songs from the worlds of contemporary cabaret and musical theatre. There is a $25 cover.
