TORONTO: ALLYSON MORRIS AT JAZZ BISTRO

Recognized as a truly astonishing talent wherever she performs, Allyson Morris will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299 - ) on Tuesday, January 14th at 8:00 pm. Allyson has a rich and sultry voice that perfectly adapts to the rigorous demands of the jazz idiom. She is joined by Robi Botos - piano, Reg Schwager - guitar, Russ Boswell - bass and Shiraz - drums. At times employing a soulful and robust interpretation, other times a delicate and musically brilliant nuance, Allyson handles the old standards in a new way. Coupled with her more contemporary material, she delivers a unique sound that will please jazz aficionados everywhere. Well respected in the Canadian jazz world by all those who have played with her, this singer offers up a full plate of carefully-crafted tunes, a small town friendly attitude and a talent that will delight the listener. Joined on the Jazz Bistro stage by some of the finest players on the scene, Allyson will be performing classic jazz and pop standards, including songs from her recent debut recording, "I Saw the Light." There is a $10 cover.

D.C.: THE STACY BROOKS BAND AT BLUES ALLEY

The Stacy Brooks Band will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141 - ) on Tuesday, January 14th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The Stacy Brooks Band won the DC Blues Battle of Bands on 12 October 2013 competing first against 8 other bands. They will now compete in the 30th Annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN this month. Stacy started singing at the age of 5 in Zweibruken Germany at an Army show and after her first standing ovation there was no looking back. Fast forward to the present, with her diverse background she continues to give you toe tapping, head bobbing feel good music that crosses all barriers. Since she began her quest of the blues she has been working non-stop bridging the age gap on the blues circuit and importing fans from other genres. Call for cover/minimum information.

D.C.: ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: ALAN JAY PALMER TRIO

Alan Jay Palmer will be Artist in Residence at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800), performing every Tuesday in January with shows at 7:00 & 8:30 pm. Palmer was born in Washington D.C. and attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Alan was exposed to Jazz piano through his first teacher John Malachi and listening to Thelonious Monk , Mingus, and John Coltrane recordings that a neighborhood friend had. At that time, Alan was beginning to play around D.C. with different Go Go bands and developing his Jazz chops at Lettumplay with Fred Foss, Webster Young and other D.C. Jazz Legends. After high school, Alan attended the famous African American Music Department at The University of Hartford now known as The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz. While at the conservatory, Alan studied piano and orchestration from Jaki Byard and Hotep Galeta, and began his close mentorship with the master alto saxophonist/educator, Jackie McLean. Alan became Jackie's close disciple and assistant in Music History and Jazz Education. He was the first student ever entrusted to teach Jackie McLean's famous course "The Origin of Man and Music." During his senior year at Hartt Alan joined The Jackie McLean Quintet and toured Europe and Japan with the band. He also recorded his debut album with Jackie McLean on "Rhythm of the Earth" contributing four original compositions. A true dedicated musician, Currently Alan has now emerged as the leader of the BAP TRIO and THE NEW SOIL big bang and as a new composer in NYC. A talented actor, Alan recently performed in the Living Theatre's revival of Jack Gelber's play The Conection, also contributing new music. Alan has taught music to thousands of students and continues to conduct workshops and master-classes throughout the world. There is a $10 cover.
