NYC: JANE MONHEIT'S JAZZ PARTY AT BIRDLAND

Jane Monheit's Jazz Party, with Michael Kanan, Neal Miner, Rick Montalbano will be held at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays, at 6:00 pm. In just over fifteen years, critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Jane Monheit's honey-smooth vocals, silky phrasing and natural knack for storytelling have earned her two Grammy nominations and established her as one of her generation's most beloved and accomplished vocalists. Jane's sincere and romantic interpretations of exceptional songs has made her a favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds. Jane will debut her forthcoming project, "Hello Bluebird: Celebrating the Jazz of Judy Garland," in NYC during a weeklong engagement in January 2015. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE LEGENDARY COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA

THE LEGENDARY COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday, July 31st through Sunday, August 3rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. In the history of Jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for nearly 30 years after his passing. Pianist and bandleader William James "Count" Basie was and still is an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of Jazz. The Count Basie Orchestra has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, won 18 Grammy Awards, performed for Kings, Queens, and other world Royalty, appeared in several movies, television shows, at every major jazz festival and concert hall in the world. Some of the greatest soloists, composers, arrangers, and vocalists in jazz history such as Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Sonny Payne, Freddie Green, Snooky Young, Frank Wess, and Joe Williams, became international stars once they began working with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. This great 18 member orchestra, today directed by Scotty Barnhart, is still continuing the excellent history started by Basie of stomping and shouting the blues, as well as refining those musical particulars that allow for the deepest and most moving of swing. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: WILLIE JONES III SEXTET AT DIZZY'S

The Willie Jones III Sextet (With Willie Jones III, drums; Eddie Henderson, trumpet; Eric Reed, piano; Stacy Dillard, tenor saxophone; Steve Davis, trombone; and Dezron Douglas, bass) will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, July 31st through August 3rd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Known for his distinct style of rhythmic expression, drummer Willie Jones III is one of the world's top jazz drummers. As a leader, Jones has five critically acclaimed albums under his belt and can also be heard on Arturo Sandoval's GRAMMY Award-winning release Hot House and Kurt Elling's GRAMMY Award-nominated Night Moves. As a sideman, he's held long tenures in bands led by Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Cedar Walton. Jones' repertoire will include hard bop selections, the Cedar Walton songbook, and the debut of original tunes. There is a $40-$45 cover.
