WASHINGTON, DC: JACQUI NAYLOR AT BLUES ALLEY
Velvet-toned vocalist and songwriter Jacqui Naylor will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Monday, February 9th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. She is joined by Art Khu, piano & guitar; Ken Pendergast bass; and Josh Jones drums. Naylor is equally at ease singing music by Cole Porter and David Byrne as she is her own original music. Far from a straight-laced jazz purist, Naylor has made the mixing (and sometimes "smashing") of genres and eras her stock-in-trade, gaining fans and notoriety for singing the lyrics and melody of jazz standards over the grooves of well-known pop and rock songs and vice versa. There is a $20 cover.
WASHINGTON, DC: THE BOHEMIAN CAVERNS JAZZ ORCHESTRA MONDAYS
The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra performs every Monday night at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC) with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Still the Hottest Big Band in the City, The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra is a 17 piece powerhouse force cofounded by baritone saxophonist Brad Linde, trumpeter Joe Herrera and club owner Omrao Brown. The BCJO presents a variety of music from big band literature and features some of the District's best musicians. Music from Ellington, Basie, Strayhorn, Thad Jones, Oliver Nelson, Maria Schneider and originals by band members will embrace and challenge the tradition of big band repertoire. Call for cover/minimum information.
