NYC: ALYSHA UMPHRESS SWINGS JEFF BLUMENKRANTZ: "I'VE BEEN PLAYED"
The Broadway at Birdland concert series is proud to announce that Alysha Umphress, currently starring as "Hildy" in the Broadway revival of On The Town, and Tony-nominated songwriter Jeff Blumenkrantz will perform together at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 - ) in concert on Monday, January 5th at 7:00 pm. The duo will celebrate the release of their new CD, "I've Been Played," which features Jeff's swinging songs and arrangements performed as only Alysha can! The band will include Tedd Firth on piano, Pete Donovan on bass, Ray Marchica on drums, Dan Willis on sax/flute and Peter Sachon on cello. Umphress currently stars on Broadway as "Hildy" in the acclaimed revival of On the Town. Her other Broadway credits include American Idiot, On a Clear Day ... , Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and Bring It On. Most recently, she appeared as Cee Cee Bloom in the world premiere of Beaches, the musical, at The Signature Theatre. Known in the Broadway community for her incredible vocals, this CD marks her debut solo studio recording. Jeff Blumenkrantz received a Best Score Tony nomination for Urban Cowboy, the musical. His songs have been recorded by Audra McDonald, Sutton Foster, Rebecca Luker, Victoria Clark, Megan Mullally and more. As a performer, he most recently starred as "The Suspects" in the Off-Broadway hit musical, Murder for Two. His performing credits also include the Broadway productions of Into the Woods, Threepenny Opera, Damn Yankees, How to Succeed in Business ..., and A Class Act, as well as the PBS-televised concerts of Candide and Sweeney Todd with The New York Philharmonic. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

Every Monday night at 9:30 pm, Broadway impresario Jim Caruso hosts "Cast Party", a combination open-mic, networking event and party at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) during which the biggest stars on Broadway relax on their night off by performing their favorite songs in an informal setting. Cast Party is a mix of music, impromptu performance and cocktail party revelry, where showbiz superstars, stunning jazz talents and cabaret glitterati hit the stage alongside up-and-comers to serve up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle. It's the ultimate spot to mix and mingle with talented show folk and their fans. There is a $20 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: DEBORAH DAVIS & A FEW GOOD MEN - JAZZ BENEFIT CONCERT FOR THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY AT THE BLUE NOTE
Deborah Davis will host a benefit For The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - ) on Monday, January 5th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Davis is a world renound, multi talented, gifted singer and consummate performer. A jazz singer fused with gospel, Texas blues, soul, a natural flowing charm, and flawless stage presence; Deborah draws you into her show. Her distinct style of phrasing, extraordinary singing ability and professionalism earned her a nomination of U.S. Jazz Ambassador by the U.S. State Department in 2004. She has sung for dignitaries at United Nations & international Embassy affairs including a performance for former President Bill Clinton, an invitation to Athens, Greece by the U.S. Embassy to headline a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims, and an invitation by the Jamaican U.S. embassy to headline a Black History Celebration. Known to musicians as a hard swinging singer Deborah has been invitations to perform with legendary jazz greats Ray Brown, Lionel Hampton and Clark Terry, as well as an rare opportunity to substitute for Abbey Lincoln here at the Blue Note. Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, and Lou Donaldson have all shared their stage with Deborah inviting her to jam. Not limiting her talents to the jazz audience, Deborah has shared the stage with Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and sung with The Shirells. While sining in the house band at Monte Carlo Summer Festival '08 she opened for Celine Dione, Alicia Keys, Jill Scott, Diana Ross, Santana, Eric Clapton, Alanis Morisette, and more. A native of Dallas Texas, Deborah began singing as soon as she could speak. Her first inspiration towards a jazz career was when her high school choir director, jazz pianist Robert Sanders added her to his weekend gigs. Deborah went on to earn a Bachelor Of Music Education Degree in vocal studies from North Texas University and subsequently an Associate Arts Degree in Recording Engineering at Cedar Valley College. Her musical development brought her to NYC in 1986, where she has carved out a niche for herself on the U.S. East Coast and International jazz scenes. Always striving to be well rounded, Deborah ran a full 26.2 mile fundraising marathon with the LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY TEAM IN TRAINING in Dublin Ireland '98. After doing so she realized singing for the cause was a much better idea. Tonights concert marks the 17th Annual jazz benefit for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held annually here at the Blue Note, ( the first Monday of each year). When not on stage Deborah enjoys making jewelry, sewing, abstract arts and crafts, poetry, juicing ,vegetarian diet, Bikram yoga, and working out. Her favorite animals are monkeys. There is a $15-$25 cover.
NYC: MID-ATLANTIC COLLEGIATE JAZZ ORCHESTRA WITH SEAN JONES AT DIZZYS
Now in its seventh year, the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra has established itself as a premier collegiate all-star big band. The group is returning to DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 - ) on Monday, January 5th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm for its annual January performance, and this year's featured conductor/performer is former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Sean Jones. All undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for this elite band (upon receiving a nomination from an instructor), and the final lineup is selected by a committee of Cumberland Jazz Society members. This year, the band will perform a variety of selections from the contemporary big band library. This year's MACJO will perform a variety of selections from the contemporary big band library. The group, first assembled in 2009, has previously performed in New York, New Orleans, Washington DC, and Maryland. The MACJO is an initiative of the Cumberland Jazz Society, Inc. There is a $35 cover.
