NYC: DUCHESS VOCAL TRIO AT BIRDLAND
A vocal trio in the great tradition of the Boswell Sisters, Duchess will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 ) on Sunday, January 4th at 6:00 pm. The trio has quickly gained a reputation for providing tight harmonies and big fun at their shows. Vocalists Amy Cervini, Hilary Gardner and Melissa Stylianou join forces and voices to become, Duchess. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS
Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: CHRIS BOTTI - 10TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY RESIDENCY
THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) is proud to present world renowned trumpeter Chris Botti's milestone, highly anticipated 10th Annual Holiday Residency - a three week engagement from Mondays through Sundays, December 15th, 2014 through Sunday, January 4th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm (including Christmas and New Year's Eve). Botti has called the club his home every December since 2005. Over the years the residency Chris has featured special impromptu musical guests, such as Sting and John Mayer (2011). Celebrities from all walks of the entertainment business have attended Botti's Blue Note performances, ranging from Mary J Blige to Paul Haggis. Since the release of his 2004 critically acclaimed CD "When I Fall In Love," Chris Botti has become the largest-selling American instrumental artist. His success has crossed over to audiences usually reserved for pop muisc and his ongoing association with PBS has led to four #1 jazz albums, as well as multiple Gold, Platinum and Grammy Awards. Most recently, his latest album Impressions won the GRAMMY for Best Pop Instrumental Album at the 2013 55th GRAMMY Awards. Performing worldwide and selling more than four million albums, he has found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and expands beyond the limits of any single genre. There is a $40-$75 cover.
NYC: THE PETER BERNSTEIN QUARTET AT DIZZY'S
The Peter Bernstein Quartet featuring Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride & Greg Hutchinson, will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, January 2nd through 4th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Peter Bernstein is a real musician's guitarist, with maturity, impeccable feel, and a sound comparable to straight-ahead favorites like Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery. He seems to be everyone's favorite sideman these days, and he is also increasingly renowned as a leader and composer. Bernstein will be joined by GRAMMY Award winning pianist and keyboardist Brad Mehldau. Mehldau has recorded and/or toured with Joshua Redman, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, Jimmy Cobb, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Willie Nelson, and many more. Holding down the rhythm is drummer Greg Hutchinson. The group will be rounded out by renowned bassist Christian McBride. There is a $45 cover.
