NYC: JON WEBER: JOPLIN TO JARRETT
Jon Weber returns with his acclaimed show 'Joplin to Jarrett' to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - ) on Monday, January 5th at 7:00 pm. Joplin to Jarrett serves as a concise history of jazz piano with an emphasis on the earlier composers from the first half of the 20th Century. Over 100 years of music interspersed with musical excerpts with John Weber's insights and anecdotes reveal a lifetime's worth of impassioned research. Weber's extraordinary facility for recall and analysis allow him to form fascinating and unexpected connections between artists of different eras, their development and influences in jazz piano. Jazz pianist Jon Weber has recorded and toured all over the world, winning numerous honors for performance and composition - scoring extensively for television since 1987. Jon lives in New York City and hosts NPR's Piano Jazz with Jon Weber after frequently serving as guest host for Marian McPartland. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: LISA S. DONTZIN'S FAIRYTALE FACTS AT THE DUPLEX
Fairytale Facts will be presented at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438 - ) on Monday, January 5rh at 7:00 pm. Additional shows are scheduled for Mondays, January 12th, 19th & 26th, also at 7:00 pm. The show is an actors nightmare with a touching look at aging and beauty. Written and performed by Lisa S. NYC: MARY TESTA CELEBRATES NEW CD "HAVE FAITH"
Fresh off her recent starring role on Broadway in Wicked, Mary Testa - the two time Tony Award nominated singer and actress - and Michael Starobin, the Tony Award winning orchestrator and arranger will perform four concerts in January to promote their new album 'Have Faith' from Ghostlight Records at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) on Sundays & Mondays, December 4th & 5th and 11th & 12th at 7:00 pm. Starobin himself contributes original music to a sparkling new interpretation of "Sonnet 29," from Shakespeare's iconic series. The album was produced by David Baron, with arrangements for the 13-piece band by Mary Testa and Michael Starobin and orchestrations by Starobin. Catherine Rush serves as Executive Producer. NYC: A ROCKIN' MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM FOR THE 12.14 FOUNDATION
Broadway stars Marla Mindelle (Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella) and Clarke Thorell (Hairspray) and Off-Broadway star Saum Eskandani (Disaster!) are joined by several dozen children and teen performers from Newtown, CT to celebrate the launch of their World Premiere CD of A ROCKIN' Midsummer Night's Dream at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551 - ) on Monday, January 5th & Thursday, January 8th at 7:00 pm. This critically acclaimed fresh new take on Shakespeare's classic comedy features a fantastic new rock score by Eric Svejcar with lyrics by William Shakespeare, Eric Svejcar and Michael Unger. A ROCKIN' Midsummer Night's Dream recently completed a critically acclaimed run in Newtown, CT as part of the 12.14 Foundation's summer season. This new musical adaptation was written specifically for the young performers within the Newtown community and is being preserved on a 2 disc set which will be released to coincide with this 54 Below concert. The 12.14 Foundation was created as a means of using the performing arts to help heal, inspire and promote personal development within the Newtown community in the aftermath of the tragedy of December 14th, 2012.
