WASHINGTON, DC: CHRIS THOMAS KING AT BLUES ALLEY

Chris Thomas King, a determined progressive, will perform at BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, January 8th through 11th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. King is hoping to reinvigorate the blues as a living African American art with a more contemporary approach and adamantly refusing to treat it as a museum piece whose "authentic" forms needed careful preservation. King eventually modified that approach to a certain degree, attempting to create a more explicit link between blues tradition and the general musical present. Chris Thomas King is a New Orleans Grammy Award-winning musician and actor who is initially known for his audacious fusion of blues and hip-hop. King reached a whole new audience with his film debut in the Coen Brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, not only appearing on the award-winning soundtrack, but establishing himself as a serious dramatic actor as well. There is a $24 cover.

WASHINGTON, DC: THE YOUNG LIONS AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS

The Young Lions are a trio consisting of pianist Allyn Johnson, bassist Kris Fun, and drummer Quincy Phillips. Together they produce music that veers from the hardest of hard bop to funky fusion and even to hip-hop inflections. Quamon Fowler has grown accustomed to hard work and multi-tasking as a traveling performer, composer and student. 2004 was a banner year! Quamon was married, finished with his Music degree from Southern, traveled to Dubai, recorded a new CD, The Vision, participated in more jazz programs and started his Master's degree at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. While his wife worked on her Ph.D., he earned his Master's Degree in Music Performance (of course). Momentum continued in 2005. He won the North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition in Des Moines, IO. As a teaching assistant at Tech, he managed to juggle teaching small groups, jazz improv, and tour with Curtis Fuller & Marcus Belgrave, James Moody & Nathan Davis, and other artists nationally and internationally. Quamon competed in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 2008 in which he was able to win 3rd.place. There is a $23 cover.
