NYC: SPYRO GYRA AT THE BLUE NOTE

Spyro Gyra will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - http://www.bluenote.net/ ) on Tuesday through Sunday, March 11th through 16th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. During its career, the band has performed over five thousand shows, released 29 albums (not counting "Best Of" compilations), and sold over 10 million albums, while also achieving one Platinum and two Gold releases. As the band celebrates 35 years since its first release and looks forward to celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, it slows little sign of slowing down, gaining Grammy nominations for each of its last four albums. The first few years saw the group's identity split into a dynamic live act and a producer-centric recording process, borne out of the rotating cast of characters springing from the band's jazz jam beginnings. The group's early albums were the product of the core band and a great number of the top session players in New York. In 1983, Beckenstein made the decision to make the albums the work of the band members he shared the stage with night after night, only supplementing with occasional guests. Although the band underwent several personnel changes in the '80s, these shifts slowed down about 20 years ago. Julio Fernandez became the group's guitarist in 1984, Scott Ambush assumed the bass chair in 1991, and Bonny Bonaparte took over the drums in 2006, making him the "new guy" at just over five years with the band. After stretches releasing albums on the MCA, Amherst, GRP, and Heads Up International imprints, Spyro Gyra returned to Amherst for its latest release, 2011's A Foreign Affair. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: JOE FARNSWORTH PRIME TIME QUARTET AT DIZZY'S

Joe Farnsworth and the Prime Time Quartet will perform atDIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Tuesday & Wednesday, March 11th & 12th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Joe Farnsworth is regarded as one of the top jazz drummers in the world, but as far as he is concerned, he is just getting started. He is dedicated to the great tradition of jazz drumming as conceived by artists like Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins, and Arthur Taylor, with whom he studied. Farnsworth was introduced to jazz at the age of 12 by his brother, trombonist and saxophonist John Farnsworth. Since then, he has become one of the most respected drummers in the scene, appearing on more than 70 CDs with musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, Pharoah Sanders, Eric Alexander, and Benny Golson. This performance features a prestigious and highly in-demand band that includes Harold Mabern, Eric Alexander, and John Webber, each a talented leader in his own right. There is a $30 cover.

BOSTON: NIR FELDER CD RELEASE

Nir Felder will celebrate the release of his new CD 'Golden Age; at THE REGATTABARat the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Tuesday, March 11th at 7:30 pm. Felder is a new voice in jazz guitar. Growing up in the New York City suburbs, Felder spent his youth playing in rock bands while learning about jazz at the local record store, inspired by icons from John Coltrane to voodoo chile Jimi Hendrix. After attending Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship, Felder moved to New York City in 2006 and quickly became one of the city's most highly sought after sideman, notching credits in bands led by Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Jack DeJohnette, Greg Osby, Eric Harland, Jos• James, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Cindy Blackman and performing with the New York City Opera, Dianne Reeves, Bobby McFerrin, Stanley Clarke, Lizz Wright, Matisyahu, Black Sheep and others at venues including Radio City Music Hall and the Village Vanguard and national television stations NBC and Fox. Nir brought Aaron Parks (piano), Matt Penman (bass), and Nate Smith (drums) into Sear Sound in September of 2011. The group had a strong chemistry and sound that was beautifully captured in two days of recording by engineer Chris Allen. Felder then tapped legendary engineer and producer Bob Power (The Roots, Erkyah Badu, D'Angelo, Tribe Called Quest, Meshell Ndegecello) to mix and master the new album. The highly anticipated release, Golden Age (Sony/OKeh), deals with the themes of political, cultural and technological upheaval, with ennui and redemption, with paradise lost and then regained, blurring the lines between jazz and the rock, hip-hop, and pop music Felder grew up listening to. There is a $20 cover.
