BOSTON: AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE AT THE REGATTABAR
A spiritual seeker in the grand tradition of musical aspirationalists, trumpeter/composer Ambrose Akinmusire will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, March 12th at7:30 pm. Akinmusire has staked his place at the vanguard of jazz and artistic expression. The winner of the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and the 2007 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition, Akinmusire has proved himself one of the most vital and deft trumpeters of his generation. Akinmusire's forward-reaching compositions have earned him a commission from New York's Jazz Gallery and grants from the Rockefeller Foundation's MAP Fund and Chamber Music America's French-American Jazz Exchange Program. In 2011, he debuted his star-studded Big Band on one of the world's most renowned stages, Carnegie Hall. The following year he was named Artist-in-Residence at the 55th annual Monterey Jazz Festival. D.C.: THE ELDAR TRIO AT BLUES ALLEY
The Eldar Trio will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Wednesday, March 12th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. When Eldar Djangirov was signed to Sony Classical at the age of 17, the young pianist from Kansas City was already well known for his prodigious pyrotechnics and precocious knowledge of the bebop tradition. Along the way, he's had the good fortune to meet and work with the masters including Dr. Billy Taylor, Marian McPartland, Dave Brubeck, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton, Harvey Mason, Ron Carter, Pat Martino and many others. Through these opportunities and other wonderful musical experiences, Eldar continues to explore new frontiers through composing and performing, enabling him to ultimately to realize his own musical vision. MARYLAND: PARTHENON HUXLEY PRESENTS ACOUSTIC ELO
ELO Part II guitarist and singer Parthenon Huxley presents an evening of "Acoustic ELO" at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Wednesday, March 12th at 7:30 pm. In his 16th year of touring the world with former members of 70s supergroup Electric Light Orchestra, Maryland's Parthenon Huxley brings home hits such as "Evil Woman", "Livin' Thing" and "Telephone Line." Joined by The Peabody Conservatory's Ben Hoyt on violin and Maryland legend Dave Phenicie on bass, Huxley brings one of rock history's biggest sounds down to its melodic essentials in an intimate semi-acoustic setting. Huxley, a recording artist with Columbia and Universal, will perform songs from his 25 year solo career in the opening set. There is a $12 cover.
