BOSTON: JAN PETERS HOSTS OPEN MIC AT CLUB CAFE
Boston favorite Jan Peters hosts open mic on Friday, August 15th from 8:00 to 11:00 pm at THE NAPOLIAN ROOM AT CLUB CAFE (209 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA - 617-536-0966) with rian Patton on piano. Jan's work draws from an extensive repertoire of popular Broadway and standard songs as well as material from promising new songwriters. In addition to her cabaret work, Jan performs throughout the country accompanied by ensembles ranging from intimate jazz groups to large swing orchestras and appears at many of Boston's best nightclubs and hotels. BOSTON: DELFEAYO MARSALIS QUARTET AND "THE LAST SOUTHERN GENTLEMEN"
The Delfeayo Marsalis Quartet presents music form their CD "The Last Southern Gentlemen" at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Friday, August 15th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. "The Last Southern Gentlemen" is a landmark recording for Delfeayo Marsalis - for the first time, a pairing of father Ellis Marsalis, Jr. with Delfeayo on a collaborative album. This concert will feature songs from the album including both standards and original compositions. Built on the intimacy of American ballads and the trombone's expressive mimicry of the human voice, The Last Southern Gentlemen is a firm acknowledgement of the existence and importance of these sweet, gentle sounds. Joining Delfeayo and Ellis Marsalis will be bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Winard Harper. Call for cover/minimum information.
TORONTO: PHIL DWYER TRIO AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
The multi-generational Phil Dwyer Trio, with Morgan Childs (drums) and Ben Dwyer (bass) will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, August 14th through 16th at 8:00 pm. Phil Dwyer was a mainstay of the Toronto music scene from 1988-2004 and a resident of Vancouver Island since. His work, both live and in the studios, has placed him in the top echelon of saxophonists, pianists, composers and arrangers. In Dec. 2013 he was recognized for his career with one of Canada's top honours, an appointment to the Order Of Canada. As a jazz musician Phil is well-known for his ability to swing, his stylistic flexibility and, perhaps above all, the joyous energy he projects in his performances. In Sept. 2014 Phil will be starting law school at the University of New Brunswick and on his way there he is stopping off at the Jazz Bistro for this special three-night engagement. Joining him will be drummer Morgan Childs and bassist Ben Dwyer. Since moving to Toronto from the west coast Morgan has become of the of the most in-demand drummers in the city, and also busy as a touring musician. Bassist Ben Dwyer (Phil's son), is a resident of Montreal where he regularly performs with that city's top jazz musicians and is also a member of the popular Barr Brothers group.
