D.C.: LEGENDARY BASSIST STANLEY CLARK AT BLUES ALLEY
Legendary Bassist Stanley Clark performs at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, October 17th through 20th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Exploding into the jazz world in 1971, Stanley was a lanky teenager from the Philadelphia Academy of Music. He arrived in New York City and immediately landed jobs with famous bandleaders such as: Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Saunders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz, and a budding young pianist composer named Chick Corea. All of these musicians recognized immediately the ferocious dexterity and complete musicality the young Clarke possessed on the acoustic bass. Not only was he expert at crafting bass lines and functioning as a timekeeper in the bass' traditional role, Stanley also possessed a sense of lyricism and melody gained from his bass heroes Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro, and others, including non-bass players like John Coltrane. Call for cover/minimum information.
MARYLAND: INGRATITUDE - A TRIBUTE TO EARTH, WIND & FIRE
"inGratitude: A Tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire" will be presented atBETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500 ) on Friday, October 18th at 7:30 pm. The show pays homage to one of the most prolific musical ensembles in history. Offering an impressive body of familiar EWF tunes, specifically those from the classic years between 1973 - 1985, today's 10 piece band, led by four exceptional career musicians, evokes a nostalgic listen to a legend that today has moved on to new music and an expansion of a career that still has many more years to come. In the spring of 2009, inGratitude began to convene the best musicians in the Baltimore/Washington/Virginia area under the leadership of founder and lead singer Gene McBride. Inspired by The Elements since childhood, and with a strong falsetto of his own reminiscent of the master Phillip Bailey, McBride is excited at the prospect of audiences everywhere sharing the EWF experience. With broader plans that involved additional musicians, creative choreography, exciting production elements, and the addition of the original and new members of Pockets (protege of EWF), inGratitude has set its sights on crowd pleasing performances. There is a $25 cover.
