CABARET TONIGHT IN NYC: DARYL SHERMAN WITH GUEST HOUSTON PERSON AT MAMA'S
Singer/pianist Daryl Sherman, and her special guest Houston Person, will perform together at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Wednesday, September 18th at 7:00 pm. For 14 years Ms. Sherman played and sang for savvy New Yorkers and international visitors at the Waldorf Astoria's famed Cole Porter Steinway. Recently she headlined the annual Cole Porter Festival in his hometown of Peru, IN. Sherman has performed at The Algonquin's Oak Room, Feinstein's, Rose Hall with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy's Coca Cola and 59E59 Theaters where she was lauded for her band singer role in a centennial tribute to Artie Shaw. After learning piano as a youth, Houston Person switched to tenor sax. While stationed in Germany with the Army, he played in groups that also included Eddie Harris, Lanny Morgan, Leo Wright, and Cedar Walton. Person picked up valuable experience as a member of Johnny Hammond's group (1963-1966) and became a bandleader in the following years, often working with the late singer Etta Jones. A duo recording with Ran Blake was a nice change of pace, but most of Houston Person's playing has been done in blues-oriented organ groups. In the 1990s, Houston Person kept the soulful thick-toned tenor tradition of Gene Ammons alive, particularly in his work with organists. There is a $15 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
