NYC: T.K. BLUE "A WARM EMBRACE" CD RELEASE CELEBRATION

T.K. Blue will celebrate the release of his new CD "A Warm Embrace" at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Thursday, May 1st at 6:00 pm. Released by Blujazz Records, the CD features T.K. Blue (sax/flute), James Weidman (piano), Essiet Essiet (bass), Sylvia Cuenca (drums), Ron Jackson (guitar) and Roland Guerrero (percussion). There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: STEVE KUHN TRIO WITH STEVE SWALLOW & JOEY BARON AT BIRDLAND

The Steve Kuhn Trio with Steve Swallow & Joey Baron, will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, April 29th through May 3rd with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. After making his mark as a sideman with John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Art Farmer and others, pianist Steve Kuhn moved beyond the powerful influence of Bill Evans to become a unique stylist with incredible technique, sense of dynamics and lyricism. Over the last fifteen years Steve has released critically acclaimed CDs marking a well-deserved career renaissance. Bass guitar master and composer Steve Swallow joined the Paul Bley Trio in 1960, subsequently playing in groups led by Jimmy Giuffre, George Russell, Art Farmer, Stan Getz and Gary Burton. Rounding out the trio, drummer Joey Baron combines technical acuity with a deep sense of groove. The trio's recent ECM CD, "Wisteria," takes a fresh look at several pieces heard on Kuhn's orchestral, "Promises Kept," alongside the driving hard bop of "A Likely Story," Swallow's "Dark Glasses," Carla Bley's gospel-tinged "Permanent Wave" and the Brazilian flavored "Romance," by Dori Caymmi. There is a $40 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

NYC: DOUBLE FEATURE: OMAR SOSA QUARTETO AFRO-CUBANO AND THE MELISSA ALDANA QUARTET

On Thursday through Sunday, May 1st through 4th, THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) will present a double-feature how featuring The Omar Sosa Quarteto AfroCubano and The Melissa Aldana Quartet , with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The Omar Sosa Quarteto AfroCubano features Omar Sosa (Cuba), piano; Ernesto Simpson (Cuba). drums; Childo Tomas (Mozambique), elec. bass; and Leandro Saint-Hill (Cuba), alto sax & flute. Annually performing upwards of 100 concerts on six continents, Sosa has appeared in venues as diverse as the Blue Note, Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and numerous notable jazz festivals across the globe. He's garnered several Grammy nominations and has released a string of well-regarded solo albums in the last decade. The Melissa Aldana Quartet features Melissa Aldana, sax; Glenn Zaleski, piano; Pablo Menares, bass; Jochen Rueckert, drums. Melissa Aldana recently won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz saxophone competition where this year's panel of judges included saxophonists Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Branford Marsalis and Jane Ira Bloom. She was the first female instrumentalist to take first prize in this event since its inception in 1987. There is a $20-$35 cover.
