BOSTON: THE INTERNATIONAL STRING TRIO AT SCULLERS

The Cosmopolitan Gypsy Jazz group The International String Trio, featuring Ben Powell on violin, Slava Tolstoy on guitar and Ippei Ichimaru on bass. will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Tuesday, April 29th at 8:00 pm. True to its name, the International String Trio (IST) has honed an expansive repertoire embracing nearly a dozen styles from far-flung lands. Employing their instruments as passports, the adventurous trio unlocks the doors to a global array of tunes. Dinner/Show: $62 Show only: $22.

BOSTON: FABIAN ALMAZAN RHIZOME CD RELEASE SHOW

Pianist and composer Fabian Almazan celebrates the release of his latest CD Rhizome at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Tuesday, April 29th at 7:30 pm. Almazan, a native of Cuba now residing in New York City, found his musical roots as a child in his homeland of Havana where he first became involved in the classical piano tradition. When his parents could not afford to pay for private piano lessons, having fled Cuba in political exile to Miami, FL, pianist Conchita Betancourt was gracious enough to impart free lessons for over three years. Thanks to Mrs. Betancourt's exceeding generosity, Fabian was able to audition for the New World School of the Arts High School in Miami, FL where he studied from 1998 to 2002. Fabian Almazan received the Cintas Foundation 2010/11 Brandon Fradd Award in Music Composition. The award has been granted to many Cuban artists who have gone on to play an influential role in the development of Cuban cultural heritage. Almazan was also selected as one of six composers to participate in the Sundance Composers' Lab 2011 where he studied with such acclaimed film composers as Harry Gregson-Williams, Alan Silvestri, George S. Clinton, Christopher Young, Ed Shearmur and Peter Golub. There is a $25 cover.

WASHINGTON, DC: COLUMBIA JAZZ BAND AT BLUES ALLEY EARLY SHOW

The Columbia Jazz Band will perform at BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday, April 29th at 7:00 pm. Columbia Bands is a non-profit community organization that gives non-professional musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform challenging band literature while educating and entertaining the public in Howard County and other Maryland communities. The ensemble performs contemporary and traditional swing, Latin, and other jazz styles at public and private performances throughout the year. The Columbia Jazz Band is directed by Peter Barenbregge. WASHINGTON, DC: MOONLIGHT JAZZ ORCHESTRA AT BLUES ALLEY LATE SHOW

The Moonlight Jazz Orchestra will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday, April 29th at 9:00 pm. The orchestra is a jazz big band providing jazz big band music for events in or near Prince William County, VA. Although MJO specializes in the swing classics, they have a vast array of styles including rock, Latin, and ballroom dance music. The Moonlight Jazz Orchestra has performed concerts at fundraising events, concert halls, retirement communities, and public outdoor venues. The MJO often performs as a separate ensemble as well as sharing the stage at Prince William Community Band concerts. Call for cover/minimum information.

The Tommy Igoe Big Band celebrates Ray Charles Night on Tuesday, April 29th at 8:00 pm at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600). The show features singer Glenn Walters. Drumming icon, Tommy Igoe and his band are putting a fresh, global spin on a proud American art form.
