NYC: JUDY AND LIZA TOGETHER AGAIN AT MAMA'S
Cabaret favorites Tommy Femia and Rick Skye have teamed up for another evening of "Judy and Liza Together Again" at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Saturday, March 21st at 8:00 pm. They are joined by Ricky Ritzel (as Mort) at the piano. These MAC Award winning performers (Best Impersonation) will pull out all the stops, singing classic solo's, parodies, duets and just plain whooping and hollering by the greatest mother/ daughter team in show biz history. Tommy Femia is a 7 time winner of the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) Award for his brilliant portrayal of Judy Garland in "Judy Garland LIVE!", now in it's 20th season at Don't Tell Mama. He has also starred in "Whoop-de-doo", "I Will Come Back" and, most recently, "Norma Does Men". Rick Skye is best known for writing a string of outrageous comic revues including "The Flip Side of Neil Sedaka", "MaCabaret - a tabloid fable", "The War of the Mama Roses", "It's Madame with an E" and the International hit - "A Slice O' Minnelli" for which has enjoyed successful season's in Covent Garden, at the Apollo Theatre in London's West End and at the Dublin Theatre Festival where he received the Award for "Best Achievement in Performance". NYC: "LOOK UP! THE SONGS OF TURNER AND GRUSECKI" AT THE BEECHMAN
"Look Up! the songs of Turner and Grusecki" returns to THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE(407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) for four performances beginning Saturday, April 4th at 7:00 pm. Additional performances are scheduled for Sunday, April 19th at 8:00 pm; and Tuesdays, May 5 & 19th at 7:00 pm. The show is a musical revue about connecting and disconnecting, written by Off-Broadway singer-songwriters Anya Turner and Robert Grusecki. The duo will be joined by singers Darcy Yellin and Tom Picasso in an evening of contemporary songs directed by Stephen Nachamie. Song titles include "Cell Phone" "Fifty Is The New Twenty-Five" and "If You See Something, Say Something". There is a $20 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.
NYC: LE SCANDAL CABARET CONTINUES AT THE BEECHMAN
NYC's longest running burlesque variety show, LE SCANDAL CABARET, continues on Saturdays, at 10:30 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909). NYC: NYCC CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY
Celebrating their first anniversary, the members of New York Cabaret Club (NYCC) put together some of their all time favorite songs for a soulful, funky cabaret revue at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Saturday, April 4th at 4:00 pm. Accompanied by a 5-piece band, the show promises to make you dance in your seat and be dazzled by the singers and musicians in these energetic and rockin' performances. NYC: STACY SULLIVAN - SINCE YOU'VE ASKED
Stacy Sullivan, one of the top working singers in Cabaret, will challenge preconceptions with her new show, "Since You've Asked" at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Saturday, April 4th at 7:00 pm. Whether you're a fan of The Great American Songbook or VH1, you'll find something to love within this eclectic evening of music and story. With musical director Troy Fannin, Sullivan has created her most personal, thought-provoking evening to date with songs from Randy Newman, Nina Simone, Ray LaMontagne, Hoagy Carmichael, Judy Collins, Ed Sheeran, Woodie Guthrie, Stevie Nicks, Cole Porter, George Harrison, Noel Coward, David Hajdu, Fred Hersch, Jonsi, Stephen Schwartz and more. NYC: PEGGY KING & THE ALL-STAR JAZZ TRIO
Vocalist Peggy King, one of the best-loved stars of TV's Golden Age, as well as stage, screen and nightclubs, continues her amazing resurgence after nearly a 30-year absence, with a series of performances at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) starting with a show on Saturday, April 4th at 9:30 pm. She will be accompanied by musical director Andy Kahn on piano. She was re-discovered last year in the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning HBO film "Behind the Candelabra," in which Michael Douglas and Matt Damon watch a lengthy 1955 video clip of Peggy singing "When Liberace Winks at Me," accompanied by the real Liberace on piano. It also became a popular YouTube video and is included on the Elektra soundtrack album. "Pretty, perky Peggy King" has worked in films and television with nearly every star imaginable, from Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme (with whom she co-starred on a 50s TV series) to Sammy Davis, Jr. and Andre Previn, and her dozens of recordings through the years show just why she remains a favorite of America's finest composers and lyricists. Her major credits include film roles in the Vincente Minnelli classic "The Bad and the Beautiful" with Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner, "Zero Hour" with Dana Andrews and Linda Darnell, three years as a television regular on "The George Gobel Show," and guest-starring stints with Steve Allen, Pat Boone, James Garner, Bob Hope, Nat "King" Cole, Ed Sullivan, Garry Moore, Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas, among many others. And yes, that's Peggy King with Abbott and Costello in the cult favorite, "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy." She also co-starred with Tab Hunter in the original Hugh Martin musical "Hans Brinker" and with Joel Grey, Celeste Holm and Cyril Ritchard in a TV musical version of "Jack and the Beanstalk." King had a string of hits on Columbia Records, including "Make Yourself Comfortable," "You Better Go Now" and "Learning to Love" and her albums include "Wish Upon a Star," "Girl Meets Boy," "Lazy Afternoon," "Oh What a Memory We Made Tonight" and "Peggy King Sings Jerome Kern." NYC: ACTING UP SERIES: BAD WORDS FOR A GOOD CAUSE
The daring, dirty, vulgar and often hilarious songs that you'll never hear at a PG-13 cabaret all come to the forefront at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Saturday, April 4th at 9:30 pm. Not for the conservative or faint of heart, but if you're looking for the edgiest songs performed by New York's top talents, "Bad Words for a Good Cause" is the show for you! Not only will you hear some the best songs most shows are too frightened to perform but also half of all proceeds go to "Live Through Love," a Non-Profit Organization set up to bring awareness and educate on the battles against discrimination and reward open LGBT High School Seniors with scholarships. All your "naughty" can be evened out with a little "nice" at this special cabaret benefit, "Bad Words for a Good Cause". There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: PATTI LUPONE - "THE LADY WITH THE TORCH"
Broadway's Patti LuPone returns to 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) for an extended run that begins on Thursday, April 2nd and extends to Tuesday, April 14th. Patti LuPone's appearances at 54 Below have already achieved the status of legend. The two-time Tony Award winner returns to 54 Below with her critically-acclaimed show The Lady with A Torch. LuPone performs an eclectic collection of torch songs by such composers and lyricists as Arthur Schwartz, Howard Dietz, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, Billy Barnes, Harold Arlen, George and Ira Gershwin, and Cole Porter. The show is conceived and directed by Scott Wittman, musical direction by Joseph Thalken, orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick and dialogue by Jeffrey Richman. NYC: GIRLFRIEND FROM HELL: IN CONCERT AT 54 BELOW
Sean Matthew Whiteford (Rock of Ages, Rock N Roll Debauchery) presents a concert version of his 80s pop-rock horror romantic musical comedy, Girlfriend From Hell at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Saturday, April 4th at 11:30 pm as part of the club's Late Night Series. Inspired by the 1989 B-movie of the same title, Girlfriend From Hell tells the story of four-eyed wallflower, Maggie Miller, who longs for acceptance and romance. He convinces her to sell her soul, and he transforms her into a big-haired, high-heeled, foul mouthed, rock singing sex bomb who's hungry for revenge. NYC: THE CUTTING ROOM PRESENTS MARTY BALIN
Michelangelo claimed that he did not create a sculpture. Rather, the form was contained within the block of marble; he merely removed the excess, revealing the work of art. Marty Balin (Founding member of Jefferson Airplane) feels the same way. "The projects do themselves; the music comes through me." he says. Marty will be performing on at the CUTTING ROOM (44 East 32nd Street, NYC - 212-691-1900) on Saturday, April 4th at 7:30 pm. The same vision Marty had when he launched the Jefferson Airplane is present today. In fact, nearly everything he has worked on over the years has been fueled with his vision of art and music as vehicles for expressing a positive message. Born Martyn Jerel Buchwald in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 30, 1942, Marty was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area by parents Joe and Jean Buchwald. Joe became an important part in the 60s San Francisco music scene. As a lithographer, he was responsible for printing more than 200 different posters for shows at famous clubs like the Matrix, the Fillmore and Avalon Ballrooms. Jean started and kept the Jefferson Airplane scrap books featuring many of the photos and newspaper clippings that are exclusive to this site. Growing up, Marty was always involved in art, music and dance. He attended San Francisco State University; initially pursuing a career as a painter. After appearing in a production of West Side Story, Balin turned to music with the encouragement of his good friend Ralph's brother, Johnny Mathis. In 1962 Marty renamed himself Marty Balin and began recording with Challenge Records, releasing the singles "Nobody But You" and "I Specialize in Love". Balin was the lead for the folk music quartet called The Town Criers, followed by a brief stint with the Gateway Singers in 1965. Ultimately Marty wanted to electrify the folk sound. Club owners refused to book such a "country" act, so he decided to open his oen club. Balin opened the Matrix night club on August 13th 1965 featuring his new band Jefferson Airplane. The Grateful Dead, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Big Brother and The holding Company and Steve Miller are but a few other iconic Rock bands who performed at the Matrix. The Jefferson Airplane, initially a folk-rock venture, came to epitomize the psychedelic scene, scoring a gold record with their 1967 second album, Surrealistic Pillow. Balin's soulful tenor proved a pivotal element of their sound. He also wrote key compositions including "It's No Secret" "Today," "Comin' Back To Me" "Plastic Fantastic Lover" "Share a Little Joke," and "Volunteers." 2010 came with a rockin' start with the recording of the 2011 release album, The Witcher. Marty continues to tour around the world performing his classic hits as well as his new songs, soon to be released on his latest album. Marty lives for the powerful exchange of energy between himself and his audience. There is a $35 cover plus a $20 food/drink minimum.
NYC: CUSH JUMBO - JOSEPHINE AND I AT JOE'S PUB
Following a critically acclaimed run at London's Bush Theatre, Olivier nominated actress and writer Cush Jumbo (The River, Julius Caesar, "Getting On") brings her one-woman show 'Josephine And I' to JOE'S PUB at THE PUBLIC THEATRE (425 Lafayette Street, NYC - 212-967-7555), running through April 5th at 7:00 pm, with an additional matinee show on Saturday, April 5th at 3:00 pm. Born into poverty in the slums of St. Louis, Josephine Baker became one of the most famous and groundbreaking stars of the 20th century. The first African-American performer to rise to international prominence, she was a French Resistance spy and civil rights activist who was married twice by age 16 and served as muse to Pablo Picasso, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, who called her "the most sensational woman anyone ever saw." Now, nearly forty years after her death, Baker's life inspires a young woman to face up to the sacrifices required to follow one's dreams. Featuring swinging jazz and ragtime rhythms, this theatrical event directed by Tony nominee Phyllida Lloyd (Julius Caesar, Mary Stuart, The Iron Lady, Mamma Mia!) interweaves a modern day story of an ambitious young woman with the fascinating life of the peerless, fearless Josephine Baker.
