NYC: THE JULIANA PROJECT
Each month the cast of the JULIANA PROJECT performs a number of chapters from the novel, JULIANA, at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE(61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) in a way that is similar to a mini-series. The next episode is on Tuesday, March 31st at7:00 pm. In each "episode" the story is brought to life as the actors recreate scenes from 1940s New York. Often these scenes occur in places familiar to modern day audiences, such as Times Square, MacDougal Street and Cafe Reggio. The "episodes" contain live musical performances, comedy, sex and drama, performed in clothing suggestive of the time period. The audience becomes engulfed in this bygone era and soon finds itself in the midst of a gripping story of gay men and women living through a tumultuous time of fear, triumph, secrecy, love and excitement. Don't worry if you haven't seen it from the beginning. You can enter the story at any point. We'll catch you up. If you have the inclination, come dressed for the time period, not mandatory, but fun. Vanda, the series' writer, has earned numerous awards as a playwright. In addition to being an Edward Albee Fellow, Vanda was a finalist for a Lambda Literary Award, and recently won Best New Play in Celebration Theater's New Play Contest (originators of Naked Boys Singing). Her play, PATIENT HM, won first place in Pride Stage and Screen's Women's Contest and another play, THE FORGETTING CURVE, which is under option to Theatrum Mundi, was produced at Boston Arts Center this past September. Her work has been produced in New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and Scotland. Her prose has been published in Prairie Schooner, The Outrider Review and Pentimento. There is no cover charge, just a 2-drink minimum.
