WASHINGTON, DC: ROY AYERS AT BLUES ALLEY
Constantly performing and recording since the 1960s, Roy Ayers is the most well known jazz vibraphonists. He will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, February 5th through 8th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Ayers has produced some of the most loved modern soul-jazz records of all time. Classics beyond genre such as, "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", most influential afro-jazz with musician Fela Kuti, "Africa - Centre Of The World", and the most seminal jazz-funk, such as "Running Away". Roy Ayers could very well be the best jazz/R&B artist you don't know. In his 40-plus years as a vibraphonist, he has produced a string of soul and funk classics, like "We Live In Brooklyn Baby" and "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," that has arguably made him the second-most sampled musician in hip-hop, after James Brown. WASHINGTON, DC: CRAIG ALSTON QUARTET AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS
Craig Alston, a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore who is best known as the saxophonist for Fertile Ground, performs at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) on Friday, February 6th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Craig began performing with Fertile Ground while attending Morgan State University. As the band became more successful, Craig chose to leave college and pursue his passion. Fertile Ground's sound was influenced by Sade, Fela Kuti, Miles Davis quintet and Art Blakey and the jazz messengers. As a member of Fertile Ground, Craig has traveled to the United Kingdom (UK), Japan, Belgium, France, Croatia, Austria, and elsewhere sharing it's unique blend of jazz, soul and world music. The broad exposure has allowed him to learn and grow from the various musicians and styles encountered. In addition to being the saxophonist for Fertile Ground, he also performs under his own name. As an independent artist, Craig plays the saxophone, bass, or keyboard. As a saxophonist, Craig has played with jazz legends such as Larry Willis, David Murray, Oliver Lake, John Hicks and Jimmy Heath. He has recorded with artist from various musical genres such as the Basement Boys, vocalists Angela Johnson, Julie Dexter and Deborah Bonds and many others. He has played at Artscape, the African-American Heritage Festival, the Baltimore Museum of Art and many other places locally and nationally. He recently won the Chick-Webb Jazz Combo competition. There is a $23 cover.
BETHESDA, MD: 14TH ANNUAL BUDDY HOLLY TRIBUTE
BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) presents their 14th Annual Buddy Holly Tribute on Friday, February 6th at 8:00 pm. An all-star tribute on the 56th Anniversary of the fateful Winter Dance Party plane crash, featuring the music of rock n' roll legend Buddy Holly and fellow tour stars Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Performers include;David Kitchen, the Flea Bops, the Rock-A-Sonics, Honky Tonk Confidential, Ruthie and the Wranglers, Jelly Roll Mortals, Cal Everett, Ron Scott, Dagmar and Bob, Jason Hicks and emceed by British radio host and music writer Colin Davies. PALM BEACH, FL: THE LETTERMEN AT THE ROYAL ROOM
The Lettermen will debut at THE ROYAL ROOM at THE COLONY HOTEL(155 Hammond Avenue, Palm Beach, FL - 561-659-8100) on Tuesday through Saturday, February 3rd through 7th at 8:00 pm. One of the world's best-loved male vocal trios, The Lettermen have had 16 Top 10 singles including "Going Out of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off You," "The Way You Look Tonight," When I Fall in Love," "Turn Around, Look at Me," "Traces/Memory," "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" and "Chanson D'Amour". Consisting of Tony Butala (the group's founding original member), Donovan Tea, who joined the group in 1984, and Bobby Poynton, who first joined The Lettermen in 1989 and recently returned to the trio, The Lettermen's recording career continues going strong with the albums "Best of Broadway" and "Live in the Philippines." The trio was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2012. For each guest there will be a $75 cover charge Tuesday through Thursday, and a $100 cover charge on Friday Saturday, plus a $20 minimum for food and beverage; $95 cover charge for premium seating on Tuesday through Thursday and $120 on Friday and Saturday.
