FRAMINGHAM, MA: AMAZING THINGS OPEN MIC FEATURING STEPHEN SMITH

Every second Wednesday of the month Leslie Holmes hosts an amazing Open Mic night at the AMAZING THINGS ARTS CENTER (160 Hollis Street, Framingham, MA - 508-405-2787), and each show features a special guest. On Wednesday, January 14th the featured guest will be Stephen Smith. Pianist for both Frank and the open mic is Tom LaMark. Stephen also has a sense of timing that few others have. He has planned a really interesting program and I know you will be really glad you came. Vocalist Stephen Smith is a singer with a natural style and compelling baritone voice, free of affectation and with distinctive and subtle phrasing. A Massachusetts native, Stephen's favorite songs are those from the Great American Songbook, a group of songs that have defined the depth and intimacies of American Culture for generations. With a lifelong interest in evocative vocalists and accomplished composers, Stephen developed his craft through his association with many singers and musicians at countless jam sessions, vocal showcases, and performances. In addition, Stephen has also studied privately and for several years operated an Inn and Cabaret/Jazz room on the Delaware River in Pennsylvania, where he performed regularly and honed his consummate skills. Stephen has received high praises for his ability to engage an audience with his heartfelt performances, comprehensive knowledge of music and a warm and spontaneous manner. He has appeared in many New England venues including: Scullers, The Center for the Arts in Natick, and the Acton Jazz Cafe. Stephen attended the Cabaret Symposium at the Eugene O'Neil Center in New London Connecticut. The open-mic starts at 7:00 pm (signup at 6:30 pm), and the featured performers go on at 8:10 pm. There is an $10 cover charge ($9 cover for BACA members).

TORONTO: EMILY STEINWALL QUINTET - HI RES GIG

Saxophonist Emily Steinwall performs at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Wednesday, January 14th at 8:00 pm. She is joined by Youngchan Na - Guitar; James Hill • Piano; Hayden Farrar - Bass; and Louis Baryani-Irvine - Drums. Emily was born in Toronto in 1995, and is currently in her second year at Humber College working towards a Bachelors degree in Music Performance. She is a graduate of Malvern Collegiate Institute, where she first tried the saxophone. During her last two years of high school, Emily participated in the Humber College Community School and Honour Combo Programs. She was also a member of the the JazzFM Youth Big Band and Musicfest Canada's National Honour Combo. Through these programs, Emily has had the privilege and opportunity of sharing the stage with many world-class musicians, including Rich Perry, Ben Monder, Lew Tabackin, Al Kay, Tom Scott, and has studied with many of Canada's greatest jazz musicians, including: Kirk Macdonald, Alex Dean, Seamus Blake, Mike Murley, Lorne Lofsky, Dave Neill, and Andy Ballantyne. Emily hopes to one day forge her career within the excellent Canadian jazz community. Call for cover/minimum information.
