WASHINGTON, DC: CHRIS THOMAS KING AT BLUES ALLEY
Chris Thomas King, a determined progressive, will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, January 8th through 11th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. King is hoping to reinvigorate the blues as a living African American art with a more contemporary approach and adamantly refusing to treat it as a museum piece whose "authentic" forms needed careful preservation. King eventually modified that approach to a certain degree, attempting to create a more explicit link between blues tradition and the general musical present. Chris Thomas King is a New Orleans Grammy Award-winning musician and actor who is initially known for his audacious fusion of blues and hip-hop. King reached a whole new audience with his film debut in the Coen Brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, not only appearing on the award-winning soundtrack, but establishing himself as a serious dramatic actor as well. There is a $24 cover.
WASHINGTON, DC: MATT MITCHELL AND CHES SMITH DUO AT BOHEMIAN CAVERNS
The Matt Mitchell and Ches Smith Duo perform at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS(2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) on Sunday, January 11th with performances at 7:00 & 8:30 pm. Transparent and many others were first made aware of their original musical approaches and talents as members of saxophonist Tim Berne's Snake Oil Ensemble, which also featured clarinetist Oscar Noriega, when the club presented Snake Oil's debut performance in 2012 at Bohemian. Happy that Snake Oil will be returning later this season, the Cavernes is fortunate now to present the pianist and drummer of Snake Oil in the more intimate arrangement of the due setting. It follows Matt and Ches's debut duo recording, "Fiction" released on Pi records. Mitchell is of one of the most in-demand young musicians. Mitchell is also a member of ensembles led by trumpeter Dave Douglas, drummer John Hollenbeck, and reedist Rudresh Mahanthappa. Raised in Philadelphia, Mitchell earned his masters from the Eastman School of Music. Smith is a graduate of the prestigious Mills College, and possesses percussion work that is loose in feel while precise in execution, bringing both the punk and indie rock aesthetic to the music. His collaborations have included John Zorn, Wadada Leo Smith, and many others. There is a $15 cover.
