NYC: JANE MONHEIT'S JAZZ PARTY AT BIRDLAND

Jane Monheit's Jazz Party, with Michael Kanan, Neal Miner, Rick Montalbano will be held at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays, at 6:00 pm. In just over fifteen years, critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Jane Monheit's honey-smooth vocals, silky phrasing and natural knack for storytelling have earned her two Grammy nominations and established her as one of her generation's most beloved and accomplished vocalists. Jane's sincere and romantic interpretations of exceptional songs has made her a favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds. Jane will debut her forthcoming project, "Hello Bluebird: Celebrating the Jazz of Judy Garland," in NYC during a weeklong engagement in January 2015. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: BILLY COBHAM SPECTRUM 40 AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Billy Cobham Spectrum 40, with Billy Cobham - Drums, Dean Brown - Guitar, Gary Husband - Keyboards, and Ric Fierabracci - Bass will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, September 2nd through 7th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Ever since his breakthrough in the early 1970s as a founding member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and as a drummer/leader whose recordings (such as Spectrum) and powerful, complex style of play exerted a strong influence on the course of jazz and jazz-fusion-Billy Cobham has remained a tireless musical explorer. In 2014, Cobham will release a live CD recording from last years' celebrated Spectrum 40 tours, which dazzled audiences around the world in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Spectrum CD, the defining album of the jazz-fusion genre. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: CELEBRATING JOE TEMPERLEY WITH BRUCE HARRIS AND FRIENDS

Avery special weekend will be held at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, September 5th through 7th, with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra's elder statesman, Joe Temperley, right before his 85th birthday. The show is part of the Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival. One of the best saxophonists in the world, Temperley has seen it all during a career with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Joe Henderson, and many more. This weekend, he celebrates with a top-notch band of young talent, including the Jonathan Batiste Trio, vocalist Brianna Thomas, and Bruce Harris, all of whom are favorites at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Don't miss this rare opportunity to catch a living legend in action, all in the intimate setting of Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. Call for cover/minimum information.
