NYC: SCOTT FEINER & PANDEIRO JAZZ AT BIRDLAND

Scott Feiner & Pandeiro Jazz featuring Mike Moreno - guitar, Sam Yahel - piano with Scott Feiner - pandeiro & compositions will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Thursday, August 28th at 6:00 pm. With his "Pandeiro Jazz" project Scott Feiner has expanded the possibilities and perception of the Brazilian pandeiro worldwide - an instrument not normally spoken of in the same context with American music. Feiner has walked a fascinating road from the jazz world of Manhattan to the nightlife of Rio de Janeiro. Born in New York City, and formally a guitarist, Feiner received a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies/Guitar at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, where he studied with the legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean. During the early '90s he was a respected guitarist on the New York jazz scene, playing with some of the city's finest musicians. In 1999, during his first trip to Brazil, Feiner discovered the pandeiro, the percussion instrument that would become his passion and new means of musical expression. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 2001 and after only a few years became a respected pandeirista, playing in the traditional settings of Rio. In March 2014 Feiner released his fourth album, "A View From Below", which also highlights his talents as a composer. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: BIRDLAND PRESENTS THE CHARLIE PARKER BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Born August 29th, 1920, Charlie "Bird" Parker was one of the most influential and iconic artists in jazz history. As the central figure in the development of bebop in the 1940s Bird was a legendary figure in his own lifetime and was idolized by those who worked with him including Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Bud Powell and Miles Davis. He was the inspiration for Birdland and practically defined its mission as the home for modern jazz in New York City. Since his death in 1955 at age 34 Bird has inspired every subsequent generation of jazz artist and left a rich legacy of distinctive compositions and signature melodic vocabulary that still informs every style of jazz. For his celebration Birdland presents a group of jazz all-stars who can move seamlessly between classic and contemporary Bird-inspired material. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
