NYC: BARRET IS BACK ON RESTAURANT ROW
Chris Barrett returns to LA RIVISTA RISTORANTE (313 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-366-4603) on Monday, May 19th, where he will be at the piano Mondays through Wednesdays. There are two shows nightly, a dinner show at 8:00 and a supper show at 10:00 pm. Chris Barrett's performances are in the tradition of the great late-night boites of a fondly remembered era, when the likes of Hugh Shannon, Bobby Short, and Buddy Barnes manned the keyboard. There is no cover charge.
NYC: TOSHI CAPPUCCINO WITH REPRISE OF HIS CHANSON SHOW
Jazz vocalist Toshi Cappuccino reprises his Chanson Show to THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Tuesday, July 8th at 7:00 pm. His first Duplex show in May was completely sold out, so he returns to reprise the event. Toshi Cappuccino's recent Japan "Chanson" tour was a major success as well with return dates planned for Fall 2014. For his show at the Duplex he will sing a selection of Japanese chansons and jazz favorites. Note: Most of the show is presented in Japanese. There is a $10 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: JON WEBER: JOPLIN TO JARRETT
Fresh from performing this show in London, Jon Weber brings 'Joplin to Jarrett' toTHE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Tuesday, July 8th at 7:00 pm. Joplin to Jarrett serves as a concise history of jazz piano with an emphasis on the earlier composers from the first half of the 20th Century. Over 100 years of music interspersed with musical excerpts with John Weber's insights and anecdotes reveal a lifetime's worth of impassioned research. Weber's extraordinary facility for recall and analysis allow him to form fascinating and unexpected connections between artists of different eras, their development and influences in jazz piano. Jazz pianist Jon Weber has recorded and toured all over the world, winning numerous honors for performance and composition - scoring extensively for television since 1987. Jon lives in New York City and hosts NPR's Piano Jazz with Jon Weber after frequently serving as guest host for Marian McPartland. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: JAZZ LEGEND ANNIE ROSS TUESDAYS THE METROPOLITAN ROOM
Jazz legend Annie Ross continues her unprecedented, record-breaking, multi-year run at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), every Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. Ms. Ross has been an abundant contributor to the art of jazz for over 50 years. Born in the UK, she has been a permanent resident of the USA for many years and a US citizen since 2001. Annie Ross is one of the pioneers of vocalese and the composer of "Twisted", one of the most well known examples of that art, as well as "Farmers Market", "Jackie" and many others. A founding member of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, considered the greatest jazz vocal ensemble of all time, her influence is present in all subsequent practitioners of vocalese. "Twisted" has been recorded by a host of vocalists, including some not normally associated with jazz, including Joni Mitchell and Bette Midler. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: JOAN RIVERS: LIVE IN TIMES SQUARE! 2 SHOWS TONIGHT!
Comedy legend Joan Rivers returns with her her live stand-up act to THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) on Tuesday, July 8th at 7:00 pm. Rivers presents an evening of her newest and most outrageous riffs on Hollywood, pop culture, celebrities, reality TV and award show fashions. Rivers delivers a raunchy, politically incorrect evening of stand-up comedy. A full dinner menu and bar are available, and pianist Will Hall plays from the time doors open until Joan takes the stage. Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper (The Life; Caroline, or Change; Finian's Rainbow) brings his exciting new show to 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Tuesdays, July 1st & 8th at 7:00 pm. Jazz Poetry brings together an impressive array of composers who have set to music the poems of the Diaspora. Jazz Poetry is the beat that runs through the Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights movement, rap, slam, the whole shabam! The poets Langston Hughes, Dr. Maya Angelou, Gil Scott-Heron, Sonia Sanchez, Amiri Baraka, and Oscar Brown Jr. have given us their words. Jazz Poetry will give you their music! There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.
NYC: BROADWAY BALLYHOO! MONTHLY AT 54 BELOW
Scott Siegel's critically acclaimed Broadway Ballyhoo!, that regularly features great Broadway and nightclub stars in New York City is now presented monthly at 54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551), with the next event on Tuesday, July 8th at 9:30 pm. This ever-changing musical variety show, soon to begin its third year of performances, will play 54 Below every 2nd Tuesday of the month. For this show, Scott Siegel, best known as the creator, writer and host of Town Hall's signature series, Broadway By the Year (in its 14th season), again presenting some powerhouse performers: Jill Paice, Mark Nadler, Carole Demas, Farah Alvin, Camille Saviola, Bob Stillman, Maxine Linehan And Marya Coburn. Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks are back - and now will play every Monday & Tuesday night from 8:00 to 11:00 pm at at IGUANA'S VIP LOUNGE (240 West 54th Street, NYC - 212-765-5454). Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks is an eleven-piece band playing music of the 1920s & 30s for your dining and dancing pleasure. In 1976 Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks (originally known as the New Orleans Nighthawks) was formed. A big-band historian and collector, Giordano has more than 60,000 scores in his collection. Grammy-winner Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks have played in New York nightclubs, appeared in films: The Cotton Club, The Aviator, Finding Forrester, Revolutionary Road, and HBOs Boardwalk Empire, and for concerts at the Town Hall, Jazz At Lincoln Center and the Newport Jazz Festival.
